What are your pet cards.

Everyone has a pet card. It's a card that isn't a staple card, but for some reason, it's amazing to you, and you try to fit it in all your decks. My pet cards are, Paradise Plume, Vedalken Orrery, and Triumph of the Hordes

what are yours?

Phyrexian Obliterator is bae. Obliterator + hexproof/shroud = big dumb swingy thing/big dumb attack deterrent. Alas, edicts!

My Pet Card is also a Card I Really Want to Work Better: Mycoloth. It's just got so much potential, but unless you're casting it onto a board that can grant your creatures haste and also at the end of your opponents' turns, there are two whole turn cycles to deal with it and board wipes are just too common to justify casting it.

I have a couple of pet cards that immediately spring to mind:

Comeuppance is criminally underplayed, and make people wet their...loincloths if used at the right time.

Overblaze is an one-shot, instant speed Furnace of Rath. This can kill someone out of nowhere.

Krosan Restorer all the way. That card is nuts.

Vein Drinker had always been a favorite of mine, it's got removal, it's got evasion, it even buffs itself! Sadly though, it never manages to live a turn.

Cards I notice myself running whenever I can:

Sun Titan : I am convinced that I make myself a target and this guy helps with that a lot.

Mimic Vat : I cannot think of a reason not to put this in every edh - so that is actually what I am working towards. I put it on the same level as Sol Ring.

Magma Jet : consistency, removal, finisher - in every non-edh deck where it is legal

Evolving Wilds : so much like fetches yet so budget and doesn't hit you for 1

Rogue's Passage : I can't see a reason to no include this in every deck I am allowed to use it in.

Cards I like so much that it makes me look like a bad magic player:

Isochron Scepter : weak to removal and grindy instead of explosive? Yeah but it's just so hilarious! It's funny all over again every new time.

Silence : kind of like an extra turn for - Orim's Chant is even better

Chandra's Phoenix: My first card, and I had one in every red deck I made, along with Chandra, the Firebrand.

June 20, 2016 9:15 p.m.

Lapse of Certainty in non-blue decks is a card I love. Only used for the right spots. For example, Archangel of Thune and Spike Feeder combo, pumping your entire team massively, only to get stumped by a recurring Constant Mists. Well, this stops that and kills that player that turn.

Library of Alexandria. My group has a custom ban list that's tailored more to the pretty insane power level of the decks in our group. It's a nice card that never does anything too nutty.

My favorite deck to use it in is a Tasigur, the Golden Fang good stuff deck I sometimes use. The whole premise for the deck was to toss out all combos and play a recursion heavy, control-based strategy using the best cards in BUG. Using Primeval Titan to grab Cabal Coffers, Urborg, Tomb of Yawgmoth, The Tabernacle at Pendrell Vale, Library of Alexandria, etc. seems nice? Grinding people out with Ugin, the Spirit Dragon? Repeatedly killing and resurrecting your Phantasmal Image copying Kokusho, the Evening Star? Yes sir, sign me up! All in all, it's not even a good deck in my group, but it's one I can whip out to just sit back and play in a manner that I find enjoyable.

I get the best control, creatures, card advantage, tutors, wipes, and so on. Good times. The deck really loves to sit there with 10+ lands and that's really where the Library of Alexandria is at its best.

To comment on a few of the cards that have been already mentioned: Vedalken Orrery could - in theory - be in every deck, and I would not doubt the person who plays it. Comeuppance I put in my fiance's deck and forget it's there; then lose to it. Mimic Vat I want to purchase immediately!

My pet cards start with the land base. When I was getting back into the game I saw the value in lands and traded for them all the time. People would say "but they don't actually win you the game. I'd rather have that creature." But lands help you play that creature consistently

Anywho I'm saying buddy lands. Sulfur Falls, Isolated Chapel, Rootbound Crag, etc. They're so damn useful. I like looking at my opening hand and seeing the curve play out in all colors with no tapped lands etb

You don't really need them in two color; but they're helpful. In 5c you may not run them; in lue of other options. But I strive to have them in all 8 of my decks (one being a newly built 4c in prep for Nov, no mono color)

I would feverishly collect that card if it wasn't so expensive.

By color:

- Silence. I love this card but paired with aforementioned Isochron Scepter it really makes people mad.

- Clairvoyance. This is a gem in the rough imo. Replaces itself and allows you to look at someone's hand and get prepared for what they have in store.

- Hero's Downfall. Creature or PW removal that has never let me down. Deals with those near ult Ugins or Tamiyos.

