I want to play storm in Commander. Any ideas?

Commander (EDH) forum

Posted on Aug. 9, 2015, 11:34 p.m. by Hashtag-Netdeck

I play Modern Izzet Storm, and I have absolutely fallen in love with the combos, synergies, and the archetype in general. My opponents (for obvious reasons) think it's a headache-incarnate, but I love it.

This thread is basically ideas of theorizing storm, because I don't know where to go with it. In a format like Modern or Legacy, (I'll just use Grapeshot for an example), you need usually 12-20 copies. In EDH, you need 100s. LITERALLY.

I think that Storm's commander colors would probably be Grixis, but I don't want to make the commander Marchesa or Tetsuo, but I don't know what the commander will be.

I usually play EDH with 2-4 opponents, so the preferred win-cons would be Empty the Warrens or Tendrils, but I tend to win games of Modern with Pyromancer Ascension (read the card, it does literally NOTHING in commander).

Any help is greatly appreciated, and I'll try to get back to you as soon as possible. ;)

You really need Omniscience for it. I've done some brainstorming on this before. Bare minimum you should run an Izzet-aligned deck.

Damage doublers like Dictate of the Twin Gods also suggested.

O, and that check 3 spell used in Legacy Omni-Storm.

So would Melek, Izzet Paragon be a good general?

August 9, 2015 11:41 p.m.

My friend plays a melek deck that storms off 80% of the time if he isn't dealt with. He uses a weird combination of High Tide Turnabout and Ignite Memories to name a few. Essentially when he storms off it is 15-20 minutes of watching him tap and untap stuff lol

August 9, 2015 11:47 p.m.

What's his commander?

August 9, 2015 11:49 p.m.

I've seen Melek use a copy of Proteus Staff to stack their entire deck.

Dragonstorm because you'll be cool.

NotSoLuckyLydia, fadelightningmm, Karns_Pyromancer: Would Jeleva, Nephalia's Scourge be a viable Storm commander?

Sorry, I forgot that typing "#" would increase the font size :(

August 9, 2015 11:57 p.m.

NoPantsParade: Dragonstorm searching for Kokusho, the Evening Star and Bogardan Hellkite? IDK, but I do like the card.

August 9, 2015 11:57 p.m.

Well, infinite mana will help this, so Deadeye Navigator with Great Whale, Peregrine Drake, and/or Palinchron is a must. Palinchron with Phantasmal Image will also work, as well as upping the storm count by one every time. Archaeomancer will help you to recur spells and Rune-Scarred Demon will let you tutor for your win cons. From there, you really just want to build a shell that can protect your combo. From there, seeing that you want red, a cheap Grixis general is your best bet. Perhaps Gwendlyn Di Corci, Tetsuo Umezawa, or Jeleva, Nephalia's Scourge?

ItchiUchiha117, NoPantsParade, NotSoLuckyLydia, fadelightningmm, and Karns_Pyromancer: I'm about to start a Jeleva, Nephalia's Scourge Commander/EDH deck, and I'll comment a link to it soon.

Nah, Dragonstorm for Utvara Hellkite and Scourge of Valkas and other dragons aka my dream modern deck.

There is an Izzet Dragonstorm deck floating around with Melek at the helm.

August 10, 2015 12:04 a.m.

That deck sounds awesome. But from a competitive standpoint (don't get me wrong, I love doing insanely fun stuff with cards like Dragonstorm), do you think Dragonstorm is playable?

Eh. It is fun from a casual standpoint.

Or Nekusar storm?

August 10, 2015 12:10 a.m.

I think you have it set to private, boss. Can't access it.

August 10, 2015 12:13 a.m.

I prefer Jeleva, M a g i c a l H a c k e r, because each turn she gets more value, and unlike Nekusar, takes my opponents stuff instead of giving them cards. I have considered him in the 99, though.

August 10, 2015 12:14 a.m.

Oh! Sorry! I'm an idiot! Sorry! I'll change it! BRB!

August 10, 2015 12:14 a.m.

'kay guys, it's not private anymore, so you shouldn't have any problems accessing it (now).

