What's Your Favorite Deck?

What's your favorite deck, and why? Personally, my favorite decks are my Kruphix and Sidisi decks. Here's why:

Kruphix: Kruphix, at least for me, embodies the battlecruiser format, while not being a terrible deck. Here's some perfectly normal late-game plays. These can come as early as Turn 5!

  1. Have 1.2605068e+24 mana floating in your mana pool (this actually happened once). This number has a ridiculous amount of numbers, somewhere in the hundreds of thousands of digits. For perspective, 1 billion has 10 digits.
  2. Permanent Insurrection with Mass Manipulation
  3. 6.3025338e+23/6.3025338e+23 Oozes with Gelatinous Genesis. Remember, those numbers have thousands of digits.
  4. All the lands in your deck with Animist's Awakening.
  5. And so much more!

And now, onto my Sidisi deck. This deck is much more competitive, and it runs like a greased wheel. Everything comes together at once for one explosive turn. You'll be reanimating fatties as early as Turn 3, and the deck combines something for everyone.

  • If ya like tokens, Sidisi can pump them out at hilarious rates, creating a zombie army to trample over your opponents!
  • If you enjoy going tall with fatties, Sidisi is a prolific graveyard filler, reanimating big bois like Razaketh, the Foulblooded or Sheoldred, Whispering One left, right, and center!
  • If you like comboing off like a boss, there are some great combos in the deck, one of which I discovered myself. Ping everyone to death with Nooze lines, mill yourself out for value and profit with Hypnotoad + Golgari Guy, or do it better with Hogaak, Arisen Necropolis + Altar of Dementia + Sidisivalue!
  • Here's the deck link: The Deck that Death Forgot [[PRIMER]].

  • BONUS POINTS: If you post a good description of your deck, I'll upvote it.

  • EVEN MORE BONUS POINTS: If you describe a fun game you played with it, I'll comment!

  • WOW, SO MANY BONUS POINTS: Remember, mutual upvotes are appreciated. If you see a deck you like, upvote it! And if you have the time, consider upvoting my deck. I always appreciate it.

My favorite deck is a Kess, Dissident Mage deck that combos off using Demonic Consultation+Thassa's Oracle.

It's fun for me because of the diversity of all the cards while at the same time they do essentially the same thing: slow my opponents down until I can win by combo.

It's fun for me to always have an answer in hand to whatever my opponents play and the value in replaying spells.

A fun game I played once was a 1 vs 1 game with someone where I kept a 1 land hand and still won on turn five. I played a tapped land turn 1 and and passed. Turn 2 I got super lucky and topped decked a basic land allowing me to exile Simian Spirit Guide from my hand and tap out to cast both a Arcane Signet and another signet. I cast kess on turn 3 and cast consultation turn four naming Thassa's Oracle giving me the win on the next turn.

Hey man, your deck sounds great! I always love value, and Kess, Dissident Mage is one of the best generals for it. Do you have a link?

October 6, 2020 11:59 a.m.

My favorite is probably still my Torture-themed deck. It’s a Nekusar, the Mindrazer deck without any wheels, so generally it stays pretty-well under the radar, but the theme is dynamite and accidentally ends up fouling all sorts of other decks’ mechanics. Letting someone pull the trigger on an attempted semi-infinite turn/card-draw/tutor combo after they kill Nekusar is wonderful...when they forget the Copper Tablet or Psychogenic Probe or Whatever other totally random torture-junk I’ve got scattered about. “Sorry, you’ve got to play it out to see if you die first...” ;P

October 6, 2020 12:24 p.m.

Atla Palani, Nest Tender, by far! I love making a high-variance card perform exactly how I want it to, and Naya is my favorite color combo by a long shot. I used to have an infinite combo in the deck, but I took it out because I would get it too often and it was boring ;). I can still get into moments of high synergy where I basically put half the creatures in my deck into play in one turn. That's always fun!

