MOST ANNOYING / HATED EDH GENERAL

Commander (EDH) forum

I wanna make an annoying edh deck and I want the general to be the most hated general (in your opinion). Please don't tell me Animar or Kaalia. It also has to be a semi-good general too. It also can't be too expensive.

If you are just trying to piss people off Arcum Dagsson is great. Just let no one else play magic after the 3rd turn and then go on the 1/1 token and 2/2 beat down program.

Why has no-one mentioned Zur the Enchanter ?

August 25, 2014 5:20 p.m.

If it wouldn't be too much trouble if you already have a decklist on here, please tag it so I can take a look at the strategy behind the deck and maybe get some ideas from it.

Thanks!

I have straight out told a friend not to build Zur the Enchanter because it will be degenerate. There are other ways to build it, but human nature lends to people having a hard time building subpar decks on purpose.

Also, any blue Commander that encourages "I steal all your things" could fit.

Oloro, Ageless Ascetic seems to annoy people.

Kaalia of the Vast , Sen Triplets , Zur the Enchanter .

I have a personal thing against any commander that tutors. They're far too reliable and generate too much consistency. EDH decks run singletons for a reason.

I'm surprised no one has mentioned Memnarch cause who does not want all their creatures stolen?

August 25, 2014 6:05 p.m.

Arvail says... #11

Memnarch is annoying, but he's also a 7 mana investment in a mono color. You tend to limit yourself a lot by going with him. Mono blue's just much better off running Azami, Lady of Scrolls or Arcum Dagsson .

I'd either say Arcum Dagsson (already mentioned) or a Derevi, Empyrial Tactician statis deck. Just a question, are you trying to lose friends?

I'm surprised nobody has mentioned Iona, Shield of Emeria , or Avacyn, Angel of Hope . those two are particularly brutal to play against.

Thraximundar is annoying. It's not really Thraximundar that is the problem though, it's just the way people build those kinds of decks. If you see him, you can almost expect some kind of stacks deck, or pounds of "I sac, you sac" tactics.

I also don't like generals that slow the game down. Again, the commander is not the real issue. The bigger problem is what you can typically expect from certain generals in terms of deck construction.

I find Jeleva to be an especially bothersome commander in multiplayer games. Her colors have a lot of 'good stuff' and my experience playing vs her in multi games is the pilot sometimes ends up with multiple copies of things like Demonic Tutor .

August 26, 2014 11:04 p.m.

Just the commander? V-Clique is by far the most annoying to me. The deck as a while? Azami can get sold into slavery for all I care, I hope arcum gets eaten by a blightsteel colossus. Zur the enchanter is pretty annoying too.

Momir Vig. Your can either go the combo route with mana elves and win turn 5 or 6, or just tutor out big powerful creatures. Always annoys people when I play with it.

I'm not a fan of Arcum Dagsson or Sliver Overlord because they provide powerful, reusable tutoring in the Commander slot, often leading to the same scheme being played game after game after game.

Oh look Arcum went and grabbed Darksteel Forge , I wonder if he'll be going to grab Nevinyrral's Disk next? My God, Sliver Overlord went and nabbed Hibernation Sliver , like a colossus he strides across the fields of innovation. When you see these Commanders you know you have to have an answer within two activations or they've won, and if they're still alive to cast it again it's the same deal. The plan never changes with these Commanders, there's never anything charming or novel about playing with or against them, it's just drop the Commander and start ticking boxes until you've won.

Not that I think they're unfair. Quite the contrary, the nature of the format makes it damn hard to actually use these Commanders in a pod of people that know what they're doing. I just think they're dull/annoying to play against because of the potency tutoring has in singleton format and what it does when you're building around it as something provided by your Commander.

@FancyTuesday: its true about most tutor commander decks, the strategy is very linear. However in a lot of competetive decks, tutor general or not you still see them played as much like a 60 card deck as possible. Functional reprints FTW.

FancyTuesday says... #29

@enpc: So I've heard, though I can't speak to competitive EDH. I do play in a league but the meta is hardly what I'd consider competitive. I hear tell of turn 4 wins and decks running a dozen cantrips and functional reprints, but I've never encountered anything like that personally.

I guess what makes those two stand out is that they define even casual decks. Of course you can load up on tutors and transmutes and cantrips with any Commander and just fish as hard as you possibly can till you hit that combo piece you need to go off, but with Arcum Dagsson and Sliver Overlord the tutoring element is innate to the Commander and by extension any deck built around them. That leads to the very "linear" play I see in their decks even across multiple people playing them.

enpc says... #30

without doubt. Usually with a tutor general (so I'll include Zur and Sisay here too) the deck does only contain one win condition. But its the toolbox effect that makes them so annnoying I personally find (I say this since my girlfriend runs a Captain Sisay deck which is slightly more than frustrating to play against). Lock you down, lock you down, lock you down, dig out my combo, win kind of thing.

Memnarch is the most brutal deck I have built and I can see why people hate playing against it. I have gotten many many many turn 2 wins or I say I have infinite blue every turn im gonna steal all your permanents.

September 6, 2014 4:35 p.m.

@AlteredDNA89, do you have a decklist I can see for it?

September 6, 2014 4:42 p.m.

AlteredDNA89 says... #33

@lotsofblackness, I do not have a decklist on me but I can very easily list it sometime. its a home brew of a bunch of lists I have seen and put together. it is strictly combo. needless to say if Serra Ascendant comes out turn one im on a fast clock

A buddy of mine built this nasty Boros token deck with Aurelia, the Warleader as the commander and my god does it get annoying to deal with 15+ tokens that are boosted by enchantments and are likely to swing again.

Marchesa, the Black Rose is fairly annoying. The Bitter Taste of Sweet Decay.

Doesn't matter how many times i use this deck, someone seems to forget that my guys dont stay gone, and in fact by killing them they are doing me a favour.

January 14, 2015 3:44 p.m.

@lotusofblackness Did you ever pick a commander?

January 14, 2015 5:32 p.m.

@HeroInMyOwnMind, Yes I have. I currently am trying to make a Jhoira of the Ghitu EDH deck, but I would be willing to find other generals to make too.

Iona, Shield of Emeria is the worst commander to play against. She makes the game stop being fun. It should be banned because it goes against the fundamental idea of EDH being fun.

This is a very easy question for me.

Zedruu the Greathearted

Absolutely unabashedly the most degenerate general I've ever played against. At least degenerate aggro or turn-3 combo decks kill you quickly so you can just not play with that person anymore. Zedruu will make a game take hours, mercilessly f***ing you over until you can't handle it anymore and scoop.

Every time a Zedruu player has told me that "No, no, I play political Zedruu!" it has been a bold-faced lie. I have played with Zedruu decks at least a dozen times, so I have given it plenty of chances to prove otherwise.

When a player pulls out a Zedruu deck, I will literally walk away from the table. Really, I'm just hastening the process of quiting the game out of anger several hours later.