@fadelightningmm: I also run a Melek, Izzet Paragon deck that uses those types of cards and often wins with storm. It also uses Sphinx-Bone Wand and Guttersnipe as other win-cons. It is super fun.

Here it is for reference: The Untold Story of the Izzet Paragon

August 10, 2015 12:33 a.m.

Thanks, I'll definitely put those in my Jeleva Deck.

August 10, 2015 12:35 a.m.

My question to you is with storm as a win con how much use is black bringing to the table? When I think storm izzet comes to mind not grixis. Unless your meta requires you to use black for its removal I think burn and bounce will be enough

August 10, 2015 1:19 a.m.

Tutors and Tendrils of Agony are incredibly powerful, especially given the format.

August 10, 2015 1:23 a.m.

I have all those, believe me, in the deck, but right now I need to cut a LOOOOOOOOOOOOOOT of cards.

If you could check it out, it would be greatly appreciated.

You can also try to go into Magus of the Future combo with the cards that lets you cast artifacts for one less and Sensei's Divining Top you can draw your whole library and cast quite a lot tops. You'll have a nice storm count and can probably finish by discarding for damage (don't know a specific card jet) or try to kill with a damage doubler and grapeshot or similar cards. Although it sounds quite complicated to assemble such a combo

August 10, 2015 3:20 a.m.

Future Sight and its Magus are definitely going in the deck.

Thanks, AlexoBn!

Hashtag, If you can just storm out with Omniscience + Enter the Infinite JUST ONCE - I will give you five US dollars.

August 10, 2015 10:32 a.m.

Enter the Infinite + Omniscience + Yawgmoth's Will = cast your whole library twice and storm for a billion. Best game everm Maringam, literally BEST game ever.

August 10, 2015 1:04 p.m.

Actually, Omniscience specifically states "from your hand." You still have to pay mana cost when casting from exile, graveyard, and command zone.

I'd run Melek or Jeleva as the commander, for sure. Especially Melek, because if you play a ton of spells before casting a storm card off the top of your library you get even more copies! This was a planned win condition in the Melek deck I was working on for a while.

I've already made an EDH storm deck, Winning is a Hobby, and if you want it to be even more consistent, drop red and add some blue bounce creatures to go for the Storm combo with Tendrils.

I have an Oona deck that uses Future Sight + SDT COMBO as an alt win con. I set it up with Insidious Dreams. It's a gamble but it works.

A friend of mine is absolutely in love with storm, and all of the mathmatics involved giving himself the personal restriction of having to storm off without going infinite and he does so using his commander Riku of Two Reflections and cards like Past in Flames and Rude Awakening and other ways to produce massive quantities of mana and allowing him to play things multiple times, I have to say it's arguably the most fun deck I've ever watch go off, every one at the table starts counting and following his math, wondering if he's going to get there or not or if he'll make a mistake as his plays are balanced on a knife's edge where they could fail at the slightest mistake.

That sounds amazing, almalong. I'd love to see that deck!

What you need is Narset, Enlightened Master. To quote Cam from LRR "Omniscience and an Enter the Infinite, to cast your entire topdeck twice using Past in Flames. And then you Grapeshot for 200. Jokes aside, Narset gives you access to white, which allows both Enlightened Tutor and Idyllic Tutor, which allows a well executed combo. Another Brilliant Piece you get from white here is Myth Realized. Any who, have fun with it.

Forget Jevala. Storm out with Mishra, Artificer Prodigy, Blood Funnel and Vedalken Archmage.

AlexoBn says... #40

I would not play narset. She will be hated a lot simply because it is auto pilot...I would go for a commander that benefits of its understatement. You will have it easier to combo off. Imho (although I have to admit that narset can be incredibly strong)

sonnet666 says... #41

So... Mishra?

Nothing says understated like your opponents not being able to figure out how your commander works.

Not a storm player myself, but I just find decks that require that kind of careful and clever play fascinating and I want to see how it works.

In my jhoira deck I have some combos. One of them is cloudstone curio plus 0 cost kobolds, win with purphoros, grapeshot or infinite hasty goblins.
