The oathbreaker commander ideas forum

Commander (EDH) forum

Post your idea(s) for an oathbreaker commander/spell pairing here!

Oathbreaker was recently talked about on the Command Zone podcast. It is a 60 card commander variant in which your commander has to be a planswalker and you get a "signature spell" within the color identity of your commander. The spell can only be cast when your commander is in play and is subject to commander tax. Starting life is 20. There is a banlist separate from the edh banlist.

It is here: https://weirdcards.org/oathbreaker-ban-list

Teferi, Time Raveler and some busted sorcery? Maybe Treasure Cruise but that seems boring. Suggestions?

Narset, Parter of Veils + Windfall for full meanness.

Ugin, the Ineffable + All Is Dust

Saheeli, Sublime Artificer + Seething Song = burst of servos.

Dack Fayden and some tutor like Intuition to fetch pieces of Kiki-Combo.

I feel like tutors would need to be at least banned from being the signature spell because really what would be stopping someone from just using Teferi, Time Raveler and any blue searcher like Merchant Scroll or Mystical Tutor .

Although Sol Ring , Mana Crypt , and Mana Vault being on the banned list for this game mode would be pretty interesting for gameplay since people wouldn’t accelerate into their late game plays as fast as they normally would. But this could be viewed as a negative since green decks will still ramp so much so hey are hardly effected by this.

I have 2 built already. I have,

Kiora, the Crashing Wave and Fog , it's a deck that tries to get her emblem out to win. Here's the deck for your viewing pleasure click here.

Daretti, Ingenious Iconoclast and Slaughter Games it's a combo killer deck, it wins through grinding out a game and melting them. If I'm up against no blue decks I switch to Sadistic Sacrament and if I'm against no combo decks I switch to Rakdos Charm . Here's the deck for your viewing pleasure click here too.

I made a list too...

It wins turn 3?

Saheeli, Sublime Artificer and Thoughtcast

It is really gross. So far it goldfished 3 turn 1 wins in 40 playtests, and since no specific card other than the Oathbreaker and Signature Spell are required, running many winconditions not even Extract effects affect the list much.

Yea someone pointed out that synergy to me the other day. It looks like its to powerful to beat by any means. That might be the best one. Like the tier 1 of oathbreaker SynergyBuild. Tag me on the list I want to share it to my competitive players. They dreamed it up but never built it. Also do you have any that dont win so quick.

Nah, best deck so far was an Esper Control variant using Aminatou, the Fateshifter , a lot for colors, but it has some good synergies. Approach of the Second Sun is the Signature Spell and win condition.

You use Pithing Needle and Sorcerous Spyglass as walker hate, and Aminatou can flicker it to name a new walker need be, or with Spyglass to see a new hand. The list runs other walker hate like Suppression Field too because Aminatou isn't super necessary.

Spellseeker , Baleful Strix , and a few other creatures show in the list ( Snapcaster Mage , etc.) with Aminatou can be pure value, but Vampiric Tutor style effects with Aminatou's +1 can get us the answers we need when we need them, and with a toolbox of the best control spells from Terminus (Aminatou synergy, and synergy with our tutors to top), Toxic Deluge , and Supreme Verdict for sweepers, Liliana's Triumph , Grasp of Fate (Aminatou synergy), and all of the other most efficient 3 for ones in multiplayer are showcased as well.

Does it seem to be the best deck? I can't find any lists that have a higher win rate.

The other contenders are Saheeli (Sublime Artificer)/Thoughtcast, with tons of artifact-storm cards.

New Jace/ Stroke of Genius , with Dramatic Reversal / Isochron Scepter and other infinite mana combos, playing some control-combo deck that uses its cards for value until it hits an infinite mana combo and wins.

Liliana of the Veil / Liliana's Triumph is a list I find pretty insane, it runs Smallpox , Pox , Chains of Mephistopheles , etc. for a fast and brutal mono-black list. Variants I have seen run Pox, Vamp Tutor, Demonic Tutor, and Smallpox as the Signature spell too, but one-sided Smallpox that doesn't hit life or lands, but is an instant seems the best so far.

Otherwise, Ob Nixilis, the Hate-Twisted / Dark Deal seems fun.

