Help a teacher beat his students

Deck Help forum

I have a deck I'm working on for a MTG club my students pressed me into sponsoring. So if I'm going to play, I want to win!

Help me out with it if you have a spare moment right here: Teacher's Deck

I took a look at your deck. It's actually incorrectly labeled as standard. MtG is played in different formats. Standard consist of cards from the latest few expansions. Casual, on the other hand, is essentially free form. Anything goes, for the most part. The first thing you've got to do is decide on the format. I suggest Standard as it's the format most of your students are likely to play.

There really isn't all that many cards you can salvage from your current deck. Building a passable deck can be as cheap as $20. I'm curious to see how you got to /. Deck building in MtG is essentially a form of self-expression and you can tell a lot about people by the colors they associate with.

My first advice is to take a few MtG color quizzes to think about what type of player you are. We'll go from there.

Thanks for taking the time to look at my deck; I really appreciate it. I got to B/U mostly because they were the most interesting colors I had, but I'll take a look at some color quizzes if I can find some online.

I'll re-label my deck.

Honestly, if you really want to beat your students, I'd just sell any cards you have that are worth a dollar or two, and then give yourself a budget, and find a good deck online (probably this website) and buy the singles you need online or at your LGS. (Also, it is a good idea to play standard, that way you can enter tournaments if you get into MTG a bit more without having to get an entirely new deck)

K00lDudE1's got it. Find a color combination that appeal to you. Then do some research. Look at standard decks other people have made on this site. You can use the search function at the top right-hand-side. See what they've built and make something similar. Then buy single cards from your local store or from online.

Decks that are exactly 60 cards are stronger than those that have more. Shrinking a deck's size increases consistency.

You could just go super-meta and play Venerated Teacher and Great Teacher's Decree, alonside a bunch of Level Up creatures from the original Zendikar block. (Student of Warfare would be meta, too.)

I know decks are optimal at 60 cards; I mention in the description for [teachers-deck] that I am trying to get to that number.

I really appreciate all of the suggestions, everyone, but until I can afford to buy more cards, I'm looking to work with the cards I currently have.

Also a good idea is to have play sets of each card so you hit what you need more often

could you leave a decklist with just the cards you have in it, so we can see what you have available, and help you to build a deck from what you already own?
