Commander (EDH) forum

I'm really stoked to have gotten a Surrak Dragonclaw as my promo. i'm going to name him commander of my simic big'n'stompy deck and re-work the whole thing. the two guilds i have the most fun playing are u/g and u/r, so i'm gonna have a ton of fun being able to play whatever i want counter free (for as long as he lasts), and letting him turn fun jank giants into trampling uncounterable badasses. i've never really messed around with g/r but i'm sure it'll be a fun build. anyone planning on making a new edh deck with one of the khans legendary's, or making one of them the new commander of something you've already built?

i'm particularly looking forward to trying out Temur Ascendancy as a way to help keep my hand full as i dump out creatures. especially if i also have a Prophet of Kruphix out.

Yeah, I'm working on a Sidisi, Brood Tyrant , I pre-ordered her cause I wanted to try a BUG themed edh that wasn't helmed by The Mimeoplasm or Damia, Sage of Stone . She isn't as innately powerful as those two imo, but she is a really good enabler of graveyard shenanigans and her zombies can be solid blockers or an end game horde. I'm looking forward to using Sultai Ascendancy to fill my graveyard and to getting value out of my older flashback and unearth cards that have just been collecting dust in my binder.

Good luck with your Surrak build, he looks like a real bear for control to play against.

I got the Narset promo, and I'm gonna have her run a UWR tokens build. I really want to build around each khan at some point. I find the least interesting for me is Surrak, but that's really because I have a Xenagos, God of Revels deck already that is a similar concept.

For edh, I think this is a list from the best to the worst of the Khans:
1- Narset
2- Surrak
3- Sidisi
4- Zurgo
5- Anafenza

I was going to put together a voltron/ goblin tribal with Zurgo as the commander. Now I am thinking of going with more of a +1/+1 counters themed deck, with some of the outlast creatures, and the Contagion Engine /Contagion Clasp . I will toss in some unleash, undying, and Innistrad vampires too.

I'm currently working on a Sidisi zombies deck, and I'm actually excited to try to make Anafenza viable too. I think Anafenza is the least innately powerful khan for EDH, but I want to see if she works well to make other underrated creatures more powerful.

My first reaction when I started to see the Abzan cards spoiled, outside of the crazy decks you could build around Narset, Enlightened Master , was how much fuel just appeared for a Ghave, Guru of Spores deck. The existence of Ghave is probably the reason that Anafenza has to be considered one of the worst, if not the worst, Khan to have as a commander. Ghave just has stupid synergy with the Abzan cards.

I made a Sidisi, Brood Tyrant self mill/zombie tribal themed deck that is a lot of fun on my profile. I still need to edit the deck and pick up the Sultai cards I didn't get at prerelease. Did pull Sidisi at prerelease so I can finally unproxy her. Now I need her in foil.

Probably won't run Villainous Wealth just for how stupid it can be... aaaaaaaaand I'll play your entire library.

I think Sidisi can hold her own as a commander. She has her own deck style different than The Mimeoplasm (more powerful Body Double ) and Damia, Sage of Stone (ramp into counterspells). I like Sidisi and Narset in that they are different than the commanders before them.

Surrak and Anafenza, however, are similar to previous (and more powerful) commanders being Animar, Soul of Elements and Ghave, Guru of Spores . They seem better in the 99 than as a commander because the play styles are just too similar, they're essentially the same deck (maybe an exception for Anafenza, I image playing tokens with her might be difficult).

Surrak Dragonclaw is too much of a good thing to avoid. I have always had an affinity for creature decks, and the idea of playing them in an anti-control deck has always been something I tried to accomplish one way or another. Now I have it built in to the commander, with access to mass trample from the same source.

If it wasn't for that hint of blue on him, I would argue Surrak Dragonclaw is my spirit general.

Haunted Crossroads + Sidisi, Brood Tyrant = 3x 2/2 Zombie tokens every turn.

Other "return cards from your Graveyard to your Library" effects that would work well:
Unholy Grotto
Hua Tuo, Honored Physician
Volrath's Stronghold
Gravepurge
Footbottom Feast
Academy Ruins (With an Artifact Creature)

@Rayenous

The Haunted Crossroads combo doesn't work like you think it does. Sidisi, Brood Tyrant can only get 1 zombie per instance of milling. That means if 3 creatures go to the graveyard at the same time, you only get 1 zombie from that.

Sidisi, Brood Tyrant seems less good now, unless your deck it tricked out for graveyard shenanigans.

Sidisi's still pretty badass. Combo her with, say, Undead Alchemist and Havengul Runebinder , not to mention the zombie buffing Lord of the Undead , Diregraf Captain , Death Baron , Undead Warchief , and/or Cemetery Reaper , and you've got a pretty scary deck.
