I brought Counterpunch

Commander (EDH) forum

I was told today, that Sword of War and PeaceMTG Card: Sword of War and Peace and those sorts are very good in Commander. Currently, I'm trying to find cards for the Counterpunch, maybe some improvements for that deck. I was told the actual. Commander, SUCKS. So, what Commander should I get? Should I change up the colors? How many lands should I have? How many, basics should I have? I need a GAME. Please any advice would be seriously helpful. Thanks!

Just wondering, if I use a Black, Commander, can do I have to use ONLY Black creatures, sorcery and instants, then Artifacts.

if you play EDH your general colours are the colour identity of the deck meaning if your general is Korlash, Heir to BlackbladeMTG Card: Korlash, Heir to Blackblade for example you deck can only contain mono black or colourless cards same goes for lands. not even hybrid costing cards are permitted. most generals are straight forward and their colour is just in their mana cost. some are less straight forward like Rhys the RedeemedMTG Card: Rhys the Redeemed would be white/green and Rhys the ExiledMTG Card: Rhys the Exiled is black/green. I quite like the counterpunch generals because they are flavourful but I would use the Karador, Ghost ChieftainMTG Card: Karador, Ghost Chieftain as commander and then switch out some weaker cards for better ones and because your general is expensive put in some land fetch and mana rocks should work well for multiplayer but not really for one v one i wouldn't think the swords do work very well check out my deck Storm of Swords its harsh and fun lol

flip cards are the colours of both sides of the cards so that one is black mate so would be legal for you but not in a Kemba, Kha RegentMTG Card: Kemba, Kha Regent deck for example

If you post a decklist, I'll check it out. I'm fairly well-versed in EDH strategies, builds, cards, etc.

Your general must be a legendary creature in its default state, so is out.

Also, Ghave, Guru of SporesMTG Card: Ghave, Guru of Spores can be a phenomenal build - whoever told you it was bad clearly hasn't seen a modified variant of the deck or doesn't believe in combos.

I have a prototype Ghave build here, if you want to check it out: deck:eden-2

Typically, an EDH deck will run between 34-36 lands. What lands you run is largely influenced by the type of deck, your support cards, color saturation, CMCs, and the number of colors you run.

As for which colors you run, note that each offers something different to an EDH deck. These are some basic groupings, and they don't acknowledge everything a given color can do.

White: Mass removal, targeted anti-artifact/enchantment/creature, recursion

Blue: Control spells, draw power

Black: Tutors (an absurdly useful utility in EDH), mass removal, draw power, recursion

Red: Anti-artifact/land, direct damage

Green: Tutors, ramp (also absurdly useful, especially in multicolored decks), fatties, anti-artifact/enchantment

Artifacts: (technically not a color slice, but they deserve recognition) removal (Oblivion StoneMTG Card: Oblivion Stone, ramp (mana rocks like Darksteel IngotMTG Card: Darksteel Ingot, the Guild Signets, etc.), utility (Mimic VatMTG Card: Mimic Vat, Scroll RackMTG Card: Scroll Rack)

Of all the colors, green and black are the best in EDH. They offer so much power in so many different areas that a GBX deck can easily dominate if built well.

A note on the swords: they're good, but they also need to be used properly. If you have a combo-based deck, then they aren't really all that useful. In a deck that swings for general damage, however, the right equipment can make a huge difference.

i would say that you should certainly include a Sensei's Divining TopMTG Card: Sensei's Divining Top if you can afford it is immense and you already have a sol ring in your precon black should include a Demonic TutorMTG Card: Demonic Tutor and Diabolic TutorMTG Card: Diabolic Tutor if you can afford the demonic that is and white and black also let you wrath and kill anything you bloody well please. as Epoch ghave can be powerful but if you are new to EDH a more straight forward build may be preferable which is why I suggest Karador, Ghost ChieftainMTG Card: Karador, Ghost Chieftain cuz hes arguably more helpful and gets better later game as opposed to most generals that get more expensive and sometimes maybe actually worse. i would say all the precons are good in my own opinion some better that others granted but they are all well worth buying at least to start a deck if nothing else

Throw a Doubling SeasonMTG Card: Doubling Season a Parallel LivesMTG Card: Parallel Lives and a Sigil CaptainMTG Card: Sigil Captain in there with ghave and watch the beating commence. Check out my Ghave build deck:ghave-guru-of-spores-18.

Sigil CaptainMTG Card: Sigil Captain + Ghave, Guru of SporesMTG Card: Ghave, Guru of Spores = 1 put a 1/1 saproling into play with a +1/+1 counter on it (remove a counter from ghave make a saproling, the captain makes it 3/3) spend one mana, remove a counter from the saproling make another 3/3. If you get both counters of the saproling then sac it to Ashnod's AltarMTG Card: Ashnod's Altar I believe it goes infinite)
