Cycling Legend

Custom Cards forum

I wanted to build a cycling deck, but I really didn't want to have to use Zur the Enchanter (though Partners would help with that), and since no Cycling general exists yet, I thought I'd create one.

Azadal Turias

Legendary Creature-Human Wizard

Cycling abilities you activate cost up to less to activate.

If you would draw a card from a cycling ability, draw an additional card.

2/3

Does this seem overpowered? I tried to balance it as best as I could.

Perhaps change the second ability to a loot? It seems very strong to slam this on turn 5 and cycle through your entire deck. There are 80 cards with Cycling in Esper, so it'd be not unreasonable to draw your entire deck when you play this. Or instead of less, you make it less, but with the "This effect reduces only the amount of colored mana you pay." ability, to make that less possible. Only 20 cards cycle for a single colored mana, so it'd be less easy to just draw you entire deck.

So maybe make the Cycling cost up to less, and the second one be a loot? The idea behind the first ability is a budget alternative of Fluctuator in case it spikes in price (It's on the Reserved List, after all).

I recognized the call back, but combining Fluctuator with an additional draw off every cycle dramatically reduces the chance of whiffing by hitting to many non-cycling lands. Your changes make sense. You could probably keep the additional draw at less, because the creature has no protection from removal.

So like this?

Cycling abilities you activate cost up to less to activate.

If you would draw a card from a cycling ability, draw an additional card, then discard a card.

I mean, if you're not trying to use Astral Slide, then Muldrotha, the Gravetide synergizes super well with cycling.

As for your custom card, I think your second try is closer. You could shift it a bit to say "whenever you discard a card from your hand, scry 1" to make it more generic, but I don't think you'd need to change anything as is.

landofMordor: My problem with Muldrotha is that everyone and their mother has a deck with her. The beauty with Astral Slide is that, at the very worst, is an attack deterrent. I'd add Muldrotha if I was going Atraxa colors.

I just had an epiphany after reading that second part. I think this is it:

Cycling abilities you activate cost up to less to activate.

Whenever you discard a card, scry 1.

If I got the stack rules right, you can put the triggers so the scry resolves first, then draw from the cycling ability.

I like this version a lot more as well. Strong, but not broken.

Latest version is cool, but doesn't feel very esper to me. The cost reduction is colourless, the scry is U, maybe B because it has a discard trigger. Maybe add a lifegain to the discard trigger (similat to Tatyova, Benthic Druid)?

So...

Cycling abilities you activate cost up to less to activate.

Whenever you discard a card, scry 1 and gain 1 life.

...like that?

Ooh yes that last version rocks! Feels pretty good for its cost, too.

(You're right about Ms. Gravetide, but my feel is that a Cycling deck would be a unique spin on it, and you wouldn't have to include some of the "edhrec cards" that you'd see in most builds like Meren, etc. But I like the route you've chosen!)

Phaetion: exactly like that.

Perfect. Then I'll go with this. Thanks everyone.
