This sudden announcement along with the next set announcement can't be a coincidence -- I think we're going to see tribal back in a big way. This commander release could be to get players who weren't around for Lorwyn block used to the mechanics.

Either way, great! I love tribal! I can't help but think we're going to see ANOTHER elf deck (There are more than enough elves), hopefully it's G/B or G/W with a Rhys reprint of whichever colour in there.

Elves, Merfolk, Goblins, Zombies -- That's my bet, safe as it might be. Please no humans.

Having four decks that don't complete the color pie makes the OCD in me go nuts lol

I'm guessing they'll be a mix of 2c and 3c. If they are the four tribes that Skulloelegy mentioned, I'd say:

Elves: , , or ,

Merfolk: , , or

Goblins: , , or

Zombies: , , or

We don't have enough wedge legends in my opinion; so I was hoping that's what they'd print this year. Time will tell!

Wolves is of course way to much to ask for. But I'm asking anyways:

WEREWOLVES! PLEASE, WEREWOLVES!

I'm hoping for slivers.

They should do allies

April 18, 2017 2:33 p.m.

clayperce says... #7

Calling it now: Gideon tribal, for sure.

April 18, 2017 2:36 p.m.

_Delta_ says... #8

I don't think allies would be a likely option. Humans more likely if anything, although I admit I hope it's not humans/soldiers though.

"most popular, and interesting, tribes!" Is what the article says, so that rather eliminates the likelihood of some for sure.

April 18, 2017 2:36 p.m.

greyninja says... #9

After thinking about it some more; we could see zombies, elves or merfolk, and even Goblins

I'd personally love to see wurm tribal, as that was my first tribal deck I built haha. We could see birds, werewolves, elementals, fuckinnn.... minotaurs. If it is the 25th anniversary of the game they'll likely do OG tribes tho

April 18, 2017 2:40 p.m.

@clayperce: Calling it now: Gideon tribal, for sure.

Thanks for the nightmares, friend :)

As much as I would love to have a Dragon Tribal... I feel like that would be too obvious or "expected." Just like clayperce, I would love to see Werewolves.

Unlike Delta-117, I do NOT want Slivers. I also don't think WoTC would dare touch them for a constructed deck.

Elves have been done to death. I personally wouldn't care for them. Goblins would be fun, but I know they've been done to death, too.

Honestly, though, I'm open for anything. Unless this time happens to be radically different, WoTC has never disappointed me with their constructed Commander decks.

Hamster2558 says... #11

Delta-117- Allies is one of the most interesting tribes for commander. General Tazri would not be unlikely for a reprint in Commander 2017

CuteSnail says... #12

I personally think Spirits need a good commander. Don't even mention Geist, he's not the pinnacle of Spirit tribal.

April 18, 2017 2:49 p.m.

MagicalHacker says... #13

I am thinking that they will be supporting legends currently unsupported, so what would be the top tribes without a real tribal commander? Sounds like a question for edhrec.com!

Be right back...

Here are my best guesses:

Esper Zombies. (It's been a long time coming.)

RG Werewolves. It's been long enough since Ulrich of the Krallenhorde  Flip's release that WotC might have gotten the hint.

Something from Llorwyn, like Shamans or Kithkin or something. But I doubt it will be Elves, Treefolk, Goblins, or Faeries.

And...finally...

5c Eldrazi or Slivers. It's big and splashy, so it makes a logical splash to compensate for only 4 decks.

I know, it's wrecking my inner completionist that there isn't a full color wheel represented. But maybe they'll compensate by emphasizing one color over another (for example, B in a Zombie tribal) so that the colors in multiple decks are just splashed. In any case, I think things like Neheb, the Worthy signal that there will be some love coming for tribes without commanders, but I also think there will be a couple of beloved tribes represented to hit the nostalgia notes.

Ok, on a serious note ...

Here are the Top 20 most popular Tribes, per EDHREC:

  • Zombie
  • Goblin
  • Elf
  • Dragon
  • Sliver
  • Vampire
  • Wizard
  • Human
  • Ally
  • Eldrazi
  • Angel
  • Spirit
  • Elemental
  • Merfolk
  • Soldier
  • Snake
  • Cleric
  • Treefolk
  • Bird
  • Spider

I'm guessing Wizards is in for sure, since the deck offers a very different playstyle than any of the others. And I'm guessing Zombies and Eldrazi are out, since those Tribes have received so much love lately. Beyond that though, I have no idea ...

landofMordor says... #16

by the way, for my above predictions, that's not what I'm hoping for, just what I'm predicting. I'd love to see some Spirit love, some Warrior love, and some Wizard love. But who knows?

