G/W Scales Counters/Megamorph - Which is better? Deathmist Raptor vs Undergrowth Champion

Deck Help forum

I'm having trouble making a decision about which 3 drop creature to into my GW Scales/megamorph deck.

Deathmist Raptors vs Undergrowth Champions. They both can trigger off of scales and both server the purpose of becoming pretty big and help control the board state. both are susceptible to removal but it seems as though Undergrowth's are more versatile at taking damage.

What are your thoughts ?

Please link cards when discussing them.

Deathmist Raptor vs. Undergrowth Champion.

When used in a Selesnya Hardened Scales Megamorph deck.

I don't run either in my list for the deck, I've comitted to being very agressive and neither of them are fast enough. my three drop of choice is Managorger Hydra. a lot of standard's removal comes from burn spells and the hydra outclasses those very, very quickly. granted I run a version lacking Den Protectors because i don't want to put money into standard.

in testing, Undergrowth Champion is almost strictly underwhelming. I didn't play with him for long but when I did he did a lot less for me than I wanted to. triggering off of lands ended up being way more awkward and way less growing than triggering off of spells as hydra does.

if those two were the only options I would probably go with Deathmist Raptor for its being a better creature and being more likely to be a good blocker sooner, but I don't like either option.

I just went to your decklist and honestly you aren't using scales enough to run it. you will not always be megamorphing Hidden Dragonslayer and you will rarely be megamorphing Deathmist Raptor at all. Archangel of Tithes has not super relevant synergy. Also Gideon, Ally of Zendikar has no synergy. You'd be much better off either going more into playing scales (/all/ dedicated scales decks should be running Avatar of the Resolute. he is entirely ridiculous even on curve with no value as a 3/2 trample reach for 2). I just don't see enough synergy with counters for the scales to always be relevant, and having scales while they're irrelevant is absolutely terrible. Also having Hangarback Walker in your maybeboard, he should be main decked. He doesn't need scales to be degenerate, but with scales he is one of the most ridiculous creatures in standard. trust me, there will be times where you tick him up above 10 and then valorous stance him yourself to just get the fliers you need to go for the kill.

for numbers specifically, you only run 19 cards that /can/ be good with scales, and a full 7 of them are megamorphs you will not always be megamorphing. you just won't have the time or mana available to be putting down then flipping a deathmist raptor. it will just be a 3/3 deathtouch for three. Which is amazing. But not really what you want to be doing to use hardened scales fully. I would totally consider cutting scales from your list and replacing it with Hangarback Walker. you need something that you want to spend 2 mana on (as dragonslayer and protector both really really want to be morphed for value). Hangarback fills your 2 spot on the curve and is an amazing card in standard. (If you want to play scales that's great, but I would back off of megamorph and maybe go down to a 2-of gideon, cut down on dragonslayers unless you're in a very slow meta, and add some more counter-focused cards like managorger, avatar, Endless One, Servant of the Scale, and Hangarback Walker. either way hangarback is amazing.

You are correct. I didn't see it in his initial list. He didn't post it to his profile. My mistake XP

Of the two? Deathmist Raptor The champion needs landfall triggers to function properly, which can be unreliable.

As for the best 3-drop critter for scales, I am with A13 for Managorger Hydra

My newest 3-drop for my sclaes build will be Nissa, Voice of Zendikar

Korombos, you think nissa will be worth running? I'm considering it but having difficulty finding room for something that's not really good onto an empty board. Though the synergy with a broken hangarback seems very, very strong. I'll see if I can find your list and maybe comment there