- Chain Reaction. This card is another that has rarely ever resolved and I was disappointed. Watching Token builds completely cave in on themselves is hilarious.

- Reclaim. A deck without Reclaim, imo, is doing something wrong. This is cheap and effective if no other recursion options are available or your playing a Mono color with little to no options in the first place.

Land- Nykthos, Shrine to Nyx because Devotion and shit!

Of the many pet cards that I have, my favorite is Helm of Possession, cause it's simultaneously powerful, versatile, and repeatable. It gets rid of attackers, it shuts down commander-centric decks, it rattlesnakes, it is a sac outlet, it can Control Magic for the win, and so much more...

I really love Mind Over Matter not only as a finisher with arcanis and lab man but also as a way to go crazy with my mono blue deck. I played the combo with my momir vig deck before and as a combo in a former tasigur build but now it is part of arcanis. Mostly I do not even finish with lab man but instead draw enough to get an infinite Mana combo going and the recycling my graveyard with Reito Lantern and finish with blue sun's zenith and a lot of mana

Noxious Revival is absolutely awesome. Can be paid instant speed for almost nothing and dodges snapcaster mage and so many more or you use it on yourself. Saved my ass a couple of times :D

Time Spiral is a card I will do all in my power to include in as many decks as possible. It's so strong, and usually no one gets salty when it resolves, because it helps them too... But not as much as you. I'm also a big fan of cards like Gamble and Eternal Witness, but they're more like staples rather than pet cards.

In regards to my previous post. Ankle Shanker and Behind the Scenes

June 22, 2016 10:03 p.m.

I have two pet cards. The first is Norwood Priestess. I use her to get any green creature in my hand on to the field. In EDH its good for countering commander hate if it gets sent to my hand, which is a problem in my playgroup.

The second is Karametra's Acolyte for her devotion. I run more green and heavier CMC compared to the rest of my playgroup, so this helps allot in getting creatures out.

June 23, 2016 9:51 p.m.

griffstick says... #36

Norwood Priestess is a great card! More people should play it.

June 23, 2016 10:07 p.m.

Remand and Tidehollow Sculler are my favorites.

As for cards that see zero play that I still like, I have a soft spot for Elusive Krasis.

He just looks so friendly

Archfiend of Depravity because it's such an amazing effect, also it was the foil from my first pre-con, Grave Advantage. I literally try to find an excuse to fit it in every black deck.

Oh and also Snapping Gnarlid because I love GR Landfall (in Standard/Modern) and its design is adorable. Still trying to get a foil one though.

Speaking of Landfall, Evolving Wilds because I'm too poor to afford Fetch Lands. Also helps with mana fixing.

Rapid Hybridization is just the most hilarious removal spell because the Frog-Lizard token is hilarious.

As for white, I guess Athreos, God of Passage, since he has an awesome design. I don't really build any white decks, since I don't have many of the really good white cards.

Bane of Bala Ged is hands-down my favorite Eldrazi, since he is an OP finisher.

A couple of my pet cards are:

Fecundity - don't care that my opponents get to draw. I get to draw more.

Praetor's Counsel - I see your Reclaim/Noxious Revival, and raise you a Counsel! I put this into every green EDH deck I run. Though sometimes I've cast it for as little as a 3-card graveyard, it's usually a blowout.

June 29, 2016 12:32 p.m.

griffstick says... #45

For me Fecundity is that card that always makes it into my deck but never makes the final cut

June 29, 2016 1:07 p.m.

I cant believe it, but I completely forgot about Priest of Titania and Drove of Elves from my EDH deck elf tribal. This two cards I run for the art on it, the effect is good, but it is the art for me.

July 11, 2016 9:15 p.m.

Thespian's Stage - Doesn't matter if my opponents run the good stuff or i do, i need those for... reasons.

Unravel the Aether & Deglamer - because, even outside of f--k your Gods and f--k your Blightsteel Colossus, too!

Krosan Grip - Nuh uh.

Thunderfoot Baloth - just look at it!

Make a Stand, Rootborn Defenses, Eerie Interlude, Ghostway & Faith's Reward - Getting rid of my pesky things? No way, Jose!

Aftershock & Fissure - Who needs burn spells anyway?

Starstorm - Instant speed board wipe with cycling? Oh yeah!

Ravenous Trap - I heard you need your graveyard. Dat's nice, but how about - no.

Ashes to Ashes - Recursion? You wish!

Turnabout - Think of all the possibilities!
