Commander (EDH) forum

I was listening to The Command Zone's latest podcast, and one of the questions stuck with me, and I wanted to ask the community what they thought.

If you could play a game of commander with any three historical figures, who would they be, why would you choose them, and what commander would they probably play? (Ignore any language barriers and assume that they are brought to the present during the prime of their life.)

Uhhh... I'm so fucking lost. I dunno where to start. Maybe Douglas Adams. He's the first to come to my mind. Him or Terry Pratchett. Both are phenomenally witty human beings who have created works which have captivated me tremendously. I have no idea what these two gentlemen would want to play.

My second pick would be... Shakespeare? Maybe? The first legend I could think he'd enjoy is King Macar, the Gold-Cursed. Very much in the style of his tragedies.

And that's it. I dunno about the third. Heck, my first pick was two people, so let's just create a very literary-oriented group of people and hope our game creates a narrative just as memorable as the writings of the people that joined me for the evening.

I feel like Terry Pratchet would get a kick out of mono-red chaos Norin the Wary. The ineffectiveness of the commander that somehow ends up actually being not just useful but actually devastating... Seems like his kind of humor.

Douglas Adams would play Richard Garfield, Ph.D.. Obviously.

  1. Jesus, because it would be awesome to see what about him has stayed true and what is made up. Plus he seems like he would be a lot of fun to hang out with, cause you know he's not gonna put you down or make you feel like a piece of crap. He would probably play Braids, Conjurer Adept, because he definitely wouldnt want to easily get to a state where he oppresses everyone out of having fun, but still in blue so he can prevent one other person from doing that.

  2. Alexander the Great, because he is one of the most intelligent military strategists of all time. Not only did he conquer much of the world in a short period of time, he was considered a savant in many areas as well. He would probably play The Mimeoplasm, because he would definitely enjoy both the reusability and recurring nature of the deck and the fact that attacking when opponents aren't ready is a huge part of the deck.

  3. Albert Einstein was not only extremely intelligent, but he also broke the boundaries of the status quo of his time. He also knew he wasn't intelligent in all areas, so I think he would be humble with that in mind. He also seems like he would be hilarious to talk when he's not just downright insightful. He would probably play Sen Triplets control and be making a lot of decisions all the time, but making those decisions very quickly.
