EDH Power Nine

Here's my picks for the "Power Nine" of EDH:

- Mana Crypt - Force of Will - Sol Ring - Mox Diamond - Cyclonic Rift - Timetwister - Demonic Tutor - Imperial Seal - Vampiric Tutor

What cards did I miss??

Boza says... #2

These combine nicely into three sets of three:

  • Three black tutors
  • Three colorless mana rocks
  • Three blue "whatever the opponent is doing is bad and I will put an end to it" cards

Seems about right, though Rift is too expensive.

I think Mana Drain is a worthy inclusion. I'd cut Force of Will as it can't go in every deck due to it's requirement of exiling a blue card. Drain on the other hand has wider appeal as it is also ramp.

Drain is cost restrictive being double blue. Free counter magic is better but both are strong.

RNR_Gaming, I do agree that is restrictive - but not as restrictive as 1 blue card in hand. Force of Will limits itself to decks that run mostly blue cards. Maybe i'm wrong? But I think it's easier to just fix a manabase as opposed to drawing into a specific color - decks that are shard or wedge may have a harder time including Will .

All cedh decks that can run force, run force. Even 4c and 5c being able to tap out and still interact is just too good to pass on even if theres a chance of blanking.

RNR_Gaming, I'm not trying to be contrary, but I am just not convinced that every cEDH deck that runs blue runs Will . I think the card is a staple up to a certain point - only in one to two color decks. In three colors it's inclusion is a bit iffy...and in four? It's more likely you won't have the required blue card to pay the cost. The card is not as ubiquitous as you think it is.

LVL_666 here is a list of what the community thinks are the best iterations of cedh lists. You'll notice Force of Will appears in "all" the 4 color decks. Both cards are absurdly strong but I feel as though Force of Will is the better piece of interaction due to its ability to surprise opponents when you're tapped out.

RNR_Gaming, I'll argue that Will 's cost is more restrictive - but it can be played literally at any time. This is something more relevant in formats outside of cEDH, specifically modern and legacy. You aren't going to have any turn 0 wins in cEDH. If there are, they are extremely minuscule. Drain while requires a fixed mana base, and cannot be played at any time grants something that is outside blue: the ability to ramp. This can set your next turn to be the last turn of the game - depending on the spell countered.

While yes, both spells do very different but very powerful things - in terms of relevance to cEDH Will doesn't have as heavy of an impact as it does in other formats. Drain on the other hand enables you to potentially win the next turn with the extra resources it grants.

Also, side note - my browser warned me that your previously posted link is virus ridden or something - so i'm not going to visit it. Additionally, you didn't even post the whole link, let alone link it using:

Just saying. It would've been at least courteous.

RNR_Gaming, Correction - I'll agree Will 's cost is LESS restrictive - can be played at any time. BUT this functionality is less relevant in cEDH as it is in other formats.

Eh force saved the table many times at commandfest in the cedh tournment and in the competitive pods I was in. I'll need to learn the formatting for websites. What I linked you was the lab maniacs discord; they use to have the lists on tapped out but now all the lists that aren't max power are on their discord. Anyways here's the tappedout page if you wanted to look into it if you don't trust the link cedh teir list in Google takes you right to it. We'll just have to disagree on our power 9 :)

RNR_Gaming,

We'll just have to disagree on our power 9 :) - Agreed friend. I enjoyed our spirited debate. Thanks for engaging with me - i'll admit you've definitely changed my perspective of Will . I used to think of it as just "a really good counterspell for monoblue, simic or izzet", but it is more than that. And You were at commandfest? which one? I went to Commandfest DC.

I was at dc as well. I only played a few casual events. Overall it was a great event.

RNR_Gaming are you in the Maryland/DC Metro Area? We could meet up at a shop and play a few matches.

I am. I mostly play at high tide games. Every other shop that's not 2 hours away has closed down :(

Dude - I went to St. Mary's College of MD, and we never had the luxury of a shop nearby. You've got it good my friend. We all had to form our own club on campus and well...that was it.

We had a group from there come up and play in draft a few years back. It was great they made up half the pod. One of them is a judge now and some how managed to piss off mtg lion enough to make 6 videos about him XD they have since been flagged and taken down but that must've been a minute ago if you weren't part of that group.

RNR_Gaming so, i'm going to show my age here a bit - I graduated back in 2009 so yeah definitely before MTGLion, and honestly never heard of him. But yeah, I was playing magic before Commander was a thing - back in my day we had to deal with nonsense like Affinity and Modular. Kids these days have no idea how easy they got it LOL.
