The new commanders

Commander (EDH) forum

So whats everyones thoughts on the new commanders(4 color and the ones that pair). my play group is all thinking Atraxa will be possibly strong as hell, Breya looks okay i guess and saskia looks like she will be maybe okay i could see damage being stupid with a few combat phases double strike maybe a double damage effect

Shane.Allen says... #2

Breya, the Etherium Shaper is as of so far the most broken, and will be easy to become high tier.

1, Its very easy I commander to make infinite mana.

2, Its very easy in commander to make infinite artifact tokens with said infinite mana and other such combos.

3, Her ability is a pay ability with not tap effects so with said mana and artifacts you can gain infinite life and kill all other opponents.

I don't see the others being that easy to abuse. I think Saskia will see play in 1 vs 1 play in dual commander.

I don't usually fanboy this hard for something new, like I did for Original Innistrad, but this release has me almost drooling.

Here's my thoughts on the commanders we have already:

I'm so tired of this atraxa hype, I mean it's a good commander and definitely synergies with super friends but it's really just a decent card. The hype for Breya is understandable though, she might be pretty garbage in a casual build but the combos you can accomplish with her make her a very viable commander.

Atraxa deserves her hype, yes she is superfriends, however, her real competitive nature will be infect, she will destroy people at a rapid pace, but that being said Breya is my favorite

What Shane.Allen said. Seriously you guys, Atraxa is cool and intimidating in a more casual setting (at least tier 2) but the real winner here is Breya. Competitive edh decks have very little trouble generating infinite mana, she'll be tier 1, if not 1.5

Sasika is becoming my new favorite. Just fantasizing about how to murder opponents with her feels good.

The only card stopping her now is the RGUB primary. If he's as good as I think he is, then William Wallace's daughter...I mean Sasika has got a new rival.

I would like someone to explain the Breya, Etherium Shaper hype beyond "ZOMG infinites". She doesn't help locate other pieces and only functions if you are already producing infinite mana and artifacts. Every infinite artifact loop I know of already wins without her the turn after combo activation at the latest. Adding a 4 mana card and delaying combo activation by a turn to accelerate the kill to the combo turn is a net wash in speed by adding a card.

She doesn't even function in a 'lark loop to make her own artifacts because her power is too high. So you would need Reveillark, Karmic Guide, and Body Double to have her make her own artifacts. At that point you just drop her and body double and do a Blasting Station loop.

That is my assessment at least. Someone please tell me what possible combo there is that I seem to be missing.

Phaetion, Sasika is a female.

McKz: The "He" I was referring to was the RGUB legend, Yidris.

"murder opponents with her"

"William Wallace's daughter"

They seems to know this.

Yeah I'm with Gidgetimer on this one. She functions as a dump when you already have another combo out and she can help with board control a bit, but I don't really understand what she adds that an esper artifact deck couldn't already do.

Speaking from a cEDH standpoint, Atraxa is the best so far. Cheap CMC and an almost immediate effect, she's going to be a top tier Stax commander. There will probably be a couple infect variants, but most likely she'll win with some kind of infinite combo post-lockout. Her colors make that much easy.

Breya looks fine for more casual settings. Requiring both infinite mana AND infinite artifacts to kill will keep her out of cEDH, but she's fine for how 99% of players play EDH. She's tech. Not an engine or a wincon, but she does stuff.

Saskia is pretty underwhelming. Low tier kitchen table turn em sideways EDH. Nothing wrong with that, but not inherently powerful. She'll be played with Mayael and Kaalia and the like.

Can't say anything about the partner commanders until the UW one is spoiled, but Kydele is by far the strongest one spoiled thus far.

Someone please explain the atraxa infect idea to me. I've seen so many attempted at infect decks in edh and they all fell incredibly short, once you've killed one person you've usually used all your resources. In addition, no one likes infect so you'll usually be a target and you have to single handedly kill everyone with infect since the damage everyone else is doing to each other doesn't help you at all. I fail to see how proliferate helps at all to make up for how bad infect is in edh.

So I think I am the only one that is really excited for Reyhan, Last of the Abzan.

I don't see anyone else talking about her. Even by herself she fulfills my desire for a Golgari Counters decks that has the long game in mind. The biggest problem with counters decks is that you lose them rather often when creatures bite it. She helps keep the love going where Skullbriar, the Walking Grave only ever helped himself.

Pair her with someone else and things get interesting. Bruse Tarl, Boorish Herder would ensure that all those counters turn into even bigger damage. Ishai, Ojutai Dragonspeaker gives us access to blue and simic counter nonsense. I see so many fun possibilities!!

I think the hype around Breya is because she provides a win condition with Deadeye Navigator + Palinchron. And you still have access to Eldrazi Displacer and Peregrine Drake as backup.

While there are a lot of decks that use this loop, there aren't many where the commander actually provides the win condition as the mana sink. Breya however is one of those.

I'm on board the Atraxa hype train, simply because I love Phyrexia and I love 4/4 beatsticks. I want to use her as support for a control deck (yes, with walkers.) I think she could be a great finisher and give help to things like Helix Pinnacle. Deathtouch vigilance lifelink on a 4/4 flyer for four is nothing to scoff at.

October 27, 2016 12:13 p.m.

Dredge4life says... #25

Maybe the Breya hype is she can sac herself, and go infinite with infinite mana? Otherwise I don't know.

October 27, 2016 12:21 p.m.

Gidgetimer says... #26

Many of the infinite mana combos are infinite colorless, i know that some infinite colored mana combos exist, but they are less common and the major one was already mentioned. One of my friends also pointed out that it makes Animate Dead + Worldgorger Dragon into an actual wincon instead of a forced draw. I'm still not onboard with the hype but I better understand it now.

Yidris, Maelstrom Weaver: Cheat out things? I'm down. Seems like a fun commander to build around.

Saskia the Unyielding: This is ok. Findng a way to either switch targets easier, or target more player with her ability would make is easy to everyone down with one big beater. Might look in to building her in the future.

Kynaios and Tiro of Meletis: I like them. I've only brewed one group hug deck that focused on giving opponents creatures to fight each other with. I think I could find a way to do a different kind of group hug. Also making a deck named the Gay Agenda is to good to pass up.

Atraxa, Praetors' Voice: I like counter themes, so I'm a big fan. Will probably do a +1/+1 counter theme for her.

Breya, Etherium Shaper: Artifact theme? A Combo commander? Not green? All the things that I'm not that interested in. She is probabl the commnder i dislike the most.
