Good, Fun Commanders?

Commander (EDH) forum

Hey guys! I'm looking for some fun commanders that aren't completely combotastic (but if necessary, a couple are okay), and just won't make the entire table hate you instantly. Colors don't matter, I just want to know what commander has been the most fun for you and your opponents to play.

Brion Stoutarm is my go to commander for fun over the top antics that are still somewhat competitive. Here's my list if you react to check it out:

Brion, Flinger of the Kitchen Table

I really like Vorel of the Hull Clade , but the Timmy Big Beasts version not the Johnny combo player version. Think about how the table will feel when you win with a 30/30 Champion of Lambholt .

It's all in how you build the deck really. I've always favored card synergy over going infinite in a way that wins the game every time. When I build around Karador, Ghost Chieftain I avoid Tooth and Nail , when I build around Mikaeus, the Unhallowed I stay away from Triskelion , and I don't run Pemmin's Aura in Vorel of the Hull Clade . No Disciple of the Vault in Sharuum the Hegemon either. They're all great decks and a lot of fun to play, comboing off is a decision you make when you're building not when you're choosing a commander.

That said, Krond the Dawn-Clad has a lot of utility and doesn't have any reputation or means to really "go off," he just blows stuff up. Rafiq of the Many is a pretty simple beater with good support colors. I've had a lot of fun with Aurelia, the Warleader but you should know that those games end pretty quickly for good or ill; Boros doesn't have a lot of sustain and it's hard to come from behind in those colors.

Does Kaalia of the Vast count as fun (especially just for YOU). Honestly though, i am finding that Ghave, Guru of Spores to be a really fun general. That being said, you can turn it into a brutal combo deck by adding Ashnod's Altar , Phyrexian Altar and other nasties.

@miracleHat I've honestly been looking at making a tribal fungus Ghave, Guru of Spores deck just for fun, it seems like it wouldn't be very competitive, but saproilings everywhere! Although I could easily turn it into a combo general, that's just less fun to me, and the gameplay becomes more linear, as it's just "get the combo off."

Thromok the Insatiable is super fun. King Macar, the Gold-Cursed has been fun for me lately as well. There are a lot of fun ones out there.

What do you think of Riku of Two Reflections as a fun commander? Always fun to make copies of each and everything you cast, from instants and sorceries to creatures. Combo them with Biovisionary and a few other clone-type cards, or Rite of Replication and Infinite Reflection and for not too much you can make a decent deck outta it.

I've been having a lot of fun with dragon tribal with Zirilan of the Claw . Nobody expects it. Strong yet fun to play. Trying out Karrthus, Tyrant of Jund . I've heard he's good fun as well.

I'm having fun with my Marchesa, the Black Rose deck. Granted, she will draw attention, but there are a lot of under used cards that synergize extremely well with her and the dethrone mechanic. Cards that have activated abilites with paying life as a cost are very useful with her, as are manlands (Mutavault and Lavaclaw Reaches are in my build), and possibly my favorite tech with her: Soul Conduit . Make your life lower than the highest before combat, attack and get counters from dethrone, switch life total before damage is dealt.

When picking a general, always go to the gatherer, you can find so many overlooked cards that can be a lot of fun.

Karrthus, Tyrant of Jund is a blast. For some reason, people don't mind dying to Dragons. He has an awesome ability and can be built around with very strong color support. Squee, Goblin Nabob + Survival of the Fittest , Hellkite Charger + Bear Umbra , are classic examples. I use him primarily as a color enabler to ramp and tutor out Eldrazi and threats. Fun for me, not for everyone else...lol.

You can definitley make him less Spike with a Dragon tribal theme though.

I love a good Animar, Soul of Elements deck. I have one that wins consistently, but it is really hated.

I like Varolz, the Scar-Striped . You play stuff like Death's Shadow and Phyrexian Dreadnought on turn 1 and scavenge them to deal 21 commander damage really quickly. He is very underestimated, so people won't go for you right away.

Sen Triplets is probably one of my favorites too. One @ my LGS wins occasionally. It starts off slow so no one attacks it at first, but it finishes strong.

My friend plays a Rhys the Redeemed token deck that wins often.

I used to play Riku of Two Reflections and then switched to animar. Riku won me quite a few games too.

The mimeoplasm decks run different every time you play them. Its about as nonlinear as it gets because it depends on what your opponents are playing.
