Theros Gods EDH decks

Commander (EDH) forum

Me and a friend of mine are planning on building EDH decks for the rest of our group because we want to play EDH and they're too lazy to build a deck. We thought that it would be fun if the general for those decks would be somewhat connected so we decided to build an EDH deck for each God of Theros: Heliod, God of the Sun, Thassa, God of the Sea, Erebos, God of the Dead, Purphoros, God of the Forge, and Nylea, God of the Hunt. We are both relatively new EDH and Magic Players so we aren't familiar with some of the older cards so we were wondering if you guys could give some card suggestions. I will post the first drafts of the decks when I have them made.

Or, do you think we should run the Flip Planeswalkers from Origins instead (Kytheon, Hero of Akros  Flip, Jace, Vryn's Prodigy  Flip, Liliana, Heretical Healer  Flip, Chandra, Fire of Kaladesh  Flip, and Nissa, Vastwood Seer  Flip)?

TL;DR: What are some good Mono-Colored EDH cards and would the Gods from Theros or the Flip Planeswalkers from Origins make better commanders?

EDIT: Okay, so since A) you guys said that Purphoros was like stupidly OP, 2) there are only going to be four of us, and 3) I'm just too lazy, I'm deciding not to build a deck for him. Now, I would love any help you guys are willing to offer cutting cards, adding more cards, and balancing the four decks. TYIA!

I believe that the Gods are much better Commander choices. You can build really solid decks around them. You could even venture into the Two-Color Gods later.

Strangely enough, while Red tends to be the weakest color in EDH, I find that Purphoros, God of the Forge is the strongest Mono God Commander.

I'd go with the gods. Archangel of Tithes in Heliod EDH? Shivers

Edhrec.com is good to see what others are playing in each deck.

The Gods are an excellent choice! Your only issue may be how helpful Erebos being in play is for Purphoros. My group attempted this before, setting a budget, and we found not only was Purphoros dealing wicked damage in record time (Especially if there was already an "Impact Tremors" out, maybe even a "Dictate of the Twin Gods"), but Erebos on the field made it tough to repair that damage. The games were always pretty unbalanced.

There would only be four of us so should I not let Purphoros be an option?

I always say to keep all options open.

It really depends on how you are each choosing your Commander. Random draw Commanders is fun, or draw numbers then roll for it, etc.

If each of you have a favorite color in Magic and each is different, that will work.

The big thing is, whomever gets Purphoros may not build their deck in a broken manner.

I just believe he has the potential to be strongest of all 5. It depends on how they are built. Each person should get their Commander, however you decide, and then build their decks. It will be a good exercise in deck building and modifying a deck later.

Really depends on the how the decks turn out. Since you have control over each of the decks you can tune him to be about the same power as the others. If anyone is ever going to be tuning the decks for power instead of for even games then you may want to exclude him.

Do you have a per card or entire deck budget you want to work within? there are a lot of good mono color cards, but some are pretty pricy.

There isn't a budget because we'll be playing on untap.in.

Well that makes it awkward with Purphoros. Your friends will be able to tune their decks and without doing straight good stuff he is by far the best.

A short list of must runs in mono-color EDH would have to include:

Rhystic Study

Cyclonic Rift

Cabal Coffers

Urborg, Tomb of Yawgmoth

Natural Order

Gaea's Cradle

You will also want any tutor for 3 mana or less that grabs something relevant in your deck.

I'm not sure if I forgot to put this or not but I'm going to be building all of the decks because my friends don't have the time or really want to. I figured this way I could try to get them excited about EDH so they would start to brew their own decks and/or at least tweak the God they used.