April 18, 2017 2:56 p.m.

Snake_Oil says... #17

MagicalHacker

Spirits, for sure. Cats, Hydra, Elementals (As much as I love HoN, five colours are awkward for elementals), and as much as I don't want to see it, Humans -- A human commander that supports humans.

Rebels, Beasts and Centaurs are supremely outside bets.

Job based tribal could be good -- Rogues, Shaman, Archer, Druid. Maybe a two/three colour knight commander.

What if the real joke of the set is that all 4 decks are Homarid tribal?

April 18, 2017 3:01 p.m.

_Delta_ says... #21

From that list clayperce I think the likely candidates are Spirit, dragon, Human, zombie, slivers, goblins, and elves.

I don't think we will see things like angels, eldrazi, or elementals.

April 18, 2017 3:03 p.m.

_Delta_ says... #22

I should add to that there is of course the commander anthology on the way reprinting the Heavenly Inferno deck with Kaalia of the Vast along with the others including one for elves and so we might not even see dragons or elves in addition to angels.

April 18, 2017 3:05 p.m.

_Delta_ says... #23

Or maybe I shouldn't cut out those potential options so soon, still could be dragons or elves despite this. Just was throwing mention of the commander anthology out there.

Wish I could edit comments, I really should upgrade.

clayperce says... #26

Skulloelegy,
I really like your idea of job-based tribal. If nothing else because that approach allows Wizards to sell more product (e.g., the person who actually wants a Goblins deck will just purchase the new Wizards, Warrior, and Artificer decks, pull all the Goblins and fun tribal cards out, and make the deck he or she really wants)!

Here are all the "job title" Tribes on EDHREC ...

  • Wizard
  • Soldier
  • Cleric
  • Warrior
  • Knight
  • Rebel
  • Rogue
  • Shaman
  • Samurai
  • Archer
  • Assassin
April 18, 2017 3:21 p.m.

RedUndead40 says... #27

Oh man it will never happen but a damage preventing cleric legend would be amazing.

Otherwise Im just hoping for dragons and hoping against elves.

April 18, 2017 3:30 p.m.

Snake_Oil says... #28

clayperce

Archer is really undersupported -- So much that you couldn't do much with it. They do have Greatbow Doyen which is a great lord.

Assassin isn't much better, but has more crossover with Elves.

Wizards really want to forget that Samurai are a thing...

If they did Job-Based Tribal, I think we could realistically get Wizards, Clerics (speaking as someone with a Cleric tribal deck, they're really fun), Rogues, and Soldiers. I'd love Knights or Warriors, they need multicoloured commanders.

Knights Warriors or maybe Abzan

Man, now all I want is a conspiracy style set with a guild based mechanic ala D&D -- Warrior guild, thieves guild, assassins, knights, etc.

Livingham says... #29

This may just be because I played Onslaught as a kid but I always think of the following cards when I think of tribes: Heedless One, Reckless One, Nameless One, Doubtless One, and Soulless One.

Zombies, elves, and goblins are almost definitely going to be made into decks and wizards is a fairly popular tribe so it's definitely possible. If they were following this theme then it's very likely they dropped it to 4 decks just because cleric tribal isn't incredibly popular. To be honest, I don't really want to see any of these tribes being represented in Commander 2017 seeing as there's already so much available for building around these tribes, although that's just more of a reason for Wizards to use them.

April 18, 2017 3:44 p.m.

clayperce says... #30

Skulloelegy,
Oooh, I REALLY like the idea of a D&D tie-in! It would offer amazing flavor of course, but it would also be a great way for Wizards to expose their Magic customers who don't play D&D to the game, and vice-versa!

I was also really surprised to see Artificers aren't represented as a Tribe at all in EDHREC. I'm guessing it's because even though there's a bunch of them, they're spread across all 5 colors.

But that makes me wonder if we could see five-color "job title" Commanders, kind of like General Tazri was for Allies ...

