Trouble picking a new commander.

Commander (EDH) forum

Posted on Dec. 28, 2016, 6:38 a.m. by mentor6

I have an Erebos, God of the Dead stax, Zada, Hedron Grinder combo, and Grenzo, Havoc Raiser french deck in my current rotation.

My main problem is that I make decks for more competitive tables.

So I always end up being out of place when I try to just join the "fun" playgroups when I feel like just showing up and playing with whoever.

I also end up building red and black. Whenever I go to start a new deck I either end up up,R,B,Rakdos, or mardu.

Commander's I've looked into so far for a "fun deck"

What sounds fun? What Commander's have been fun to play against? I play stax by trade, so I'm not used to my opponents having fun. Thank you

Just play grouphug, if you want people to have fun

Sidisi has good color access.

Sidisi is very fun if built casually and can compete with the best decks in the format if you decide to that route

Rather than Yasova Dragonclaw you could use Merieke Ri Berit (based around Mind Control style effects and also plenty of untapping mechanics). I guarantee lots of fun will be had but no promises about how much of it will be had by those playing with you. For example (shameless plug):

Sorry for the double post, but I just reread, and if you want your opponents to be having fun, go for a group hug deck. Kynaios and Tiro of Meletis are fun to use, and you can still win games fairly easily by capitalising on your insane number of lands for X-cost burn or X/X creatures.

I would recommend zedruu if anything, you can start gaining massive amounts of life and drawing a lot of cards by slowly handing out useless tokens from cards like Trading Post and Kher Keep. You'll be able to filter through your deck quickly while not appearing to be a major threat, also using cards like Ghostly Prison to prevent your opponents from attacking you. Then, when you feel the time is right, you can start handing out cards like Illusions of Grandeur and Aggressive Mining to every opponent and laugh as you watch them try to recover. It's definitely not a competitive strategy but it's fairly effective and just generally fun to mess around with.

I play Sidisi zombies and it's my most fun deck. I have a couple potential combo wins that I can put together, but just passively when I get the right recursion. My playgroup enjoys it because it's not overwhelmingly powerful, but always a threat. We're about a 75% meta.

The group hug idea sounds fun too. Play things to discourage people from killing you and eventually start throwing

I'm a huge Timmy, and I absolutely love playing Maelstrom Wanderer, but without infinite combos like Tooth and Nail into Kiki-Jiki, Mirror Breaker and Zealous Conscripts. It's my favorite deck by far to play, and hasn't been hated out of any tables I've played in so far.

I used to have a sidisi list and she's tons of fun. If this is going to be your only "fun" deck then I would avoid group hug. It's fun for a couple of games but group hug is boring if that's all your playing against.

I agree with chirz2792. Group hug is pretty lame after the novelty wears off. Perhaps I say this because I am a bastard at heart, who loves terrifying tables and playing 1v3. Play casual zombie tribal Sidisi. She is explosive, but she also allows you to play your game and if you dont like people to plat Opposition locks are kind of fun too. Or you could juat food chain kill the table turn 3 and get a sandwich to better enjoy salty tears

You could also try Prossh, Skyraider of Kher token/Devour. Stuff like Dragonlair Spider/Mycoloth/Ghoulcaller Gisa, Impact Tremors/Purphoros and Zulaport Cutthroat/Grave Pact style "dies" triggers. It's great fun, not super powerful but threatening. Although I would recommend handing out beats in small amounts until you're read to punch one guy out. Otherwise it can make a feel bad moment for one guy.

Sidisi or Gisa & Geralf zombies is a lot of fun and can get overwhelming real quick if people don't have a lot of graveyard hate. I've had a blast with Queen Marchesa as well since the monarchy mechanic leads to some very interesting politics at the table.

I have to say, Sidisi was a fun build when I built a Sultai Reanimator EDH. It was competitive but also fun. The only issue was that...my playgroup plays A LOT of graveyard hate. So the deck ended up being dismantled.
