EDH tutor commander

Custom Cards forum

I love weird magic cards.

I often find myself wanting to build a EDH deck around weird magic cards, especially enchantments, creatures, and artifacts that do wacky things. Take Bludgeon Brawl for example, wacky card that I'd love to see every game in a deck built around it. However, for me, the casual builder and player, consistency is a problem. Who wants to run 10 tutors in their deck to make sure you get that build around card every time? That seems excessive. And then it will be destroyed, and your deck is somewhat shut down.

In light of this desire to build around a single card in a 100 card singleton format, I have designed a commander that will get you the card you need every time, hopefully without being too busted. Without further adieu:

Inveniet

Legendary Creature - Spirit

At the beginning of the game, if Inveniet is in your Command Zone, choose a card name.

When Inveniet enters the battlefield from the Command Zone, you may search your library, your graveyard, and cards you own in exile for a card with the chosen name, and put it into your hand. If your library is searched this way, shuffle it.

2/3

Notes on design.

  • Inveniet is the latin word for "find." Seemed fitting.
  • 5 colors so cards of every color can be built around. I am considering making a colorless commander with a irrelevant five color ability, that way if you felt like it you could build a 1-4 color version to go with the build around card you picked.
  • The beginning of the game is so you can only pick one card, I'm not sure if it makes it too restrictive.
  • Only triggers on ETB from the command zone to cut down on possible abuse, and the commander tax will impede repeat searches. It could be worded to work from the library in the 99, but that seemed like too many words.
  • Searches library, graveyard, and exile, so no matter where it is you can get it.
  • 2/3 spirit just because. Could be anything really.

So, what do you all think? Broken? Silly? Awesome? Needs some work? Would love to know y'alls thoughts.

I feel like people would run this and say Sol Ring or Mana Crypt more often then not. Personally I would name Waste Not .

So two things:

  1. The cost is too damn high for a single card tutor that can only tutor for a single card. Maybe lower it to 4 and give it a ability (similar to General Tazri ). While I do agree that allowing for search of more than one card could become seriously degenerate, especially since the card can hit both graveyard and library, but I think you can reduce the cost. Or raise the power to a 3/4.

  2. The issue with the exile clause is it might not work out the way you think. Primarily it's the fact that cards that work like that ( Glittering Wish , Cunning Wish , etc) don't actually grab cards removed from the game by effects such as Path to Exile . They only grab cards signified by something like a sideboard.

What might work out better is if it sent the card to the command zone and allowed you to cast it any time it was legal, then had a five colored ability to send it back to the command zone.

Oof 5 color tutor commander. This would break cedh tables in my opinion. They already play worse cards just for the color, this could just tutor up a flash-hulk combo and end the game

I know this changes the spirit of the card (pun intended), but how about:

Inveniet

, : Search your library for a card and put it into your hand, then shuffle your library. You lose 2 life.
