Defender in Standard

Deck Help forum

I think everyone here already know of the new enchantment, Assault Formation. While it looks great and all, I for the life of me can't make a decklist that really 'clicks' with that card. Can anyone here help with a decklist for Standard, or maybe a card suggestion? Thanks

Also I've been thinking to tinker with it with Sight of the Scalelords since most defender have inherent high toughness

There just aren't enough good defenders in standard for it to be used. Maybe modern?

If you're not on a budget you could go with the Assault Formation, Shape the Sands, Sylvan Caryatid, Big butts with functional abilities, white comes to mind. And maybe Genesis Hydra as both a tutor for permanants and a possible win con. White also offers protection spells to save from removal, or maybe even splash black for your own removal. Or both for an Azban swing on things. The possibilities are endless, just depends on what you feel comfortable with I suppose.

Assault Formation does make Siege Rhino better as a 5/5 essentially lol. Add that to Sight of the Scalelords (a card I think is cool but too expensive for competitive play) and you get what is essentially a 7/7 trampling vigilant Siege Rhino. Like I said it's a little much for competitive play but I think it could be a fun concept in a lower tier deck.

Lol, Shape the Sands is essentially a pump in Assault Formation deck. I also haven't decided on what color to use along with yet. comes to minde, with draw spell and Wall of Frost. Or maybe with its many removal.

Don't forget, it's ability can be good even without the actual defender keyword. Nyx-Fleece Ram springs to mind.

Courser of Kruphix with its 2/4 essentially becomes a 4/4 for 3 mana.

Dragon's Eye Savants is very easily and effectively used with Assault Formation and it's morph trick is also very handy. If you'd like to splash it with black, you can easily make a good, aggresive defender-mill with Phenax, God of Deception. Add Commune with the Gods to tutor for Phenax, Assault Formation or defender you need in the moment ( Wall of Frost isn't bad at all) and maybe keep one Silumgar, the Drifting Death if you decide to play sultai. Defenders should hold opponents long enough to complete 6 mana, and 7/7 flying dragon with hexproof and token removal for attack is a great option for both - combat and mill.

Wall of Frost is definitely on the list. And if i indeed decide to use , I'm considering to use another enchantment, Bident of Thassa, which can make all the opponent's creature tap and attack futilely to my fat wall, thus clearing a way for my attack next turn. And all the counterspell is great for preventing any removal/boardwipe.

But Silumgar, the Drifting Death and Phenax, God of Deception is interesting. Way to think out of the box, Wiktul. A 7-power hexproof flier that wipe token everytime it attack does sound great.

Yes, it definitely does. Also Kin-Tree Invocation can be an option, even if Assault Formation won't come to hand. If you like to test all those ideas, you can see it here. I still don't know if it's not too much, I can see that deck with lesser, white defenders seems to be more popular now, but it's not my colour.

I really like the idea of running Phenax, God of Deception with defenders.

Yup, Defender-Mill is such an interesting concept. Wall all their attack, then mill them to death. Hilarity ensues.

Especially when all U and W walls proper for this purpoce are burn-resistant, so all direct removal must be "wasted" by the opponent on our 2-3 mana defenders. What makes playing late-game single gamebreaker, like mentioned already Silumgar, the Drifting Death much more effective option.

And what's even more hilarious, Meandering Towershell finally has it's place in such deck! :D

I had a u/b mill after born of the gods came out. It used all high toughness creatures and paired them with Triton Tactics

Welp, here it is guys: Defender Onslaught. Thanks for all your suggestion, and I'll appreciate it if you can take a loot at the finished deck.

Cheers!
