Domri Rade vs Ulvenwald tracker

Deck Help forum

I am creating a Ramp Gruul Deck and was wondering which card would be more proficient at renewable removal using the fight feature, Domri Rade is more expensive but has additional features that would be valuable, but Ulvenwald Tracker would be cheap, but what is the more valuable card in your opinion?

Well they do very different things, it's pretty obvious. I would say Tracker is better at fighting stuff and it lands T1 as well. Because Domri will be especially powerful in a creature heavy deck by essence and because you're building a ramp deck, I'm afraid you might be disappointed with him. Unless you're ramping with creatures such as Sakura-Tribe Elder ;)

the biggest factors to consider here would be your mana curve and your creature count because of Domri's + ability. I actually don't like Domri very much because he can be very restrictive for deckbuilding. In a 60 card deck you need at least 26 to 28 creatures to even approach a 50% chance of hitting on his +. His + ability is just really bad, IMHO. Perhaps if you had some sort of scry or tutor card to put a creature on top, but that's a lot of work when you could just be doing better things.

tldr: just use whichever one fills out your mana curve better, that will help you win more than the differences between Domri and Tracker.

you could also consider a 2-2 or a 3-1 split.

The tracker is going to be able to use it's fight ability about twice as often as domri. However, domri is probably more resilient in general.

In a vacuum I would go for the Domri because a deck that wants these cards is already going to be chock full of green early drops like Experiment One and Tarmogoyf. If you're doing a more control style like a Jund deck the tracker can be an early role player and fill out your mana curve.

We're kind of getting down the rabbit hole here though because if you're in the market for a cheap walker you might as well just do Liliana of the Veil, Gideon of the Trials or Jace, Vryn's Prodigy  Flip. Domri is just bad, and unless you're playing EDH there are just better things you can be doing in the first place. Back in old Standard I ran Domri Rade alongside Boros Reckoner. That worked great. I would smack down 2 Burning-Tree Emissary with the fight. But that was then and this is now. Burning Tree still sees play in some decks, but I would not sleeve up Domri and Reckoner for a Modern deck.

You have to be able to make an argument for why you're doing what you're doing, and I can't conceive any reasonable argument for using Domri outside of EDH.
