I've been working on a deck and I have yet to see anyone do this, by searching online. I know it's not legal but it sure is a fun little hand to play and make their jaw drop.

Funkydiscogod What do you mean? It cost x1 swamp to cast, and the card adds x3 Swamp to your mana pool?

That mana only works for one turn.

You can't use the mana from dark ritual each turn after you cast it for the rest of the game, just the turn it's used.

Swamp adds black mana. Dark ritual adds three black mana.

Lands are not mana, but produce mana.

A Mana is not a land, it is a resource that can be created by mana abilities. This mana can used to pay for the cost to play spells or abilities. Mana is lost whenever the game moves to next step or phase.

This is a common mistake made from new players who come from other ccgs like pokemon.

From the MtG Comprehensive Rules:

  • 106.2. Mana is represented by mana symbols (see rule 107.4). Mana symbols also represent mana costs (see rule 202).
  • 106.3. Mana is produced by the effects of mana abilities (see rule 605). It may also be produced by the effects of spells, as well as by the effects of abilities that arent mana abilities.
  • 106.4. When an effect produces mana, that mana goes into a players mana pool. From there, it can be used to pay costs immediately, or it can stay in the players mana pool. Each players mana pool empties at the end of each step and phase.

There's also faster and more consistent combo decks than trying to use Door to Nothingness, namely 1-Land Belcher. If you're still interested in Door to Nothingness, people have been trying to make a Modern brew for a while that relies on using Tooth and Nail to power out 2 Composite Golems.

Ah, yes, the days when people think a Llanowar Elves and similar abilities allow you to put that color land onto the table, rather than just get that mana for a turn. I'm glad this misunderstanding is still out there, and not lost to 1994.
