Help for a very funny commander!

Commander (EDH) forum

Hello all!

I've been building commander decks for a while now. The only problem is that I think some commanders are overused while some does not even have a decklist on TappedOut. That is what happened when I first built my deck:

I would like to know your idea on some unused commanders that I could build an entire deck on. Either it is to abuse the commander's ability, or is it just because you think it is strong, I would like your idea!

I will also say that I am not a beginner, so I can easily do it with difficult combos/control decks. Please help me!

i made a Varolz, the Scar-Striped commander deck IRL, and it is AWESOME. All you creatures always have scavenge. also there is a cool combo with Jarad's Orders: search for Reaper from the Abyss + Reassembling Skeleton . sacrifice reassembling skeleton to regenerate varolz, at the end of the turn destroy target non-demon, non-baneslayer angel creature. pay 1 B and 1 to do this every turn.

Well, there's always Haakon, Stromgald Scourge...

Seriously though, a lot of commanders don't see much play because they're terrible- see the vanilla legends from Legends. Some are just underplayed because they aren't perceived as strong. Here's a short list of interesting generals: Hazezon Tamar, Korlash, Heir to Blackblade, Lyzolda, the Blood Witch, Mishra, Artificer Prodigy, Nin, the Pain Artist, Stangg, Tetsuo Umezawa, Vhati il-Dal, and Wydwen, the Biting Gale.

Thanks both nighthawk101 and RhobearST! Which one you suggest I should build a deck of?

The top three from my list are (in my opinion) Nin, Vhati, and Wydwen.

Lord of Tresserhorn, Halfdane, Iname as One, Dralnu, Lich Lord, and Karona, False God are also some commanders that are borderline playable, but all have faults that make them less than ideal.

I'll also say that Mishra, Artificer Prodigy mentioned above is pretty great if you design the deck properly. He is one of the best Storm generals, other than maybe Oloro, Ageless Ascetic

I've been making decks around unused and unplayable (at first glance) commanders. Here's some of them:

Gotta know how to build that combo Mishra

Build one around one of the legendary Kirins: Bounteous Kirin, Celestial Kirin, Cloudhoof Kirin, Skyfire Kirin, and Infernal Kirin. They all look weak, but the red one and the white one are actually fairly strong, and the black one can lock people out of the game - fun!

I know this sounds a little weird, but how about Squee, Goblin Nabob. He would make a mean voltron commander as soon as mine comes in the mail I am going to start building around him.

Just want to point out that neither of the Niv-Mizzets do commander damage via their abilities. Commander damage is is only combat damage.

I builded a Snake Tribal deck with [Seshiro the Anointed] (I don't know if it's rare but i didn't see one before). Pretty effective and straight forward : drop as many snake as you can, till turn 5 or 6, cast Seshiro, draw cards, rince (probably someone will wrath) and repeat.

I love your evil coins decks. I wish they got more attention. Really creative stuff. I've tried to make decks with "fun" commanders or "interactive" themes and people just blow them away with tryhard decks... and then they bitch and moan when I pull out my tryhard decks. Can't win!

I think Ib Halfheart, Goblin Tactician would be a real unique twist on goblins in EDH instead of running the usual Krenko, Mob Boss or Wort, Boggart Auntie.

I made a tribal Ice Age-themed Lovisa Coldeyes deck but I haven't bothered to put it together because one mono-red deck is enough for me. I tried making a sphinx-themed Isperia the Inscrutable deck but I couldn't find a non-infinite win condition. I also think it would just annoy people with all the mini-games and long turns.

My next goal is to make a Mangara of Corondor deck, abusing her ability to exile and using all of white's exiling tools. Some day I'd like to make a Rakdos the Defiler deck; the awesomeness of being able to survive multiple swings by him in a multiplayer game makes my deck building gears churn... but it would probably get hated off the table before I could get him out. I love the art from Mirage block but sadly none of the Legendaries from it are very playable. Zirilan of the Claw would take serious tutoring and tricks to dodge the exile effect and it would be constant shuffling; Asmira, Holy Avenger makes me want to do a voltron but forcing the trigger in G/W would be pretty awkward.

tl;dr: There's tons of unique commanders out there, its just a matter of what your playgroup "lets" you play.

@suneater Yeah, you can't win. If you win the game, you lose the trust of the group. If you win the trust of the playgroup, you don't end up winning. It's kind of poetic.

I have a friend who runs Gus in a unformate\grouphug commander. (Our play group is ok with the fact Gus doesn't have the legendary type, because we concluded that he's clearly a unique creature)
