Ob nixilias... Pretty OP?

Commander (EDH) forum

So, the new Ob Nixilis, Unshackled is like pretty good in EDH. Actually, its REALLY good. With EDH being a format all about searching the library, ramping big, and in some decks, searching for the rite combo pieces, I feel lose ten and sac a dude just to search is pretty OP IMO. Tbh, I feel it may get banned... Maybe, probably not, just throwing my opinion out there.

Thoughts?

I don't want to be debby downer, but dies to Doomblade. Which is to say, decks that care about him will just kill him. Although in Ghave, Guru of Spores he would be an insane beater.

Uh... Unless im missing something Gidgetimer, it doesn't die to Doom Blade , lol

But I understand what you mean.

Fine, he dies to the dreaded Painter's Servant /Doom Blade combo. (I know Servant is banned, leave me alone its late. :P )

Gidgetimer: still doesn't die to doom blade. servant makes it the chosen color IN ADDITION to its other colors...meaning he is still black.

now that ive got that out of the way, I would just like to say that I agree, new ob nixy is pretty beast. I like him in my Thraximundar deck. he would also be pretty sweet with Shattergang Brothers while running the twin force ramp card. shared exploration or something like that. and other cards that would normally allow your opponent to search their library

Hey CommanderOfBolas... I play Shattergang Brothers in EDH, what are the chances :P

Ya, I use him in my Super Combo Shattergang Brothers deck and there is nothing better than my opponent about to search and then I Chord of Calling fetching On nixi in response.... Such value, such wow!

I'm considering running him as a general. Are there any black or colorless cards that force a tutor onto a opponent?

Eek! I dunno about that phc, those kinds of things are hard to come by

Ghost Quarter basically becomes a Strip Mine , which is pretty cool. maybe just do lots of things like that. find cards that are typically weak because of their bonuses that they give to the opponent, and make them a ton better. I cant think of the other effects like that off the top of my head, but they are definitely out there

Doesn't die to Doom Blade ...or any kill spell for that matter if your commander is Marchesa, the Black Rose

Ok so I picked one of the worst possible kill spells as my example last night. My point though was that there are ways to deal with Ob Nixilis, Unshackled , to the point that there would be no reason to even consider banning him. There are cards that are much more powerful that aren't banned (Jace, the Mind Sculptor is the first one that comes to mind)

I don't think he's overpowered. I'd like to see a lot less tutoring, myself. It's a shame Stranglehold shot up so much in price.

You could run him as the Commander and flash him with Vedalken Orrery when someone tutors (I so want to do this in response to a Tempt with Discovery :D)

The thing is, there are very few cards that force one's opponent to search their library, so you kinda have to rely on them searching it themselves. Red, white and blue don't do too much searching, all things considered. Black does a lot of tutoring, but most of it is done several turns before Ob comes into play, on top of the fact that they've got the most spot creature removal in their color. Green searches a lot, because of ramp, but they've got very few creature spot removal options, though even those mostly hit Ob (because he's got flying). So, he's a good card, and in a tutor- or ramp-heavy meta, he'd be pretty sick, but it's pretty easy to play around.

Compare him to the last legend that was banned Griselbrand . Ob nixilis wont get a ban....

Now, his abilities are strong, and most strong decks do lot of tutoring for consistency. But i also see alot of casual deck having next to nothing when it comes to tutor.

Also, these competitive decks that it affect the most tend to have alot of wrath effect cards. At most, i see ob nixilis triggering once or twice before it dies.

In my opinion, it isn't the Stranglehold type ability that makes him OP. In the right sacrifice shell, it will become a HUGE trample flyer the second it hit the table, terrifying.
