Beast deck idea

Deck Help forum

Hi, I'm new to magic TCG and recently bought a deck builders toolkit. I've had fun so far making decks and playing casually with friends. I've decided that my favorite two colors are green and red. I would now like to purchase some cards for my first "real" deck. I want to build around the two cards, Marauding Maulhorn and Advocate of the Beast. Anyone have any ideas on what cards I should use?

Id suggest not using Marauding Maulhorn in your deck for starters. Do a card search for R/G beasts and see what comes up.

Hmm...Beast tribal, eh? I'd recommend Contested Cliffs, Leatherback Baloth, Baloth Woodcrasher, Rampaging Baloths, 2x Chancellor of the Tangle, Craterhoof Behemoth, Garruk's Horde and Garruk's Packleader, Ghor-Clan Rampager, Gruul Ragebeast, Krosan Warchief, Obstinate Baloth, Thragtusk, Lightning Bolts/Lightning Strikes/Crater's Claws or other burn spells, ramp spells such as Cultivate, Kodama's Reach, Explore, Exploration, etc. to try to win. The basic idea is to get your lands out fast and get your big crap out ASAP.

I have made a lot of tribal decks. I thought, that they where fun. But then when I got into a little more competitive magic, they aren't really used. I feel like, that they where a little waste of money.

If you want a deck, I think you should do something like RDW with maybe goblins. Just a fun little starter deck. Then you can later make it into a better Goblin deck. Then into at last a Legacy goblin deck. I wish I did that! :)

This isn't about being competitive. I just want a fun casual deck to play with.

Well, yea. I'm not talking about being competitive. I just say, that when you become more competitive (You will at some point), your beast deck will then just be a waste of money. You can make a fun casual deck, that does contain some good cards. So it's not just a waste of money :)

Thanks for the advice. Are mono-white token decks good for modern? That type of deck is my other interest.

NorthernRaven "Well, yea. I'm not talking about being competitive. I just say, that when you become more competitive..." Ummm... So you are talking about being competitive actually.

In my opinion, no deck you enjoy, or have enjoyed playing is "A waste of Money". Additionally, not all the players you play against will be always be 'competitive' players, and it is nice to have some not-too-lethal decks around to play with your friends with. I have over 40 decks built, from casual tribal decks to tournament winning netdecks, and I enjoy playing the non-tournament decks as much as any other. They are fun, themed constructs that represent a bit of my inner Johnny. To this day, I build more non-competitive decks than not, and Ive been playing for over 15 years.

kurthror Mono-White tokens was a good enough modern deck that they printed a whole tournement pre-constructed deck for it. So yeah its a good deck. Not caw-blade good, but still.