Want more fun?

Tibalt, the Fiend-Blooded and Gamble , using gamble to set up rituals, and tibalt to discard and dig for more, until you find Empty the Warrens (wincon) and even if you discard it, you then fetch Past in Flames , cast it or flash it back if you discarded it, spam through your rituals, then cast or flashback Empty and win with 50 tokens.

Seems fun!

That's what I was wondering if they are online somewhere.

SynergyBuild says... #21

Oh, I can right up the lists, which ones do you want?

May 8, 2019 7:29 p.m.

SynergyBuild: how can approach be the wincon? It has to be cast from your hand to win the game.

I'm currently pondering some lists.

Huatli, the Sun's Heart + Wave of Reckoning seems funfair.

Nissa, Who Shakes the World + Sylvan Awakening . Might be nice.

Perhaps if you went with a commander that has W/U in their color combination, you could use something like Narset's Reversal to bounce Approach of the Second Sun back into your hand as you cast it. After all, it never specifies that the first cast must also be from the hand as well, and it doesn't care if the spell was technically cast twice already before. In theory, I think that would work. Still kind of a tricky thing to work around, but then blue is a good color to tutor things.

Or just play Mystical Tutor and tutor for approach and have additional utility.

Rule 9 of the format: If your Oathbreaker’s signature spell would go to any zone other than the command zone or the stack, then it instead goes to the command zone. This takes precedence over other replacement effects such as buyback.

No, I messed up, I thought I already said that tho... weird my comment didn't get posted.

Been testing out Demonic Tutor in it's place.

CrimsonChaos says... #27

Hm, so the signature spell doesn't give you the choice of whether or not to return it to the command zone after use, like a regular commander would if it left the field? That's different...

Pervavita says... #28

I suspect it's due to spells with Flashback or other repeatable ways to cast the spells for cheap when the tax is too high.

Well if we are going for the absolute monster mash of fun and degenerate we pair up Jace, Wielder of Mysteries with Paradigm Shift for exquisite amounts of chaos. It is an easy format to break holes into but there are also a lot of ways to shore them up and so far the ban list is pretty solid. If anyone is interested in deck ideas there is a thread floating in here for them with a small amount. cough mine On Tilts cough cough

Ral, Storm Conduit and Fated Infatuation for a more casual deck that can still combo off if provided enough time. Run Mirrorwing Dragon, Zada, Hedron Grinder and Docent of Perfection  Flip to combo with infinite wizards. Not the most original but it won't combo off turn 3 or 4 like Expansion / Explosion .

What about Tezzeret, Master of Metal and Vicious Rumors . Then use Citanul Flute , Duskmantle Guildmage , and Mindcrank for an amazing infinite mill deck.

not sure how well this would work, but use infinite mana with Axebane Guardian , Freed from the Real and any other wall.

then use Time Warp as your spell. you could add some Biovisionary as well

I’ve enjoyed playing Nissa, who shakes the world and genesis wave. If you’re not looking to get too competitive and have a casual play group, this combo is perfect. Especially for all you Timmy players out there. Add in a nykthos, shrine to nyx to soak up all that green devotion. Then, add an Akromas memorial and go to town.

So I’ve been using Tibalt, the Fiend-Blooded with either Repeated Reverberation or Shreds of Sanity. Reverberation is really, really fun with Tibalt’s -4 ability. If I go first I can drop in on T4 and hit my opponent for 12-15 damage, or for lethal if I time it after a wheel effect, but I’ve been trying other things because I feel I depend too much on that combo when it’s my signature spell.

Shreds of Sanity allows me to fix my hand after Tibalt’s random discards, and set up a controlled discard to play off any of the madness cards I use. Alternatively, his ultimate can be used by T5-6 and everyone seems to forget that it’s Insurrection!

Anyway, games with the deck are fun, and challenging to pilot due to his random discard effect, but I’ve had nothing but a blast playing him. A lot of the deck is GY utility, such as Flashback/Madness to make the most out of the discards, but I also have some Gamble effects, along with Risk Factor/Browbeat/Throes of Chaos to go a little vorthos with Tibalt’s persona.
