Heads Up High Quality Fakes

Commander (EDH) forum

twice now i have received some extremely high quality fake cards from reputable online venders
i'm leaving there names out of this because these fakes are so good i cant blame the venders for not catching them
they pass almost every test you can give them the card stock even passes the bend test and the detail is absolutely amazing
but that's one of the two give aways when compared to a controled source the detail of the rosette pattern is actualy much more crisp and easier to see
second in the light test there is a tiny hint of yellow
but the one dead give away is the card finish
its not as slick as a magic card if your try to slide your thumb on the back of the card it sticks
also the flex and thickness are just a hair off
there so good that i doubted they were fakes
but i took out 60 random cards printed from the same expansion set had a friend shuffle them face down hand them to me with my eyes closed by feel i could pull the two fakes out 8 times in a row

wotc should find out whos making these things and then higher them to make real cards because they really are nicer then the real thing

I received some as well, though this has been a while back. One was way too dark but the others were spot on.

I got a Steam Vents and a Damnation , the vents is spot on but the Damnation is too dark for a color shifted card.

They feel better than actual Magic cards is the thing though. Lol

I need to find an image host so i can take a picture and post it on the forum.
The print quality of my blasting zone is so much better then the real thing and even the shading of the mana symbols is spot on, ive never seen a fake get that right before.

I haven't ordered any cards online for a long time, so I don't have any special history here. But I've heard second-hand that printers outside the USA use a different cardstock and printing process. Assuming your cards are printing in English, is it possible you've been getting cards printed somewhere else? Do other printers print for the English-speaking market?

We thought of that, i know that some sets had multiple company's print for them and there can be some difference
But its the finish coat of the cards that really set it apart, when you hold it it feels like your holding a poker playing card.

RambIe thanks for the heads-up!

I'll put it this way
When i order cards i dont inspect them i just open the package leave a 5 star review and sleave them into a deck
the second i touched them they felt so different that it grabbed my attention that somthing wasnt right

I use the Imgur app to post images on here. I’ll post some pics of mine later. I got a snapcaster too, but I got it buying a cheap collection on FB.

For some reason I can’t tag you, it tags a different account named Ramble.

I just tried a poker card and a Magic card side by side, and the poker card is noticeably... tackier? If that's the difference you feel, that's definitely worth looking into.

My fakes feel noticeably smoother. But when they’re sleeved you can hardly tell the difference with some of them.

Let me know what y’all think

The Damnation is the most obvious fake, the others are much better.

April 3, 2021 2:17 p.m.

Yeah, those are well made. There does seem to be something just slightly off about them, but that may just be confirmation bias

April 3, 2021 2:23 p.m.

Hardhitta7 says... #16

Yeah the feel gives them away more than anything.

Not saying you didn't get fake cards. But could it just be poor quality control on wotcs end? I've had cards that felt grainy before. Also European cards feel different from American ones

Been buying fake/proxy cards myself for years... and I agree with the end sentiment that these vendors should be making our legitimate cards. We just had a warm spell where I live (and no homes here have air conditioning so it gets pretty warm indoors) and all my authentic cards from the recent sets all warped in their boxes while all the proxy cards still sit flat. Also I feel like the finish they use on these proxies is far superior, actually having the opposite experience as the original post. Ever since Dominaria, official cards feel somewhat rough and have a weird chemically smell to them, while the proxy cards are usually smoother and don't stick to each other like official cards do.

Though I do also agree with other points, sometimes the color is pretty off, usually a color balance issue, though, more so than how dark it is.

@shadow63, understandable but 100% positive that they are fake
got out my scope yesterday and got a good look and found the proof
on a real magic card the white highlight in the blue ball is a very specific pattern of a series of dots with a cluster of 4
white high light is blurred like a brush stroke on these cards

all three are fake
no worries i did not get ripped off the yawgmoth's will was caught by my friend during a store trade in
the blasting station i lost $1.50 on
and the dark confidant i received a refund
the hologram on the bottom of bob is impressive but its actually just a sticker and only has the planes walker symbol "there is no mana symbols"

How does the green dot test compares to the real ones? Could you post a picture like you did with the blue dot?

I am really curious about that.

Thanks for posting this!

this weekend ill try to borrow my buddies scope and grab a pic of the green dots
but touch doesn't lie, you can always feel something is not right
except for commander anthology all those cards feel fake

I feel like touch is becoming less reliable, though. For example typically when a new set comes out, I'll buy a booster box and a bundle box (so I have a place to store the new cards that makes it easily identifiable as to what cards are inside)

And I will find that there's a tactile different between the cards from the bundle box being smoother to the touch than the cards from the booster box, which are typically more rough/tacky. All the cards are official cards, but they feel dramatically different, and this has been going on for a couple years now. Different products seem to have different finishes on the card that makes them feel different. Preconstructed decks, like the commander preconstructed decks tend to have smoother finishes too.

April 5, 2021 3:17 p.m.

RambIe says... #26

that is true, if i am looking for it and paying attention
i can notice the difference between card stock even in older sets
but when i'm not paying attention like talking to someone while sleeving a deck an alarm goes off the second i touch one of these things
the only real cards that have ever set off a false alert for me is the commander anthology cards
