Azusa, Wandering Sage

Azusa, Lost but Seeking is a very awesome creature, especially in EDH, but she does have a number of limitations, in my mind; first, she is monocolored, which limits deckbuilding options in EDH format; second, her ability is great, but it simply gives a player access to greater amounts of mana more quickly, without actually altering the board state; third, her being a 1/2 make her very vulnerable to destruction.

Therefore, I have created a new version of her, which I hope everyone likes.

Azusa, Wandering Sage Show

This card was heavily influenced by Omnath, who has gained an additional color with each new incarnation. I reduced the number of additional lands that she grants to balance her power, but I instead gave her abilities that trigger from the additional land that she grants, one for each of her colors (her first ability grants more life than the damage dealt by her third ability because life gain is usually not as powerful as is damage). Her converted mana cost is the same, but I believe that being three colors balances that with her increased utility. I contemplated making her a 2/3, but I thought that that would make her too powerful, so I instead made her a 2/2.

What does everyone else say about this card? Do you like it?

It's an interesting Swiss-army knife type of commander that can do a number of things. And I get the "lands matter"+ aspect of her from the existing, but I don't know enough about the character, even after a quick google, to know why life gain, direct damage and token generation fit.

So, I like it, but I'm curious to know you shifted her to Naya instead of, say Bant or (and this would be purely for lands-matter mechanics/last year's pre-contstructed Commander decks rather than what seems to be the character's temperament) Jund.

+ I was going to say she should probably have the Landfall keyword, but Omnath doesn't, so maybe they're moving away from that

Seems like the casting cost is too low. With the third landfall trigger and a Scapeshift you just kind of win.

I would say would be more fair

It's less of an instant win in commander, which, I think, is the format they're working on, but you're right that that combo probably requires either bumping the cost or changing the trigger so that it can only target creatures.

fadelightningmm, that seems reasonable, but, in that case, she definitely would need to have higher power and toughness, would she not?

DemonDragonJ not necessarily there are plenty of commanders that have 2 power and toughness. Even at 5 mana the effect is pretty powerful so the low power and toughness serves as a balancing act. That and the fact that it’s not in Yarok colors

fadelightningmm, I cannot speak for all players, but there is no way that I would spend 5 mana on a creature that can be destroyed by Shock .

fadelightningmm, how is Yarok at all related to this discussion?

December 25, 2019 12:16 p.m.

DemonDragonJ Yarok doubles up triggers from permanents entering the battlefield if this Azusa and Yarok were in the same colors it would be a gross combo is all I was saying.

As for being a 2/2 for 5 there are worse things. I wouldn’t worry about a shock in EDH anyway the number of decks running actual shock has to be minuscule. According to EDHRec it is literally 1%

I’m just offering my 2 cents on the card though. I by no means am part of RnD and my opinion should count as such

fadelightningmm, yes I perfectly understand, and I was not attempting to criticize you, in any way.

Here is a new version of this card:

Azusa, Wandering Sage Show

I raised her mana cost and also her toughness, but I did not increase her power, since her original incantation had higher toughness than power. I personally believe that, if a creature costs 5 or more mana to summon should be able to survive a Lightning Bolt .

Now what does everyone else think of her? Is she good as she is, or should she be a 3/4?