Man, Atla Palani, Nest Tender sounds like a great general! How did you build her? Do you have a link for your deck? I'd love to upvote it. Thanks for sharing, Omniscience_is_life (love the username)!

I have Elk Sisay, with Sisay, Weatherlight Captain and Jegantha, the Wellspring. Only problem? I need to spend $20 for the other three cards in the combo....

But other than that, Elk Sisay is entirely ramp and disruption.

I also have Mairsil, and that's just really easy to randomly win by drawing one specific card. I need more 1-card combos tho.

Sultai_Sir says... #8

Elk Sisay sounds intruiging. Do you have a decklist? Also, what are some of the combos with Mairsil, the Pretender? Thanks for sharing, TriusMalarky

TriusMalarky says... #9

Mairsil, the Pretender and Mirror-Mad Phantasm mills your deck. Narcomoeba and Haunted Dead provide creatures for Dread Return to get Necrotic Ooze and then you can set up some combos from there. I forget the exact combos right now.

Also Hell's Caretaker means you can go off on your next upkeep.

Scion of the Ur-Dragon. so many neat interactions like transforming into different things when unblocked depending on the situation. surprise Balefire Dragon, nichol bolas, or even Moltensteel Dragon then Skithiryx, the Blight Dragon in the same turn for instant KO. or Teneb, the Harvester to reanimate something.

or i just dump all my mana into the ability during an opponents end step right before my turn, to load up the grave for a Patriarch's Bidding or Primevals' Glorious Rebirth with a haste guy like Dragonlord Kolaghan or Karrthus, Tyrant of Jund. this also triggers a ton of damage off of Scourge of Valkas and Dragon Tempest

Sultai_Sir: i can probably post the deck later today if i remember. the decks a bit too "top heavy" to be competitive though i think. its basically just ramp, big dragons, and whatever card draw/removal i could fit in. Temur Ascendancy works pretty well in the deck, especially when i have one of the aforementioned mass reanimation spells.

I love pretty much any Boros powerhouse type of deck, but my favorite list is probably my Agrus Kos, Wojek Veteran deck that's pretty budget & is a remaster of the first edh deck I ever built. It's one of the few brews I've made in paper, so I can sit down and have some fun with it pretty much whenever I have time. The first time I played with it, I was swinging for 16 by turn 3 or 4 against decks that cost 6 times as much money as mine. I like it because it's simple, it's one of my favorite playstyles, and it does what it wants to do relatively consistently without tutors. I also like it because it's proof that your wallet is not a major limiting factor to making a good deck.

I love Feldon of the Third Path. My deck is FELDON EDH PRIMER: FELDON NEEDS SOME LOVE. The best part about it is that it breaks the fundamental rule of EDH: singleton. Feldon is capable of making multiple copies of cards that shouldn't exist in multiple in EDH, like eldrazi or Utvara Hellkite. Feldon is a forgotten commander, so he often gets underlooked and can slowly police the board until he's ready to show why you shouldn't forget him.

This is my favorite deck of all time and my magnum opus. It's a monogreen list with Yeva, Nature's Herald at the helm. It has been geared and tuned to play formidably within the most current cEDH meta. It can win on any turn, phase, or basically any instance in which priority is passed. For that reason the deck list can get away with running cards like Heartwood Storyteller, which hard counter Ad Nauseam, Underworld Breach, or Isochron Scepter + Dramatic Reversal.

An opponent once went into an extensive counter war to resolve his Ad Nauseam, before it could resolve I casted Heartwood Storyteller. He drew half his deck, but upon attempting to combo off every single card netted the table a draw... eventually another counter war ensued drawing me more than half of my deck, once the player went for his Demonic Consultation with Thassa's Oracle's effect on the stack, I stormed off with an Veil of Summer + Allosaurus Shepherd protecting the most critical pieces of my combo.

You can check out the primer to learn how to storm off on other people's turn and actually win in Monogreen.

