Decks That Play Differently Each Time?

Deck Help forum

I want to build a deck that plays pretty differently/has a couple different wincons, but I have no clue where to start looking.

What is the deck that comes to mind when you read that? Because I have no clue.

grixis delver is a good deck for what youre describing, you can beat em with burn and Snapcaster Mage. or delve em out with your graveyard Gurmag Angler or Tasigur, the Golden Fang or flood the field with tokens through Young Pyromancer its got a lot of different ways to win. downside, its a pretty expensive list to put together. happy hunting!

This can relate to many different decks, it just depends on if you build'em that way. You can even do this with tribal decks. Don't mean to advertise, but if you want the deck for casual, snake tribal for example can do this if build properly. If you want to see what i mean, just take a look at the snake tribal on my profile. It can be aggro, it can grind and it can be midrange.

@seshiro_of_the_orochi, not to steal your thunder, dude, but, almost all tribals play similar, use small cmc creatures, add some lords, and beat face. I think he was looking for different mechanics and win cons, and with most tribals, your win cons are the same. there may be different variables from time to time, but pretty consistently tribal decks all play the same. this is the reason why I suggest most new players play tribal, easy to pilot, simple game plan, just pull it off. maybe snakes is different, but I doubt it.

Bulldawg1310: thunder not stolen. I repeat: thunder not stolen ;)

I get your point. It might be my personal enthusiasm about the deck, so my opinion MIGHT be tainted in green. Tribal decks mostly win by combat damage, that definitely is true. But snakes can both go big and go wide. They can deal incredible amounts of unblockable damage with Kaseto, Orochi Archmage. You can control the game with Sosuke's Summons plus Opposition. You can play with counters around Winding Constrictor, you can play madness style with Noose Constrictor and Honored Hydra. There is snakes on a plane, their is snakes on a plains. You can abuse Hapatra, Vizier of Poisons and Pharika, God of Affliction. After all, you're right. It's just tribal that wins by combat damage. But there are MANY different paths you can slither there.

I don't suppose you play EDH? With 100-card singleton, even with your commander being consistently available, it is easy to build toolbox with the less straight forward commanders, like Yeva, Nature's Herald or Sigarda, Host of Herons.

Ditto, SteelSentry. The best way to build a neat deck with multiple win-cons is EDH, because of the 100-card singleton deck restriction.

Modern/Standard don't offer the same variety, because they inherently reward consistency.

For example, take Oloro, Ageless Ascetic. You can win through Essence Harvest and Serra Avatar, Aetherflux Reservoir, or comboing with Exsanguinate, or just beating down. And it happens differently every game unless you run tutors.

A friend of mine at my LGS had a deck that would switch it's wincon via sideboard each game. I'm pretty sure he would use Kiki-Twin as his mainboard wincon, but next game he would switch in to Swans of Bryn Argoll control, effectively messing up the opponent's sideboard. It was fun to watch.

There was a reddit post just the other day discussing a single deck that is capable of winning in all 44 of the different ways a deck can win. It basically hinges on getting the same combo every time, though, so I imagine that despite ending the game differently each time, it probably plays very much the same each game. Still, might be of interest:https://www.reddit.com/r/magicTCG/comments/6ml63e/one_deck_44_kills_long/

Aside from that, I suspect you might be able to find something of interest if you search for "transformative sideboard" or "transformational sideboard". Some interesting decks come up.

If you play EDH casually, you can make decks that play out quite a bit differently each time. The commander, tutors, and multiple cards with similar effects can add redundancy and reduce the variance, though.
