Mairsil, The Pretender

Commander (EDH) forum

It's no secret that when you sit down for a game of EDH and someone at the table slams a moderately tuned Mairsil, the Pretender deck down, you and everyone else thinks to themselves "oh God, here we go.."

I'm curious about this build and forgive me, but also perhaps a bit salty. Mairsil just seems so unanswerable once shes cages things that allow her to flicker, or cages the dreaded Nevinyrral's Disk . It seems that there is no choice but to deem the Mairsil player as Arch enemy as soon as the game starts because of how broken these decks can get.

What are everyones opinions? Are there enough answers for caged cards? I know about the eldrazi processors, and cards like Pithing Needle and counters like Disallow and Stifle but in my opinion, there just aren't enough answers for a Mairsil deck.

Has anyone found a good way to shut these decks down?

There are a couple cards that completely stop opponents from using creature-based activated abilities: Cursed Totem , Damping Matrix , Linvala, Keeper of Silence , and Voidstone Gargoyle

Phyrexian Revoker and Sorcerous Spyglass allow you to stop Mairsil without targeting it, so it bypasses flicker mechanics.

Suppression Field taxes the activated abilities, making them harder to use.

Trickbind is another counter that has the added benefit of Split Second, and could be worth including.

You could use removal with split second to kill Mairsil without it being able to flicker in response: Molten Disaster , Sudden Death , Take Possession , Wipe Away .

Sudden Spoiling neuters Mairsil for the turn.

Gilded Drake , Song of the Dryads , Lignify , Kasmina's Transformation, Imprisoned in the Moon , Darksteel Mutation , Humility , Metamorphic Alteration , Deep Freeze , Nevermore , New Blood , Ritual of the Machine , Helm of Possession , and so many other cards are good not just against Mairsil, but against any problematic commander.

Solemnity has a very wide effect and is multipurpose so that your deck wont have such a dead card when not facing the mairsil.

MizzMizz - it would not continue after the Phyrexian Revoker left the battlefield. Phyrexian Revoker and cards like it have a "Static Ability", which only functions while the permanent is on the battlefield (Rule 604.2).

Solemnity does not stop Mairsil's ability. As exiled cards are not permanents, so are not creatures or artifacts. This is spelled out on the gatherer page for solemnity: "Counters can be put on cards that aren't on the battlefield"

Oh alright, I forgot that the cage counters go on the cards, not Mairsil.

Other than all of the other great suggestions above, early game hand disruption can force key pieces into the graveyard where they're easier to deal with.

Also, it's worth noting that Mairsil is male. and i'm fairly certain he's behind Jaya sparking. c:

Mairsil is my absolute favorite deck and is certainly difficult to deal with. The way I've set him up people often have to use 2 or sometimes 3 removal spells in a single turn to get one to stick. Then I just recast him the next turn...

All that said lots of cards mostly mentioned above will destroy the deck. I wouldn't bother with things already in exile. The cards that do that are so very specific that they do almost nothing outside of being a minor annoyance even to Mairsil. Damping Matrix on the other hand is a card I fear when playing the deck.

Mairsil has been an odd one for me to learn. Most important is to keep in mind that each ability can only be used once each turn. So if they use that AEtherling to dodge your Murder and don't have anything else caged get someone to throw another removal.
