How do I word this?

card

I want a card that can get through hexproof, without being too overpowered. I'm not too sure if this is the proper way to word it, and the name also isn't my favorite.

(Yes, that's Assassin's Creed.)

To properly word what it currently says:
Name a creature card. Destroy target named creature.

To get around hexproof, w/o being overpowered?:
Split Second.
All creatures lose hexproof. Then destroy target creature if it lost hexproof this way. All creatures who lost hexproof this way gains hexproof.

I'm even a bit iffy on even if that is right, but that would be the gist of it.

Another way to do it would be to exile all targetable creatures then -X/-X or X -1/-1 counters on all creatures, then the exiled ones return. But I see that one being broke.

doesn't really have a way to remove effects like hexproof, that I know of, that's more of a thing. normally either uses targeted removal or uses mass removal/effect. Occasionally there will be a negative effect for the person casting dependant on the balance of CMC and desired effect.

What could be possible is something like this:

Cull the Bloodline

Name a creature type.

Each player sacrifices a permanent of the named creature type.

Delirium: If there are four or more card types among cards in your graveyard, for each creature sacrificed this way search the graveyard, hand, and library of that spell's controller for any number of cards with the same name as that spell, exile those cards, then that player shuffles his or her library.

You can go with a Council's Judgment type effect.

Death by Decree

Name a creature. Destroy each creature with the chosen name.

a bit stronger than your original design as it can technically kill several cards with the same name, but that's not terribly common except with tokens.

How about "Target player sacrifices each creature with hexproof he or she controls."? Would be fair at I think.

Maybe something like:

"Choose up to one creature on the battlefield. If you do, destroy the chosen creature."

Selfish Doppelganger

Creature - Shapeshifter

You may have Selfish Doppelganger enter the battlefield as a copy of any creature on the battlefield. If you do, each player sacrifices each creature with the same name as the chosen creature he or she controls.

2/2

  • Not sure the wording is correct for the 2nd sentence.
  • Is more blue oriented though.
  • Changing 'controls' by 'owns' would be more fun for EDH :)
  • Sacrifice is maybe too pushed (goes around indestructible), destroy might be better.

Name a creature. Destroy each creature with the chosen name.

as already stated this is probably the cleanest wording and design, especially at 4 mana (we already have Sever the Bloodline and that seems better compared to your design). if you insist on only getting rid of ONE copy of the creature then

Name a creature. Destroy a creature with the chosen name.

Pretty sure the best most balanced way would be...

All creatures lose hexproof until end of turn. Then destroy target creature.

Would probably be balanced at 4 or maybe 3 if sorcery

Some of the responses aren't thinking within the flavour of the color.

IMO those that do are having a tough time because there really isn't a precedent right now for this specific interaction, not in the wording you are looking for anyway. A new mechanic would have to be invented for it to fit or the card would have to be dual colored.

the new mechanic could be something like...

Unstoppable: This card ignores hexproof, shroud, indestructible, and protection.

It would be flavorful as it is like nothing could stop the assassin

Pizzagod, that does not work. That way you cannot select a hexproof target for your spell.

Choice is the way to go.

"Choose up to one creature. That creature's controller sacrifices it."

Using sacrifice just ot make it more black-aligned.
