Graveyard commander

Commander (EDH) forum

Hello. I’m thinking of creating a graveyard themed commander (putting creatures in graveyard and bringing g them onto field at any point, while keeping them protected). Any thoughts? Thinking of maybe a couple of win-combos but not too many so if those doesn’t work I can still win though other ways. Not a big budget right now but eventually get the more expensive cards over time. Any help is appreciated.

For what you are asking I recommend either Muldrotha, the Gravetide or Meren of Clan Nel Toth.

I built Muldrotha, the Gravetide and love it

Two friends of mine in dif playgroup each play Karador, Ghost Chieftain

Not mentioned yet is the new Nethroi, Apex of Death which will be a thing

Also Tasigur, the Golden Fang, The Mimeoplasm, Balthor the Defiled, Kethis, the Hidden Hand, Gisa and Geralf, Varolz, the Scar-Striped, etc etc

My personal favorite is Feldon of the Third Path. He gets underestimated because no one ever sees him get played. Being overlooked can be to your great advantage. They don’t underestimate you again after being attacked by 4 copies of Utvara Hellkite or Pathrazer of Ulamog. You can check out the primer I made for him at FELDON EDH PRIMER: FELDON NEEDS SOME LOVE if you’re interested. Although he isn’t as versatile as more traditional, multicolored graveyard commanders.

All the above commanders are great, and are still only the tip of the iceberg. It would help your search if you could narrow down a bit, though;

  • Is there a specific color/colors you are interested in?

  • Are you wanting to reanimate a few big creatures, or repeatedly sacrifice and reanimate creatures for value?

  • Are you interested in bringing back other card types from the graveyard (i.e. Muldrotha), or just creatures?

What are you trying to do with this graveyard deck. Are you trying to reanimate the grave yard with creatures or are you looking for spells that you can recast with Archaeomancer

I'm trying to determine what colors you want and what colors you dont

I’m thinking red, black or green. I’m looking to recast some creatures whether it’s a few big ones or several small ones that can do several things.

Tariel, Reckoner of Souls is an underrated one. Might not be exactly what you are looking for though since she cares more about opponent's grave more than your own.

I had fun building her though What's Yours is Mine | Tariel EDH | PRIMER

Savra, Queen of the Golgari and Jarad, Golgari Lich Lord are two powerhouse Golgari commanders that can helm a deck like that. Meren's not the only option!

Alright. Thanks for the help so far. Is there any Aforementioned that could be on the competitive Level. I have 6 commander decks and 4 are casual/need more work on. So I’m looking for the seventh to be on a competitive level.

My guess for the most competitive with be Nethroi, Meren, and Muldrotha ?

I'd look at Gisa and Geralf.

Meren of Clan Nel Toth and Tayam, Luminous Enigma are probably your best bet for a competitive reanimator commander. Chainer, Dementia Master can also be competitive if you go the stax route. My Erebos, Bleak-Hearted deck isn't competitive but it often holds its own against high powered decks. Teysa, Orzhov Scion can also be very, very strong.

With all that said, the biggest thing for making a strong reanimator deck is filling your graveyard with combo pieces quickly and redundancy.