Hey everyone, I’ll chime in as well. I first became interested in commander when I picked up the Kaalia of the Vast precon a few years ago. Ever since then I’ve been working on making my Kaalia deck as effective as possible. Recently I dove into cEDH and I changed my deck from a traditional aggro build to a hybrid aggro-stax build and I’m very happy with it. Kaalia can be slower than other super fast competitive decks, but with the stax elements I can slow down other players enough to beat them down. An interesting combo is Rule of Law or Eidolon of Rhetoric with Possibility Storm. If your opponents don’t stop you from pulling off the combo, they can no longer play any spells, and you can proceed to beat their faces in.

Here’s the deck if anyone is interested: KAALIA'S CATACLYSM (Mardu Aggro Stax)

Besides Kaalia, recently I discovered Tinybones, Trinket Thief (who I call the Tiny Punisher because he can kill every other player single-handedly and reminds me of a tiny Frank Castle lol) and I had to design a deck around it. I focus on discard and stax effects with the goal of dealing damage with Tinybones or assembling a lethal combo. If Leyline of the Void is in play, and you spend at least 1 on Helm of Obedience’s triggered ability, you exile a player’s entire library instantly! My playgroup has seen me pull this off and it strikes fear into their hearts lol. Another insta-kill combo is Bolas's Citadel plus Aetherflux Reservoir and Sensei's Divining Top. You use the Top to draw a card and place it on the top of your deck, then cast the Top from the top of your deck with the Citadel for 1 life, then use the Top again to draw a card and place it on the top of your deck, etc. Eventually you draw your entire deck and the Resevoir will allow you to gain more life than you lose with the Citadel. Then you can easily kill each opponent with the Resevoir.

Feel free to check out the deck: TINYBONES: TINY PUNISHER (Mono-Black Stax)

My Ghave deck for my more powerful decks. Here. So much value, and Aristocrats is my preferred playstyle. Even if it weakens it, there's so many combos I love pulling off so it never gets dull for me.

For my weaker and combo/infinite combo-less decks, I love my Tomik deck. Nobody expects what gameplay I go for with the general, and its actually won me the most games out of all of my decks.

October 6, 2020 6:03 p.m.

:( not amazing at linking decks, the list should be on my profile though (however I recently added ten cards so it's a bit out of date :/). This is a great thread Sultai_Sir! Your username is great as well!

Purphoros, Bronze-Blooded. Man he embodies big red so damn well for me. It is so satisfying pumping out the big guys, that often don't see play due to their cmc. Bloodfire Colossus, Knollspine Dragon to draw obscene amounts (note you can cheat him into play anytime someone got whooped, not only when you did the whooping), Drakuseth, Maw of Flames and Dragon Mage, which becomes a Wheel of Fortune, that also did five to someone. And my absolute favorite interaction: turn 5 drop Purphoros, Bronze-Blooded, turn 6 drop the damn Fiery Emancipation (one devotion from early turns is not to much of magical christmas land) and then deliver some heavenly Smackdown to the poor soul not having blockers. Such a strong curve, makes people really anxious about a battlecruiser deck just deleting them. Add some ramp and you have a set straightforward gameplan if I have ever seen one.

I am a big fan of my mono-green voltron deck. It was built around Syr Faren, the Hengehammer, but it has a few alternate commanders, allowing it to feel different based off of what I want. The other commanders are Silvos, Rogue Elemental and Thrun, the Last Troll. On top of that, it runs spellshapers, which are by far my favorite creature type.

I have a hard time picking a favorite deck, but I like building things that set themselves apart or are unique for some reason, or follow an odd theme. One that I tuned for a long time is my Jodah deck, simply because it is so big and splashy, but also something that really only works with Jodah.

Jodah's Maelstrom EDH

I haven't really revisited the deck list in a while.

My favorites to play are probably Ravos & Tana Mutate or Tayam's Constellation EDH.
