Single Color EDH

Commander (EDH) forum

Would a single color commander be any good in EDH or should you always have a multicolored commander? I am new to the format and I want to try to build an EDH deck and I have been wondering how good Jaya Ballard would be?!

Thanks for your help!

Many EDH decks revolve around a single color (given, it is usually blue). What matters is that you are able to build a cohesive deck with whoever your choose. They should be utilitarian enough to allow you to do what you want to do, but your deck should also not be completely reliant upon them for victory.

I think Jaya could work, but there might be better choices out there. I am not very well-versed in red legends, but you could do a Gatherer search for them and see what you have to work with. If you don't like any of them after testing, you can try something else.

Single colour EDH decks are just as valid, just as powerful and just as fun as any multi-coloured deck. They are much easier to build, especially since you don't have to delve into the world of multi-colour-producing nonbasic lands. Jaya Ballard, Task Mage would make a fine general, considering all the fun and useful things she can do. The only other red legends I could really recommend would be Urabrask the Hidden , Ashling the Pilgrim or Godo, Bandit Warlord

Considering how new to the format You sound, you might Wanna wait until wizards releases these commander decks. Essentially they are prebuilt 99 card EDH decks plus a general. So if you feel uncertain about you might just wanna wait and then tweak from there. Just an idea.

Seeing as blue and red have been advertised, it is my duty as a black player to sell Mono-Black generals for EDH Inspiration! Try powerhouses like Drana, Kalastria Bloodchief or Maga, Traitor to Mortals for a strong beatdown EDH deck, Ashling, the Extinguisher , card:Kiku, Night's Flower or Kalitas, Bloodchief of Ghet for creature control or even Maralen of the Mornsong or Seizan, Perverter of Truth for some silly combos and quandaries!

Hi Keneke,

As said before mono colored Commander decks can be just as good as multi colored ones.Usually blue is the most powerfull (and least fun for everyone else imho ;))Then Black, Green, White and Red.My playgroup thinks mon red is the hardest to build. Try to get some artifacts to manaramp because that will be hard in Red.I myself have mono Black, white and green decks and they all do oke in our multiplayer games.

Good luck with building!

Oh and the Commanderdeck release tip is a good one!

Want a hard mono-red deck to build for EDH? I'm currently working on one for Norin the Wary . Burn and token-generation is going to end up being the bulk of it, I haven't put much work into it yet though. Goblins with a human leader. Norin is called the God of Shenanigans by me for a reason, lol.

For multicolored, I can't wait for the Commander deck. The G/B/W one looks nice. Hi, I'm a legendary FUNGUS!!!

I built a fairly beastly mono green deck myself. It can be done but like with most decks you need to know the goal of the deck before you build it.

Yes, mono red is truly the hardest to build. The best 5 are:

1.) Kiki-Jiki, Mirror Breaker

2.) Urabrask the Hidden

3.) Ib Halfheart, Goblin Tactician

4.) Godo, Bandit Warlord

5.) Ryusei, the Falling Star

Heartless Hidetsugu can actually kill everyone with Furnace of Rath ! Lovisa Coldeyes seems good, too.

However, mono color EDH IS viable as everyone here has indicated. I personally own a Drana, Kalastria Bloodchief and a Kemba, Kha Regent deck.

Hell, your General doesn't even have to have a color at all! Kozilek, butcher of asses., for example.

Nice I have been thinking about building a deck around Omnath, Locus of Mana for example

October 4, 2011 2:44 p.m.

Hm. Never considered that. It could get pretty ridiculous. God knows a mono-green deck could generate a shit-ton of mana. Throw some X-spells in there, and you got a pretty good deck going!

My thoughts exactly!!

Thanks

Oh good lord, Omnath. He's quite ridiculous. I recommend Bear Umbra , and just about every single possible thing to make your lands tap for more than one green. Also, Primeval Titan is amazing in that. Proceed to give Omnath trample and win. Spearbreaker Behemoth is often a good thing to have, as well as Loxodon Warhammer . Such amazing ways to buff Omnath.

"Alright, beginning attack step. I'm gonna pay 1 to make Omnath indestructible. I'm gonna tap all my lands and dump an extra 30 mana into what's already there, making him about a 45/42 trample lifelink. And you have... how much blocking power?"

October 4, 2011 7:25 p.m.

Sakiko, Mother of Summer is my number one suggestion if you plan on building that deck. Think about it.

October 4, 2011 7:45 p.m.

Oh good lord. I think you just everything, good sir.

Omnath attacking alone would double your mana, every single attack phase. Not including land, or any other source of mana. Omnath and the silly lady Murderauder mentioned will be an exponential increase.

Oh yeah. Something else for Omnath to play with. Helix Pinnacle . Easiest win condition for him besides general damage, by far.

October 4, 2011 7:47 p.m.

Also, Doubling Cube WHAT WHAT.

For reals, though, there are just so many good cards for Omnath. I don't want you to feel pressured, so I won't list them all here unless requested.

awesome thoughts guys...i thought it would be awesome but seeing all this just makes me excited...feel free to throw more ideas out there. I am taking notes as well as looking through my binders for cards. I was thinking Primeval as well and that Sakiko just looks ridiculous!

October 4, 2011 8:31 p.m.

Well, here goes.

Caged Sun , Gauntlet of Power , Keeper of Progenitus , Vorinclex, Voice of Hunger , Heartbeat of Spring , Vernal Bloom .

card:Gaea's Cradle, Rofellos, Llanowar Emissary , and card:Sasaya's Essence (although the latter can be really hard to flip).

The really great ones are Sakiko, Mother of Summer , Mana Reflection , and Doubling Cube .

Other spells that love ramp are things like New Frontiers , Genesis Wave , and basically any X-spell in green. Hydras and the like. Also any big fatties. Things like Blightsteel Colossus and the Eldrazi Titans (Although remember, Emrakul is banned in EDH).

This is all kinda just off the top of my head, but I think I hit all or most of the major players.

Tribal elves also gives you more mana than you will ever need, if you choose to go that route.

Also, every single card in the game that gives shroud or hexproof. Omnath needs to be protected. If he dies when it's not your turn, you'll lose a lot of mana if you don't have a mana sink, or a way to cast him at instant speed.
