Griselbrand aetherflux

Deck Help forum

Hi guys,

So I have 2 griselbrand sitting in my collection and I'm trying to build a deck around them. At first I started looking on the internet and stuff, I saw the breach/shoal reanimator deck, it looked really fun but i have 0 copies of breach and goryo so... next.

What i have though is some lotus blooms, mana vault, aetherflux reservoir etc...

So the idea was : play a bunch of mana artifacts, (i have chrome mox, mana vault, lotus petal...) get them back in your hand with baral's expertise, cast a suspend-free lotus bloom with it which is 3 instant mana, enough to replay your chrome mox, mana vault, tap it, cast baral's again, eventually you'll start gaining 8, 9, 10 life each time you cast a spell thanks to aetherflux reservoir, draw with griselbrand to get more artifacts to play, more baral expertise, and eventually you'll end up with 50 life and win the game.

So yeah the main combo here i guess is baral's + lotus bloom, which is a black lotus basically with this setup.

But i'm having troubles figuring out how to cheat griselbrand into play. I thought oath of druids maybe ? Then the core of the deck would be something like :

4 Lotus Bloom

4 Baral's Expertise

4 Aetherflux Reservoir

2 Griselbrand

4 Oath of Druids

1 Mana Vault

1 Sol Ring

2 Chrome Mox

1 Lotus Petal

1 Gaea's Blessing for obvious reasons

And then a bunch of good blue cards like brainstorm and counterspells.

But my main problems with this is, if the oath of druids gets a late griselbrand and i end up with half of my deck in the graveyard i might not be able to win the game, even with a gaea's blessing if it's even further in the deck.

So yeah, i need your help. Maybe go for polymorph instead ? I know it could be easier to just go for another combo but i'd love to make this work. It might not be possible though... i did not make the atherflux math :p

Use brackets around each card so that people can hover over and see them. I.e. Oath of Druids

Right now you're in legacy territory with the cards you've named. In modern, players often use Goryo's Vengeance or Through the Breach to sneak Griselbrand into play.

In Legacy, he is most often used in B/R Reanimator with the use of the Entomb + Animate Dead or Reanimate.

How competitive are you trying to make the deck? Are you wanting it for modern or legacy?

Hi,

Well i guess it will have to fit in legacy or vintage in order to use the cards i need, but casual will do just fine too. I don't want to break any format with it :p i'd just like to find a way to consistently cast Griselbrand around turn 3 without ditching half of my deck, to play Aetherflux Reservoir on turn 4 and start the combo off.

Like i mentioned, oath of druids looks like a great option, but if my gaea's blessing whiffs, then i'm kinda screwed. I guess griselbrand can win the game by himself from there though but... myeah. I'd rather play the combo i'm going for.

I can second that the Reanimate strategy is super fun and pretty cheap as far as legacy decks go, much cheaper if you don't run OG duals too!

But also, consider Children of Korlis as a way to draw a lot of spells without dying. And Tendrils of Agony is a much more efficient storm spell!

I think possibly Paradoxical Outcome could be better than Baral's Expertise in what you're trying to achieve?

Another option is to run something like Monastery Mentor that generates value off of each cast of your 0 cost artifacts.

I'm not sure if you want to try and combine the lifegain route with the Griselbrand; it seems overly complex, almost as if you're being pulled in two very different directions.

I could easily see the Griselbrand route, but it would probably focus on disruption rather than running the lifegain stuff.

Well I prefer Baral's Expertise in this deck, another combo with it i just thought of is with Manamorphose which is basically 2 free mana and card draw since you cast it for free with baral's.

And the thing is, in one turn i can combo so many spells that even if i draw 2 times with griselbrand, i can still manage to get to 50 life if one turn.

The other possibility is to just get rid of the aetherflux part, and go for a modern deck with tokens and Polymorph ? Like a cheap version of a Griselbrand glass canon, grixis i guess.

I don't have Goryo's Vengeance but i do have Footsteps of the Goryo, i guess i can combine it with Anger to achieve the same goal. With a lot of cantrips it should be easy to get them in the graveyard. I guess i would run Soul Spike and Fury of the Horde.

Then the idea would be to pitch an early Lingering Souls and Anger, cast lingering flashback cost, cast polymorph on a token, get griselbrand and win like that ? Another way is to pitch griselbrand and anger and reanimate through footstep of the goryo and win this way too.

Oh well no, anger and polymorph, it does not work. Since i don't get the griselbrand 100% of the time...
