Need a new commander deck.

Commander (EDH) forum

I am interested in using a new commander. I have had Mayael the Anima. Phenax, God of Deception, and Roon of the Hidden Realm.

I have the white and blue 2014 commander precons, I am curious as to the benefits of having a mono colored edh deck vs a multicolored deck.

Mono-colored's biggest benefit, in my opinion, is the mana base. You don't have to worry about how much of each color you have, since all your lands produce the same color. However, it loses to Iona and any sort of color hate, so be cautious.

Mono-coloured decks have a very strong focus, and you will never be colour screwed. It is less important to have cards that fix your colours, like the signets, and more important to have good cards. They are also cheaper than multicoloured decks since the landbase is just basics and some utility lands. At the same time, you can only use the strengths of that one colour. Playing a monocoloured deck means you can't do certain things, like how red decks have no counterspells. This can be overcome with artifacts, but they are normally more mana intensive than just having the cards in a second colour.

I would recommend trying out a monocoloured deck. They tend to be less "goodstuff" decks and more so "theme" decks, where you have one idea and put in all the relevant cards of that colour. Plus if you really hate the deck, at least it was cheaper than building a multicoloured deck.

Yeah. Okay. I like commanders that have abilities, but isn't a planeswalker.

I will caution you that playing monocolored decks is inherently risky because you're very limited in what you can do. While it's true that you can still have a strong focus, you don't get the cross-color utility that comes naturally in multicolored decks. The weaknesses inherent in any slice of the color pie will become the weaknesses inherent in your deck.

I don't mean to discourage you by saying that, though. It's worth trying a monocolored deck if you're interested in doing so. But be aware that there are defined and clear downsides to this kind of approach; it's not a matter of benefits so much as it is a consideration of all of the options that are and aren't available to you.

Sounds like you want Jaya Ballard, Task Mage. The most planeswalkery creature there is.

But for the colours you have, consider Eight-and-a-Half-Tails Lin Sivvi, Defiant Hero, Mikaeus, the Lunarch, Opal-Eye, Konda's Yojimbo, Arcanis the Omnipotent, Arcum Dagsson, Empress Galina, Kaho, Minamo Historian, or Muzzio, Visionary Architect. There are lots of other options, but these are ones with cool and relevant abilities.

Oh I love Muzzio. Thanks lemmingllama! I would appreciate more help on the abzan deck you previously commented on as well :)

No problem. If you put the link to your Muzzio deck on my profile when its done, I'll take a look and offer some suggestions.