Wee_Dragonaut says... #31

April 18, 2017 4:21 p.m.

pskinn01 says... #32

Skulloelegy: Marath, Will of the Wild is an elemental that spits out elemental. So elemental tribal 3 color? But I think it needs a Lil more support to just be elementals.

April 18, 2017 4:26 p.m.

MagicalHacker says... #33

After looking on edhrec.com, it is my opinion that WotC will most likely be making commanders for tribes that already have great commanders for them, but WotC will make commanders that support the tribe with more colors. Which sucks in my opinion, because mono-colored decks need a lot of help right now.

But what I think they will be doing is Grixis Zombies, Nonred Elves, Monowhite Angels, and Gruul Werewolves. Those seem to be the most obvious holes right now.

mr_lag says... #35

Zombies and elves are the most supported tribes on my opinion, and we already have tons of cards to be used for theese decks.Something that are quite popular and not supported... Can be Angels, wizards (URG), demons and something like that.I'm expecting different mechanichs, someone deck will do aggro and others will control, reanimate or protect the board. My 2cents

April 18, 2017 5:32 p.m.

K34 says... #36

The green deck in c14 was largely elf tribal, so it's probably safe to say they won't do that one over again already.

April 18, 2017 6:37 p.m.

DemonDragonJ says... #37

It seems that the players shall need to wait even longer for allied-colored Commander decks, but this is an interesting idea, and I believe that the most likely tribes are elves, goblins, merfolk, and zombies, because they are so popular and plentiful, and that each deck shall have at least two colors, to prevent them from being too limited in their scope.

April 18, 2017 6:40 p.m.

HOPMONSTER says... #38

Odds that they include partners this time?

ex. Esper Zombie Deck with WB Partner and BU Partner, but main commander will be the 3 color?

April 18, 2017 6:59 p.m.

Phaetion says... #39

My guesses:

Zombie, Elves, Goblins, and Dragons. Boom. Done. Wizards are really only going to choose the most popular, and these are the best bets.

Though I wish for a 5-color Ally legend that doesn't tutor.

HOPMONSTER says... #40

I want a turtle commander...

April 18, 2017 7:05 p.m.

Livingham says... #41

HOPMONSTER

I doubt they will but that would be amazing. As it is, you can already make 105 different decks with the 15 current partners but adding just 10 more would increase this number to 300. If they decided to go with 15 partners again, it would instead be 435 different decks. Regardless, it would add so many new options for EDH decks.

April 18, 2017 7:09 p.m.

Phaetion says... #42

Why not a legendary Squirrel? I could see Nicol Bolas commanding an army of squirrels for his own ends (Yes. I had this happen in a game, and hilarity ensued).

EDIT: I would love it if partners were involved. Problem is that it's too soon, and they'd be hemmed into tribal synergies anyway.

MindAblaze says... #43

I would like to see an Abzan lifegain/drain commander. Seems like a gap easily filled by an elf.

Aristocrats could be filled by vampires, or zombies but that would more likely be Grixis or bug. That's your black tribe.

I don't know how they're going to do Tribal without focusing on class. When you start looking at race you run into the whole "my Ux tribe isn't represented." Picking something like Warriors and Wizards makes more sense.

April 18, 2017 7:24 p.m.

Five-color Angel to replace the not-really-legal Maelstrom Archangel? I'd love that.

April 18, 2017 8:59 p.m.

ndgipper says... #45

if they are going for two colors, we will most likely see blue-something merfolk.

April 18, 2017 9:04 p.m.

Phaetion

I highly doubt this happened considering all squirell related cards are green.

April 18, 2017 10:03 p.m.

Phaetion says... #47

Livingham: I know. It was a joke. :p

I hope Wizards aren't foolish enough to choose slivers. Then we're going to have entire pods filled with sliver decks. Oh the nightmare!

April 18, 2017 10:10 p.m.

_Delta_ says... #48

But I love slivers :(

I may only have started at Journey into Nyx, but after first coming across Galerider Sliver, Sidewinder Sliver and Sinew Sliver from a friend I started to really take an interest in them and I traded for all of his inexpensive slivers. I then started to gather more of them to start putting towards a Sliver Overlord deck once I later discovered the format of commander. I still have the deck but it's not quite done as I need Legion and Queen/some lands.

I myself would at least be happy to see them return and I'm sure there's others. There more interesting in my opinion then them going and printing more elves when guided by nature is being reprinted in the commander anthology already later this year.
