Jank Control?

Commander (EDH) forum

Hi there!

I've been challenged to create a control deck. This is so far outside of my comfort zone that I would need to Jank it up!

I'd love to discuss some suggestions for control Commanders that aren't overpowered. Something that could be built to about a 7 power.

Thanks in advance!

I think a Noyan Dar, Roil Shaper lands matters type deck could be really cool. I have a buddy who plays one that is basically a draw-go deck looking to wipe the board a bunch and take over the game as people lose resources. Cards like Tomik, Distinguished Advokist and Sacred Ground also give this type of deck redundancy. Not to mention the fact that Noyan's ability is so open, you can adjust your spells to be what you want, maybe putting in some weird jank.

DeinoStinkus I have always been interested in Yennett. She's so odd lol. I'm also thinking of Lurrus of the Dream-Den. Orzhov has some fun hijinks that could be worth exploring.

Lurrus seems incredibly fun- but not necessarily for a control deck. Although Orzhov control, while lacking in counter spells, has basically everything else you need.

It’s got board wipes, premium removal, card advantage, and a vast assortment of finishers.

If you did go that route I would play a lot cheap permanents like Dark Confidant and Stitcher's Supplier for card advantage, Bitterblossom for lots of blockers. Notreally any aggressive cards. You finishers being walkers like Elspeth, Sun's Champion and Sorin, Grim Nemesis.

There are a lot of different kinds of control. Since you mentioned Jank, I would recommend staying away from blue (or go deep end blue jank).

The Orzhov recommendation is pretty good. I would recommend Kambal, Consul of Allocation or Karlov of the Ghost Council, or Teysa, Orzhov Scion. Intermix elements of pillow fort and lifegain with control elements of board wipes and spot removal to get you ahead. Also, black has the best discard and acts as a great counter to blue/opponent card advantage.

Speaking of discard, you could go with a mono-black discard strategy which is an amazing resource denial (black at its best) for your opponents. There is Rankle, Master of Pranks and Tinybones, Trinket Thief who would probably work best but there are also others.
