Planeswalker spell concept

Custom Cards forum

Hello with the last core set having so much Chandra centric cards I thought of a fun concept for future sets.

It is a series of spells based around the planeswalker of the set, each spell would be "through the eyes of {insert planeswalker here}" and have symmetric effects. So for core 2020 with Chandra I would have made "through the eyes of Chandra" it would be 3 red, an instant that deals 2 damage to everything. If the next core set is for Vraska for instance I would do "through the eyes of Vraska" 2 black and green, sorcery each player choses a nonland permanent an opponent controls and that permanent becomes an 0/5 artifact creature with defender.

Im curious as to what spells you would make for each planeswalker. (note that spells don't need to actually go along with the planeswalker but it is cool to see your ideas for it,) please share in the comments.

Each player draws two cards, then discards three cards at random.

"MWA HAHA I suck at flavor text but imagine discarding three cards at random on turn 2 AHAHA"

TypicalTimmy I applaud a very ingenious design on an alternative cost. I'm not particularly a fan of limiting the alternative cost to a specific planeswalker, so allow me to suggest a revised version of the mechanic:

Big Brain Plays

Instant

Loyalty -2 (You may have a planeswalker you control that shares all colors of this spell, use this as a loyalty ability and pay -2 rather than pay this spell's mana cost.)

Draw five cards, then put three cards from your hand on top of your library.

This means that any planeswalker that has affinity for the colors needed to cast that spell, could do it. It puts less restriction on the design space of the mechanic, as you don't need a critical mass of the same planeswalker to be able to use the mechanic. Otherwise it would basically restrict the mechanic to Jace, Ajani, Gideon, Liliana, Chandra, Nissa, Garruk and Bolas. As the only planeswalkers who have appeared many times since the introduction of planeswalkers. If you had a Loyalty Arlinn, there would be two planeswalkers as of this moment who could use that mechanic. That's a very narrow design space.

It does however introduce a "problem" where loyalty cost is uneven between planeswalkers, as some have very big loyalty swings (Huatli, Radiant Champion) and others are fairly restricted (Davriel, Rogue Shadowmage).

That being said, you could make specific versions of the mechanic, similar to how WotC changed the Partner mechanic for Commander to a specific pairing.

You could have Loyalty Angrath -3 (You may have an Angrath planeswalker you control that shares all colors with this spell, use this as a loyalty and pay -3 rather than pay this spell's mana cost.)
