Introducing, the Homestarrunner.com Characters, as PLANESWALKERS!

I am currently making a Homestarrunner.com block (or 2), and would like to advertise the 12 main characters as Plainswalkers. Of course, if anyone has any feedback for them, feel free to let me know.

  • Bubs
  • Coach Z
  • Homestar Runner
  • Homsar
  • The King of Town
  • Marzipan
  • Pom-Pom
  • The Poopsmith
  • Strong Bad
  • Strong Mad
  • Strong Sad
  • The Cheat

  • Now what is with the "team" thing? Basically this is an alternate sub-type method for me to use to present the world of homestarrunner.com. Because one character can appear in all 5 colours, I needed some way to bring them together. Hence the "team" idea was born.

The character colours are hard to see at first for some. I'll define my choices here.

Bubs is because he is the business guy. While he runs a seemingly fair conses5ion stand, he also operates a black market around the back of his shop.

Coach Z is really hard to denote, as he is the one that is the most disgusting (drinks listerine) but yet has no "nature" qualities, so I didn't put him as because of that. I put him as because he really doesn't mean any bad, it's just his disgusting life choices put people off. The disgusting thing is the reason for his deathtouch mechanic and damage abilities.

Homestarrunner is because he technically is good natured, but is also quite dumb. His athletic ability helps pertain to his and . The reason why he has 4 abilities is because him and Strong Bad are the two main characters for the site. So it felt natural to put them on opposing sides. This conflict helped me choose the creature base for his abilities.

Homsar basically makes no sense. I would put him as a xilling planeswalker (similar to Ashiok) because the idea that he just makes you want to "eat your leg than be around that guy" -Strong Bad, sort of fits a xilling theme. However Bubs already is under and I don't want two planeswalkers under the same colours. So I decided it would befit him as an unhinged type card, as he literally makes no sense.

The King of Town would normally be because A) he is a ruler, and B) he has a lot of impulses with eating. However it is hard to make a "devour" like mechanic fit white or blue, so I stuck him in colours. It is also fitting to note that he only acts like a king in the SBCG4AP games done by Tell Tale Games, that is a total of 2 times.

Marzipan is because she is the goodie goodie person. While it would make more sense to put her under colours, I really don't want too many three colour plainswalkers in this deck. If I didn't decide this, Marzipan, Bubs and Coach Z would all be tri-coloured. Her avocation of the environment and the well being of creatures defines her recycle and regenerate mechanics.

Pom-Pom is colourless because he has no specific traits that pop-out in any colour. He is technically that "really cool ninja guy" and I felt that colourless just fits him the most. Hence the Ninjitsu like effects.

The Poopsmith. There really is no other colours for him. HE DEALS WITH POOP.

Strong Bad definitely belongs in Grixis, he actively sabotages stuff be it egging other people's buildings on halloween, or usurping the throne of The King of Town. I had his -1 be "destroy target permanent" but I wanted to use the sabotage mechanic, and have decided to fit it into most Strong Bad and The Cheat themed creatures.

Strong Mad, 100% impulse. Dumb, strong, and likes to break stuff.

Strong Sad, the absolute loner, obviously has clinical depression issues, but as the story of homestarrunner.com goes on, he seems to get better. He fits because he is the smartest character of them all, but yet has no physical power nor willpower to act on his intelligence.

The cheat, similar to strong bad in sabotaging stuff, but mainly deals with objects in that he wrecks them somehow. I may change his abilities to match either sabotage, and/or be related to noncreature nonland permanents.

Hint hint: Something special happens if you click on the cards ;)

Uh, The part in coach Z's paragraph should really say:

Coach Z is really hard to denote, as he is the one that is the most disgusting (drinks listerine) but yet has no "nature" qualities, so I didn't put him as because of that.

This brings back some classic memories of being in school and doing nothing. Except Burninating all the People...

I think many of the abilities are too strong. I see that alot with homemade planeswalkers though.

That's mainly because they are within a frame of reference of the WotC vacuum, as we compare them to WotC cards. While I completely understand the fact they are too strong, in fact, the entire block feels like this. Once I've gotten every card down (in some ... 2 years or so, bloody massive this is) I'll get the T/O and MSE community to test it out. This is where most of the changes will take place. Fine-tuning mechanics, cmc, ability costs, etc etc.

However, the entire set may actually work out quite well, as everything is costed in reference to each other. It could be very much like a faster Zendikar draft, and the Innistrad/RTR standard (as this could very well be two blocks), but only time will tell.

I would still like to know which abilities you think are over-costed. While I'm hesitant on making so many heavily multi-coloured planeswalkers, I can make Bubs Esper, Coach Z Junk, and Strong Sad Azorius. That is about it for adding colours to compensate for strong abilities.

You can say that these blocks will be designed with three layers. On the first layer we will have two main teams. Homestar vs Strong and most of the cards can be played in one of these two teams.

The second layer consists of the 12 main character teams, and each have their own design. However, certain characters are really hard to do, and they occasionally overlap with other teams when they are meant to be played separately. Bubs turned out to be a dimir attrition team with Propaganda effects, and this may play too well in the Strong Bad or Strong Sad team when Bubs is not associated with them. However I had no idea what to do with Coach Z and Homsar. As neither of their personalities have anything that can be fit into a magic mechanic. The best I could do with Coach Z is with his disgusting nature, which brings forth the "getting damaged upon dealing or dealt damage" sort of thing.

The third layer consists of just the teams in general. Now there are numerous different kinds of these teams and they consist of the bulk of the teams a card belongs to. Some teams are related to the setting they are in, like 1936, 20X6, Halloween, Videlectrix and Xeriouxly Forxe. Other teams include supporting characters like Trogdor, Fhqwgads, Dangeresque, Rather Dashing and The Cheat Commandos. Finally, we have the general objects teams like Book, Machine, Food, Paper and Weapon.
