Arena: Turning Skred Red into Shivan Red

Deck Help forum

I have a crazy idea that maybe I can take a proven deck type like skred red and perhaps i can pull it off as a "strictly worse" variant in MTG Arena...like instead of Koth of the Hammer have Sarkhan, Fireblood...instead of Blood Moon have Damping Sphere/Blood Sun/Alpine Moon..... and instead of Skred... have Shivan Fire ext ect ect.

Here is the Deck list idea... anyone have any thoughts on this idea or suggestions?

Let me get this straight:

  • Instead of planeswalker that wins you the game, you have one that simply cycles through your library, instead of doing anything to the board.

  • Instead of blood moon, an actual mana denial card that works only for your opponent, you have a card that taxes both players (sphere)/a card that does nothing (sun)/ a card that fixes their mana (alpine moon)?

  • So instead of Skred, a 1 mana indescriminate removal spell for anything, you have something that is worse than Shock until you pay 5 mana for it?

There is no possible way to translate what skred red does to standard. You have none of the factors you have in Modern in the current standard.

agreed its nowhere near as good in all areas... more so just attempting to mimic it as close as possible...at least deck philosophy of skred red.

  • Shivan Fire caught my attention because of its ability to grow in the late game in the way skred gets stronger as more snow permanents are in play... perhaps Banefire would be more suitable in this aspect... idk still just an idea t this point.

  • mimicing Blood Moon is by far the toughest thing to do... is this the main thing you were getting at with not having the same factors in standard as modern Boza?... Blood Sun/Alpine Moon seem to be dead in all scenarios i typically come across/can think of in arena....but Damping Sphere might be good in those izzet matchups with Guttersnipe/Electrostatic Field/Niv-Mizzet, Parun... otherwise just might be nice to slow the creatures from being all dumped into play in one turn against the merfolk matchups or similar.

  • Sarkahn is no koth but i figure he's a better option than Chandra, Bold Pyromancer (i think anyway...) Have his abilities be used to ditch the least useful card in hand to hopefully topdeck something more relevent and his other ability to lay down a threat like Verix Bladewing and still leave mana open for another burn spell of even just pay that kicker cost.... his ultimate of 4 5/5 flyers is kinda cool but yeah its not koths emblem by a long shot.

another thing i just thought of would be to try Silent Gravestone and Squee, the Immortal to act as a Relic of Progenitus and Eternal Scourge.

I like the idea, but you can cut the mana denial. It is almost useless in the current standard format. Simply add something like Gob chainwhirler, which is generically good. Legion Warboss might be worth it. I really like converting decks to other formats. Azor's Gateway  Flip and The Immortal Sun could be really good. (Especially Azor's Gateway  Flip+Banefire.)

Also, Arch of Orazca can be your Scrying Sheets.

love the suggestions Flooremoji! the only issue with The Immortal Sun is that it turns of my own walker :/

I was reffering to the fact that none of the cards in the Modern list have adequate standard equivalents. It is easy to do go Goblin Rabblemaster -> Legion Warboss, but red control decks in Modern and Legacy are relying on disruption to gain the upper hand like Chalice of the Void or Blood Moon or Trinisphere. There are no standard cards that do that. Same with the wincons - Koth and Sarkhan just do not do the same thing.

You may make a mono red deck that is not aggro in standard, but it cannot be a standard version of skred red. The tools are lacking.

Your best bet is something like Sarkhan's Dragon Den.

There is legit only like one card from skred with a playable standard counterpart. This is just a complete disaster.

I hear ya Boza... Damping Sphere doesnt have anywhere near the effectiveness of those cards and only has a few matchups where it conditionally useful such as izzet/merfolk brews missing landdrops...but then again i think just about every matchup is nice when the opponent misses landdrops lol.... its just the closest thing i can come up with to mimic the disruption of Blood Moon thats in skred red in the same way that Silent Gravestone and Arch of Orazca dont exaclty equate to their desired counterparts of Relic of Progenitus or Scrying Sheets.

This may very well be a disaster jparker-sartori21 however; i figured using the tappedout community as a resource for ideas could help because there are Way better/"In-the-know" brewers on here than i am.... and besides arena is free so why not :p

my "Real" decklist that i run on arena is very similar list to that Argy has being a Dragon brew and burning out all the threats and then just Demanding Dragon them to death.... it definitely has satisfactory win rates (for me anyway) I was just looking for a new route to take with spending my wild cards for building an alternative brew....that wasnt some God forsaken token deck.
