God themed EDH deck

Commander (EDH) forum

I'm thinking about making a 5 color Gods themed deck, but not sure what cards fit the theme/would be good for the deck. I've decided on Karona, False God as my commander because it gives access to all colors, and I know I want to include the 15 Theros block gods. Any suggestions as far as what else to add?

Go with Child of Alara instead, indestructable theme, and a lot of wraths lol

I disagree with the Child suggestion (unless you get a Jesus alter).

You might look around at what some other people have done, but at the least run a Fist of Suns and lots of wrath/sweeper effects. And a few planeswalkers like Garruk Wildspeaker, Jace Beleren, Sarkhan Unbroken and Elspeth, Sun's Champion would be suggested.

I suggest some creatures, since you want to be able to use both Ephara, God of the Polis's ability and Karametra, God of Harvests's ability. Also Shocklands. All ten if you can manage.

@ greyninja Main reason I'm not running Child of Alara is because it doesn't really fit the theme. Karona, False God was the closest I could get, and that's just because it has God in the name. I was planning on doing a lot of wraths, maybe a few cards like Terminus that bury them if I can find space in the deck for something like Genesis Wave that I can combo with some kinda graveyard recycling (Elixir of Immortality or something like it)

@ Karns_Pyromancer Fist of Suns is a great suggestion, I hadn't even considered it honestly. I do want to ask why you suggested Sarkhan Unbroken though. I get the card draw and free mana from his +1 is pretty sweet but outside of that I don't really understand. The other planeswalkers are probably going to be included if I can't find something better.

@ dbpunk Anything specific? I'm not sure if some kinda of token generator would be a good idea or if some low cost creatures would be better. I'm still fairly new to the format, so I'm not sure what all are good cards to consider...

Actually the lieges may help. They're all able to not only power up your gods, but they also have the ability to make your Gods creatures by providing 3 devotion to at least two colors.

Well, the best idea would be creatures that all have double symbols or hybrid mana to cast. You want your gods to be creatures, so that may help the most. My suggestions would mostly be creatures that allow you to remove anything that may be a problem, like things that counter spells or kill creatures that could hurt you before your gods get out. Or creatures with death abilities for when you field wipe.

But some good suggestions, as a start include Oracle of Mul Daya and Courser of Kruphix for mana fixing, Avatar of Woe for targeted removal, Consecrated Sphinx for card draw. That's all I can think of off the top of my head.

With Karona, False God I would definitely run stuff like Vow of Flight, Vow of Malice, etc (there's a full cycle of them), also Shield of the Oversoul, Darksteel Plate, etc

(People are going to try to attack on their turn w Karona, then wrath so nobody else can attack w her)

With the gods, people mentioned cards like the Liege's: Deathbringer Liege, Murkfiend Liege, Creakwood Liege, etc. I'd also suggest looking at a few of the following to activate the gods as well: Vexing Shusher, Deus of Calamity, Ghastlord of Fugue, Oversoul of Dusk, Dominus of Fealty, Divinity of Pride, etc

Each of the previously mentioned cmc creatures can individually activate 9 gods.

Example: Deity of Scars alone will make Athreos, God of Passage, Erebos, God of the Dead, Karametra, God of Harvests, Kruphix, God of Horizons, Mogis, God of Slaughter, Nylea, God of the Hunt, Pharika, God of Affliction, Phenax, God of Deception, Xenagos, God of Revels all become creatures!

Be sure to run all ten shocklands, for sure. Nature's Lore, Ranger's Path, Skyshroud Claim, Farseek, Kor Cartographer, Eternal Dragon, and Karametra, God of Harvests can all search for them.

Run ~40 land, plus Chromatic Lantern, Cultivate, Kodama's Reach, and maybe even Boundless Realms. I'd def lean green-heavy mana sources to help ramp

With five-colors; I would imagine it won't be the fastest deck, so be sure to troll people with Ghostly Prison, Propaganda, and Sphere of Safety.

Well that was a very very long comment to type with a phone lol. Please check out my decks and tell me what you think!

I made a Gods deck a while back and I love it. It is kind of a Gods and Superfriends theme. Mainly focuses on token generation and getting the devotion of the Gods up so they become active and can swing with no fear. It's clunky and goofy as hell, but I love playing it. I use Progen as my commander for it.

I was looking into this recently and heading it with Karona as well. I was thinking about doing an enchantment theme and then running tons of wraths (not enchantments). Then decided that wasn't powerful enough. So I switched out the less useful enchantments for planeswalkers which would allow a few more one-sided wraths. However, in playtesting it still wasn't functioning well enough.

I really love greyninja suggestion on cards like Deity of Scars with the high devotion count. It just sounds like a lot of fun! I may consider trying that route soon.

Good luck and let me know what you come up with. Off to finish my Multani shenagins deck, haha

I've been working a deck like this since all of the gods were legal to play. I too started with Karona, False God as my commander.

This is my current build if you would like to look it over for ideas.

Things I strongly suggest if building this are of course the Lorwyn demigods excluding Godhead of Awe for obvious reasons. Not only do they fit the flavor being demigods, but one of them also provides enough devotion to activate 9 of the Theros gods.

Next, bring in Avacyn, Angel of Hope. Not only is she worshiped as a god on Innistrad, but she provides protection for all of the demigods. You might also consider Avacyn's powerpuff girls, but they're not really needed in this.

For lands, it's almost a given that you have to run the temples for flavor. Plus, the scry will help you fix your hand early game. To increase the speed you just have to throw in Amulet of Vigor. You might also consider running the shocklands so that Karametra, God of Harvests can use her ability.

The one card that has won me more games than any other is Replenish. With this in hand it's perfectly safe to throw your gods and any other enchantments into the graveyard until you're ready.

Speaking of enchantments, consider running the enchantress cards for lots of card draw. It's surprising how many turns you have absolutely nothing to do without these girls in your deck.
