Commander tips?

Hi, I am trying to find a new commander deck. I mostly run meren but would like to have a versatilie commander and/or drck where games are not the same. Elf tribals and similiar don't really appeal. Colors do not matter, my playgroup play pretty powerful edh but not competive. No infinity stuff, locks or similar.

Any tips?

I'd give Yennett, Cryptic Sovereign. Set up the top deck with big, odd CMC spells and generally have a good time.

Marchesa, the Black Rose is my favorite commander. She can be built several different ways ranging from etb/death trigger abuse, permanent creature theft, or a few other niche builds like discard or tribal wizards. Like any Grixis deck, it's inherent weakness is dealing with enchantments. I personally opt for etb/death abuse, Every Masochist Needs a Marchesa To Love Them for reference.

So if you want something that can be versatile in multiplayer games and don't want infinite combos to be your wincon, I have a couple of funsies decks that I could recommend.

Electoral Politics and Toss A Coin To Your Witcher are both flavor based decks.

If you more interested in something a bit more serious. Muldrotha, the Gravetide can be built in a lot of ways, I like doing a lands subtheme with Strip Mine so I can blow up lands and get the mine back repeatedly.

You could also try Athreos, Shroud-Veiled. You can do that aristocrats style, or body snathers.

I love Sisay, Weatherlight Captain... but it's not really different every time.

If you want something strong and fun but not busted. Animar, Soul of Elements is lots of fun

Vaevictis Asmati, the Dire is a cool commander that you can build around in a lot of different ways.

A versatile deck or one that always plays different sounds like a deck that is just a bunch of good stuff. A deck that works well with its commander but doesn’t need it. This makes me think of Kenrith, the Returned King, Yarok, the Desecrated and partner commanders. The commanders supplement the strategy, but sometimes the cards you have in hand are just more interesting than your commander at the moment.

Rankle, Master of Pranks is a commander that you can build in several ways, leveraging on every aspect Black will bring to the table in EDH. In my version I have some discard synergies, some carddraw punishes, an aristocrats subtheme, bound together by a light reanimator theme. Making the most of every Rankle damage trigger, every game plays out differently, while never losing synergy. It's one of my favourite decks to play at the moment, easy to play, fun to master. I brew in paper, so I'm afraid I have no decklist to link here, but I'll upload one if anyone would like to see it.

Thanks alot for the suggestions, Kenrith, Animar seems like good commanders but Animar is quite powerful and for me it seems the most relevant strategy with that deck is to play creatures.

Politicking seems like a good way to go, I am kind of trying to bypass the most popular commanders and get a fun deck that can win once in a while without theft/locks/infinity combos

If you want a fun, less popular commander, don't even get me started on Rayami, First of the Fallen.

Isperia the Inscrutable can be a versatile commander. You can build her as a flying tribal/toolbox deck. Tribal inside of Tribal as Azorius flyers cover many things like Angels, Birds, Spirits, Sphinx, etc. Even Voltron could be considered, as your primarily swinging with her for the ability anyway.

Narset, Enlightened Master is my recommendation. You can build a fairly powerful deck, but the randomness of what she flips off the top in combat is rather fun. Plus if you ever want to upgrade her beyond 'powerfully fun', she can easily go infinite.

Vial Smasher the Fierce is a ton of fun, partner with a green based commander and you will have a vary similar early game of ramp but from there it's just cast big spells (lots of instants and flash helps too with the Rewind ability even better) to just randomly toss damage around. the how you win/what you do is all up to you and random card draw.

I always suggest start with a Budget brew of a commander you are interested in that way if it doesn't work out you aren't out the cash. The most important thing is just look through commanders and find one that sticks out and sounds like a blast to play. I fell in love with the new Radha and put together a budget build of her here Radha, Heart of Keld ($25 Budget) just for fun and ever since ive been addicted to her. Something about spam ramping is a ton of fun to me. Go through scryfall or peoples deck lists or even youtuber deck techs and just get a feel for some commanders and see if one speaks to you.
