Muldrotha, the Gravetide VS Karador, Ghost Chieftain

I'm getting bored of Meren of Clan Nel Toth EDH and I was about to build around Karador... then Muldrotha was spoiled and I'm completely torn. My question is, do you think Muldrotha will pull her weight in competitive EDH? Especially in comparison with Karador.

In my opinion, the 6 cost on Muldrotha is prohibitive when you compare it with Karador costing 3, then 3, then 3...

Gaining Blue is a big deal though, so maybe that will make her(?) worth running over Karador. My personal choice is still Karador because you get access to cards like Path, Swords, Voice of Resurgence, and combo cards like Finks.

Yeah, that's what I was thinking... she'll have a huge target on her back for 6cmc... but access to counter spells might help circumvent burn spells etc... Plus the Protean Hulk combo in Abzan runs zero dead draw cards... On the other hand... Sultai gives us access to Flash...

Seems like it'd be important to also bring up that karador will only grab you a single creature while muldrotha will grab a creature and an enchantment and an artifact and a planeswalker. I mean probably not all in the same turn unless you have a lot of mana but it is certainly worth considering being able to grab any permanent from your grave vs just creatures. Still that cost reduction can be amazing...

For Muldrotha, running low cmc self sacrificing permanents (Seal of Primordium,Seal of Removal,Seal of Doom,Executioner's Capsule,Lion's Eye Diamond and the obvious) with green's ramp would be pretty nasty... cumulative upkeep enchantments like Mystic Remora would be awesome. If you ran a really low curve, you could even run copy cards like Phantasmal Image on Muldrotha to push more value out of your graveyard... the big issue is casting her and keeping her on the field... with green ramp, you could cast her early and with blue you could protect her with counter spells... but you'll need to run a lot of both and it might thin your deck a little. I'm excited to see how it plays regardless, I think it's going to be more competitive than a lot of people are giving it credit.

For sure, I didn't mean to just kick Mulgrotha to the curb. Her and Karador are two different decks with similar goals for sure, and both will have their own little edges and niches. The LED synergy is a big big deal on its own!

One great interaction with Muldrotha is that you can use Lion's Eye Diamond twice in a turn and use that mana for whatever in your graveyard as with muldrotha on the field you don't care too much whether a permanent is in your hand or grave.

She actually combos with LED while on the topic. Cast and Sac LED for UUU (hand or yard) Cast Phantasmal to copy Mul (hand or yard) Sacrafice the original Mul (put him in yard) Use copy to cast LED from yard Sac for BBB Cast Animate Dead from hand or yard targeting the original Mul Use the original to start the process over and net BU each time.

I don't think anyone has said it yet, but just to add on to a comment from earlier, Muldrotha also lets you play lands from your graveyard.

Yeah, that's true. She probably plays well with Strip Mine type lands. Probably The Gitrog Monster would play well too.

I think, if you were getting bored of Meren, Karador will be more of the same. Both just deal with creatures, whereas Muldrotha deals with all permanent types, allowing you to mess around with self sacrificing artifacts, enchantments, and lands on top of the creatures. This makes gameplay more fun, flexible, different, and interesting every time. I think in the long run, Muldrotha will be more fun for you.

That said, if you're talking competitive EDH, the answer might be different. I don't know that space.

I just thought of something... Lethal Vapors. I think I'll end up going with Muldrotha. I just can't see any Sultai commander not being competitive... and all of the possibilities have to be more interesting to build around and pilot.
