Suggestions for a first deck for a friend

Commander (EDH) forum

Hello everyone, a friend of mine decided to give mtg a try and since in our playgroup we basically play only commander he asked me some suggestions for his deck. He likes big creatures and a straightforward strategy. The deck also has to be a on a budget since he would like to improve it gradually. My first suggestions were Gishath, Sun's Avatar, Atla Palani, Nest Tender and Nikya of the Old Ways.

Do you have any other suggestions?

Honestly one you might consider is Xenagos, God of Revels. My mom started with that and honestly its not a hard deck to build with a straight forward aggressive strategy.

I'll suggest Goreclaw, Terror of Qal Sisma.

Upsides: - mono-G, so great ramp and a cheap mana base

  • can basically play any fatty and thus can be build super-cheap, while having lots of space for upgrades.

  • very Timmy in nature

Downsides:

  • doesn't have acces to some of the more splashy fatties.

The Mimeoplasm is what got me into EDH and might be fun for him.

I second Xenagos, God of Revels. He fits the stompy archetype, is hard to remove, making him easier to drop without worrying about Wraths, and I think 2-color decks are the easiest for beginners to play, since the fixing is easy and you don't have to stretch into weird color-bending cards to cover weaknesses. I think he's also much easier to upgrade or rebuild, since he's not so niche like a tribal deck.

I think you should give him a Mizzix of the Izmagnus storm deck! ... cricket noises ...

Anyway, actually, give him a deck that pumps up its creatures- equipment is less feelsbad than auras if it doesn't work but also more likely to pop off. In my experience with new players, smashing with a big creature is awesome, and if they get other things when they attack (with cards like Sword of the Animist or Bear Umbra), it feels very satisfying. It just feels cool to dictate your play and be like "when I attack, this happens and this happens and my creature is a billion/a billion! Chump block or die!!!"

To that end, I recommend Nazahn, Revered Bladesmith, Kestia, the Cultivator, Tana, the Bloodsower (probably with Akiri, Line-Slinger or Bruse Tarl, Boorish Herder).

Or, if your player is more oriented toward getting that sweet, sweet value than having massive creatures, the Otrimi, the Ever-Playful precon looks fine. That way the player can also do some upgrading if they wanna.

Kruphix, God of Horizons is very open ended as to what style you want to push the deck. Plus the obvious benefits from green and blue.

Ezuri, Renegade Leader makes your creatures giant and is scary fast.

Ruric Thar is pretty straight forward and should be heavily creature focused. Plus can be very budget with lots of room for upgrading.

So here are the suggestions thus far:

From yourself, Gishath, Sun's Avatar, Atla Palani, Nest Tender, and Nikya of the Old Ways.

dbpunk suggested Xenagos, God of Revels (with another vote from triproberts12.

seshiro_of_the_orochi suggested Goreclaw, Terror of Qal Sisma.

Vimozahr flew in with a host of suggestions: Selvala, Heart of the Wilds, one or more Naya Dino Commanders, The Ur-Dragon, the C13 Naya Commanders (Mayael the Anima, Gahiji, Honored One, and Marath, Will of the Wild), any number of colorless Eldrazi commanders, and Ruric Thar, the Unbowed.

I suggested Nazahn, Revered Bladesmith, Kestia, the Cultivator, Tana, the Bloodsower with either Akiri, Line-Slinger or Bruse Tarl, Boorish Herder, or Otrimi, the Ever-Playful.

Brutal_B suggested Kruphix, God of Horizons.

And, finally, GoblinElectromancer swoops in with Ezuri, Renegade Leader.

Not posting to provide opinions, this is just the ones in consideration.
