What do you do when you have a big maybeboard?

What do you do when you have a big maybeboard with cards you think could be good and you can't say would be absolutely bad, but all the cards in your deck are even more so?

Cry.

But in all honesty, I'll usually do a purge of my maybe board after some time has passed. It's difficult for me to judge just after building a deck, so looking at it later with fresh eyes works better. If there are a lot of cards that you sorta kinda want to switch, I'll usually copy the deck, make the swaps, and see how it looks from there.

If you have a specific deck you're talking about, could you post the link? If this is just a general statement, ask yourself if the cards are situational, synergistic, good, or bad. I would generally warrant inclusion of synergistic cards, less so situational cards.

ctrl + a -> delete. Seriously, when your maybeboard is as large as your deck then it's no help. There's just too much going on. purge the list and then focus on where the deck needs a performace increase. And then actually make the changes.

I put in on tappedout.net and hit cycle. This thread is like going to leswhab and asking where you can buy tires.

honestly I cut the really under performing cards and just keep the inter-changeable pieces until I find a build that works for me. Do you have a deck in mind that you would like cuts?

keep in mind the direction of the deck anything that does not directly help with the decks main focus needs to go. make comparisons of everything in the deck to the remaining maybes, put in anything that is better throw out the rest. if that does not help post the deck and ask for help on it. people will rip it apart for you and you should listen to at least some of them.

Well it's mostly cause it's a deck that's less competitive and more fun, so a lot of the cards are on the maybeboard because they are on theme in unique, underrepresented ways.

My current deck is my best guess for the best combination of cards, but i still can't bring myself to stop considering all my options, you know?

The deck in question is Anything You Can Play, I Can Play Better.

I usually play pretty high level edh, so it's annoying for me to play at a shop level with normal players. I made breya for that reason. Just artifact goodstuff with a combo backup. Some interaction too, but nothing crazy.

Then I saw my list was 120 cards.

I just started axing off cards. It's hard for me to make lower-level decks as I don't have a good grasp of what people like playing against normally. At first, it was just pure goodstuff. The list then began to evolve into more of a token-based strategy. It felt like more fun to play as there was more of a focus. That dropped my card count way down.

Don't get me wrong, I still have cards I'd like to play, but things like Daretti do very little for the deck, so they can be axed off.

Yeah, typically I start with an outline of what I want and I assign numbers to each of those categories before I even look at cards for the deck. The downside is that as I looked through cards, I found cards I wanted that aren't in any of those categories, so now I have the maybeboard of 25 cards lol

I will just start cutting cards at random until I have a somewhat cohesive pile of 100 cards, then I will start play-testing. If a card performs well, I keep it in. Otherwise, it gets the axe and I try something else. Repeat Ad Nauseam

That honestly sounds way too time consuming. I'd rather not have to play a deck a ton to arrive at something playable...

It honestly doesn't take as long as it sounds. The idea is to start playing with the deck right away, to avoid the paralysis of having a massive list of cards and not knowing which ones to start off with. As you play you quickly will figure out what works and what doesn't. Kind of like how some writers write whatever comes to their mind first, then go back and sort out their thoughts later. Everyone has their own way of doing things, right?

Of course, no deck is ever 100% complete. There is always room for improvement ;)

I try to build from the ground up to avoid huge maybeboards.

Always start by building my landbase, usually 36 lands. Then depending on the deck I add my staple ramp / draw spells, usually ~20 cards. Then I add 10 or so utility staples (your Lightning Greaves, etc). Then I add 5 or so wipes.

From here I know exactly how many spots I have remaining and just add the best cards I can find until I hit 99. If it goes slightly over then I just order the extra cards for my sideboard.

Building this way makes it a lot less likely to have to cut 30 something cards from my list

Lol i did that exact same thing except I added to my maybeboard instead, and now I got my 25 cards on maybe lol

I personally like big maybeboards. Keeps the deck fun to play with different combos but if you are getting serious keep 5 maybe cards. Have at least 3 combos to go to. Have you deck direct right to those combos.
