i need help to decide whether go for the throat or abrupt decay would be better in my modern b/g dredge aggro deck.

Abrupt Decay hits Blood Moon if you float the necessary mana ahead of time. It also hits Detention Sphere (is anybody even using that?) and all of Affinity, which Go for the Throat is completely dead against.

It depends on what your weaknesses are. Abrupt Decay is great because it can hit non creatures as well, while Go for the Throat can hit bigger creatures that decay can't. I personally prefer Abrupt Decay for the flexibility.

It's important to note that Abrupt Decay hits Goyf, Bob, and Snapcaster.

More importantly, it kills Liliana of the Veil .

Abrupt decay for sure, no question about it,

In fact, your deck is significantly worst if you are use go for the throat instead of abrupt decay.

@zandl you are it hits most of affinities biggest threats, but keep in mind abrupt decay DOES NOT affect Inkmoth Nexus or Blinkmoth Nexus , both of which are incredibly dangerous if left unchecked. It also doesn't hit any other man lands, the most significant of which being Celestial Colonnade . So be aware of that when using it.

Go for the Throat doesn't hit Afinity's lands, either.

@zandl I know, but you said abrupt decay hits all of affinity, but Inkmoth Nexus and Blinkmoth Nexus account for a huge % of affinities wins, so I thought it was worth mentioning as to not cause any confusion.

Also worth considering - Affinity represents something like 10% and upwards of the metagame, making a heavy amount of Go for the Throat pretty awkward. You're far more likely to run into Affinity than you are to need to kill something 4 CMC or greater in Modern. The only real downside to Abrupt Decay is it can't hit manlands.

I would like to make a formal apology on behalf of my terrible grammar in these last couple of posts. I'm using an Ipad that likes to butcher everything I say and eat my keypad inputs. I'll be more careful in the future.

It's fine. I've just stopped trying to use T/O on my iPhone.

Yep can't hit man lands, but rips every other card in the format to shit. Stick with Abrupt Decay .

Victim of Night could also work if getting double black is not a problem as it hits manlands (expect for Mutavault and you will rarely every see zombies, vamps and wolfs in modern), but Abrupt Decay is usually the best choice. :3

Yeah, Victim of the night is another card I would probably prefer over GFtT. But, like snowstorm said, abrupt decay is still the winner here.

If manlands are a problem (I found they were while testing my G/B rock), run Fulminator Mage s in the side.

April 21, 2014 9:20 p.m.

Both? I run 3 Abrupt Decay with 1 GFtT in my Jund deck, because Spellskite is a card.

Chief, I would recommend using 3 abrupt decays and Terminate instead if you don't already. Otherwise Dismember and Slaughter Pact are both decent option as well. Abrupt decay is too good to not run at least 3 of them but Go for the Throat just shouldn't be used IMHO.

It's hefty bargain of "does not work against one of the best decks in the format and is vulnerable to Spellskite" is just not worth risking. Especially with options like the above mentioned Slaughter Pact , Dismember , and Terminate in the format. Even the classic Lightning Bolt is probably superior. But the op doesn't run red so I guess lightning bolt and terminate are sort of irrelevant.

Lol I literally run all of those for the versatility each offers. I would just like to point out that Twin, Melira Pod, and Kiki Pod all use Spellskite to protect their combos. Go for the Throat can't target their Spellskite , so I believe it's useful enough to include if it happens to be dead against Affinity.

Aahhh, I was not aware that Spellskite was an illegal target. I thought you were aloud to target with go for the throat, but the result would be an unaffected Spellskite.

yeah when your changing the target of something you still need to choose a new legal target. If not Spellskite would almost be like a psuedo counter spell against Go for the Throat and such.
