Need some general suggestions

Commander (EDH) forum

Posted on Dec. 17, 2014, 11:26 p.m. by dbpunk

I gave myself a challenge: design an edh deck for each color combination other than 4 color, 5 color and colorless and 2 for each mono colored. So far the ones I'm missing are a second mono-black, second mono-white, Golgari, Simic, Selesnya, Bant, Mardu and Naya. I was hoping for some suggestions on generals in those colors.

Note: I'm looking for interesting generals that can be played in an not quite straight forward way. I like using tricks, and will gladly use generals that haven't been used too much. Any ideas?

It would help if you listed the ones you've already used.

Oh and I almost forgot: they should be fairly cheap (no $30 cards please), a 7 Clc or under so I can recast them and not a 100% straight forward general. Please help!

I edited your post to make it clearer which ones you were missing. I hope you don't mind.

Well, let's start with the three-color combinations, because there are fewer to choose from:

Mardu: Zurgo Helmsmasher does funny things with board wipes, but he's relatively new, so he's probably pretty popular. Maybe try Oros, the Avenger, and do some tricksy things with cards like Stuffy Doll and damage doublers?

Bant: Rubinia Soulsinger, steal all the things? Or, if you're feeling the-opposite-of-Spike, Phelddagrif group hug.

Naya: Marath, Will of the Wild can do freakin' anything in her colors. Gives you a lot of options on how to build her.

Oh no that's fine. Its all good. I actually can tell I didn't format things well earlier.

Honestly I thought about Zurgo Helmsmasher as a very straightforward commander, so I can see a lot of people doing similar things. As for Oros, the Avenger? I can see myself figuring some funny tricks to that.

Rubinia Soulsinger is a little weak, since her ability doesn't involve her being able to do anything other than having control then giving it back. But I didnt consider Phelddagrif yet. I'm thinking he'd be hella fun to use.

Finally Marath, Will of the Wild sounds like my best choice for Naya by far. Thanks!

Michiko Konda seems a little weak since her ability involves me taking damage.

Kuon, Ogre Ascendant sounds interesting. He's officially on my list now.

Nath of the Gilt-Leaf he sounds less overused than most Golgari commanders (namely Savra, Queen of the Golgari and Jarad, Golgari Lich Lord) but it's still like the deck would be very narrow strategy options.

My friend actually runs a Momir Vig, Simic Visionary deck. And although it's a great deck, it's very singular in its strategy.

Gaddock Teeg sounds like a fun general to piss my friends off with. Plus his restrictions really can screw control and burn decks.

Roon of the Hidden Realm honestly has a lot of options. Personally I think a Pheldagriff deck might be more fun though.

Tariel the Reckoner is a expensive card. Like I love her ability, and id run lots of exile spells and kill spells and make the deck about selecting what goes in their grave, but shes too costly. Otherwise I'd go for it.

Gahiji, Honored One meeeehhh it's pretty good for commander of I plan to do aggro. But I'm already set on Marath, Will of the Wild though. I built a hydra/ burn deck around it. Not quite done tweaking it though.

Glad I could help. What colors do you have peft to choose then? For a different white one you could go Brigid, Hero of Kinsbaile and have a bunch of deathtouch artifacts so she can straight up Murder anything that takes part in a combat

December 18, 2014 2:40 p.m.

dbpunk says... #12

Oooh that actually sounds interesting. And everything except another monoblack, another monowhite, Simic, Selesnya Golgari, Bant and Mardu have been used.

December 18, 2014 3:07 p.m.

Vorel of the Hull Clade is a fun simic commander. Akroma, Angel of Wrath is also really fun

December 18, 2014 3:55 p.m.

dbpunk says... #14

I might go with Vorel actually. And Akroma's mana cost isn't really a good selling point. Also I think I'm gonna do a weenie field wipe deck with Brigid, Hero of Kinsbaile

Momir Vig, Simic Visionary and Captain Sisay and other permanent tutorers are problematic for me because it makes it so that I just follow the same things all the time. Rafiq of the Many is definitely an option, but I might focus less on giving exalted triggers and more on his colors in terms of playing him (hint: total lockdown tactics with lots of tricks to stop people from blocking him rather than making him huge. Think stall deck). As for Sisters of Stone Death I honestly don't wanna use an 8 drop general since it would be hard potentially to recast. Finally as for Zurgo Helmsmasher he's a great general and the place for Mardu is between him and Oros, the Avenger

So I'd like to thank the people who commented on this for your suggestions. I just finished three more deck designs (Marath, Will of the Wild hydras/burn, Brigid, Hero of Kinsbaile field wipe/token spawn deck and a Selvala, Explorer Returned heroic deck). And I think for Bant I'll be doing either Phelddagrif or Rafiq of the Many, for Golgari I'll probably do Vhati il-Dal, Mardu I'll probably do Oros, the Avenger and I have no clue for a second monoblack or Simic deck.

Also, if you guys want please check out any of the decks I've made so far. You guys were really a huge help!

Second black commander Ob Nixilis, the Fallen mono black ramp

Actually my friend suggested that same exact thing. It sounds fun but I don't know of it's feasible. But it's worth a shot.

Mono-Black: Toshiro Umezawa Horobi, Death's Wail or Balthor the Defiled (hardmode: Phage the Untouchable)

Simic: you only have six options anyway, I'd go with Experiment Kraj as it has the most potential to do unusual things.

December 21, 2014 12:26 p.m.

dbpunk says... #21

So I'm actually finished with my Simic deck (it's flash fun) and mono black is really a ramp deck.

I finished designing all 30 decks and I'd like to thank all the people who commented on this and gave me suggestions. I actually plan on making them all and I would really appreciate suggestions you guys say before I actually order all the cards and whatnot (note: it'll probably take years and years but it's a goal of mine). Please check them out they're all here: dbpunk

Sapling of Colfenor is pretty interesting to build.

December 23, 2014 2 a.m.

dbpunk says... #24

Actually I kinda wanna do a Sapling of Colfenor deck. I was thinking kind of a reanimator and forced blocking type thing. With lots of cards like Lure. Opinions?

December 23, 2014 2:20 a.m.

Foxhound438 says... #25

My own sapling of colfenor deck focuses heavily on spell-on-a-stick creatures, like Acidic Slime and Shriekmaw. Also runs a lot of bestow creatures and a couple soulbounds.
