EDH Tournament

Hey, I had an idea.

What if we made a tournament on Untap.in and people on Tappedout were invited?

Basically, I think it would work like this (or voice your opinions if you think otherwise):

There would be a bracket, each game would have 4 people, winner would advance to the next round. I would hope that we could conjure up 64 people.

People would sign up at least 2 days in advance, and it could be held from October 2nd to October 3rd (2020) (or the next week if necessary). Basically, if you did not show up at least 5 minutes before a time agreed upon with your opponents, you would be disqualified. (If only one person or no one shows up, you might be able to reschedule unless it's too late. Exceptions can be made).

If this goes well, we could do more in the future! (It would be free and the prize recognition.)

(If people want, we can also do interviews with people who get in the top 8 about their deck they played).

What format, because if it's EDH you'd probably need at least a week to get those games in.

Also keep in mind that people are scattered across time zones here.

I would love to participate, but only have a few hours to spare every day, with not a lot of control over when that time is. I’m also not familiar with the site Untap.in. Would I need to spend significant money/time just to build a deck.

I realize that all of this may lead to my being unable to participate. I don’t expect the tournament to change because of one person’s schedule.

So yeah, you have my enthusiastic support, but I probably can’t participate.

Sounds very cool. Not sure if I would be able to participate, as I am very busy during the day and am not always available on weekends.

(Also both my Obosh and Yawgmoth decks kind of suck. 0-o)

Would there be a limit to decks (ie power level, rarity limits, cost, etc.)?

I ask so there’s no confusion, I’m wondering if we should expect to face CEDH decks, janky brews, or somewhere in between.

That's a good question actually.

I was personally hoping that it would be somewhere in between as cEDH is not exactly something that you wake up one morning and are suddenly ready for.

If people want we can totally put a price cap on. I was thinking that as long as it's under $400 US on TCG player at time of submission could be reasonable. (A judge would have to do a review.)

If people are willing to copy their decks over to T/O, I’d be willing to do a brief check over them, if you can give me a list of links. I’m not an official judge or anything, but T/O makes it really easy to check prices, so if you can’t find anyone else, I’d be happy to. I should be able to fit THAT into my schedule, even if I can’t participate in the actual gameplay.

We’d probably need a deck submission deadline, let’s say 24 hours before the first round at the latest. Decklists could almost certainly be submitted early, and we could say that if a deck doesn’t meet criteria as of the time of submission (or of 48 hours before the game, your call), the deck’s owner would have until the deadline to revise it. Of course, if a deck still didn’t meet qualifications, either the person could be disqualified (or they could be dqed from all their games until someone presiding over the tournament was able to look over the list?)

The online judge chat would probably be a perfect place for people to ask judges rules questions. Maybe a couple would even be willing to spectate the games and provide rulings? Idk if that’s a thing that could happen with Untap.

Obviously all of this is Reznorboy’s call, I’m just throwing out suggestions.

I think that would all work (it was more or less along the lines of what I already had planned.) Also, yes, anybody can spectate on Untap, so judges could do their thing.

I’ll go on the judge chat, and ask the group if any of them would be interested. IDK if any of them will, but it can’t hurt to ask!

Just checking, should the high cost be at/below $400, or should that low cost be at/below that?

I do not believe I will be able to participate, but here's my advice:

Don't put such a low price cap. I have a battlecruiser deck (around a 68 on the power scale) that I've put around 400 dollars into, I can't imagine everyone will be able to participate with their semi-competitive decks with that restriction. Unless that's around the power scale you're looking for anyways, Reznorboy.

Massacar made an excellent point about time zones: make sure someone in London wouldn't have to be stacking triggers at 1 AM

Sounds like an excellent idea overall, y'all, have a lot of fun!

Some... Cabal Coffers? Is the rest of your deck Storm Crow? Coffers is such an expensive card!

Definitely would not play if there is a budget restriction or anything other than a pure cEDH focus. No point to having a casual tournament, those two terms are contradictory. If it’s a competitive setting it should be exclusively for competitive players playing competitive decks.

That being said, there’s no reason a 400 dollar deck wouldn’t be able to be competitive in such a setting provided the pilot is highly skilled.

All the same, any kind of budget restriction would make such a tournament a less than worthwhile time investment for me.

I mean penny dreadful is fun jaymc1130 but competitive af xD

But I agree!

I will say, when I brought up cost, I was merely trying to ask about what Reznorboy has envisioned. That might have been misunderstood. Just want to make that clear. I would fully support the idea of not having any limits on the decks just as much as I would support it in any other situation.

I just thought it would be cool to have the tournament be a little bit different from the standard cEDH as well as to have it be more beginner-friendly. (Sounds bad now that I think about it but the majority of EDH players simply are pretty casual I thought it would be kind of cool to more gradually introduce people.)

We totally could just have a regular cEDH tournament if people want, but I'm afraid that a lot of people won't want that.

There's also other options, like "Your Commander can't be one of the Top Commanders on EDHREC from the past month".

Your event, your call. I’m in to help no matter what.

September 27, 2020 6:44 p.m.

I don’t think it’s fair to say you can’t have a tournament with only highly-tuned decks... if that’s your playstyle that’s fine but im pretty sure this boat can float

September 27, 2020 11:09 p.m.

I Think I said that wrong. Hopefully y’all understand

Think I had one too many double negatives
