Best way to cast Ulamog, the Infinite Gyre

Commander (EDH) forum

Hi there,

I'm working on building an EDH with Anje Falkenrath as commander (not combo but focusing more on reanimation). I'm looking for better ways (if any) to cast Ulamog, the Infinite Gyre (from my hand or directly from the deck), as this is a card I would love to play more but very slow and hard to cast. Suggestions would be much appreciated. Thanks!

Ps: I posted originally in MTG Q&A Rules but it looks like my question was removed. Hope this is the right place.

If you’re doing for Anje Dance of the Dead or Animate Dead would be good. Pitch him to Anje, bring him back cheap with one of these.

Swim_ish ulamog doesn't go to the graveyard. he gets shuffled in the library

My suggestion would be to plan on not ever actually playing him. There are instant speed ways to reanimate him with the shuffle trigger on the stack, but they generally arent very good because they are either a bit narrow in use or force you to sac the reanimated creature at end step. You could use Rakdos, Lord of Riots or a bunch of mana rocks to cast ulamog, but that will dilute your strategy to a point where I wouldn't consider it worth it.

Thanks very much GhostChieftain

Could you please elaborate more on the "here are instant speed ways to reanimate him with the shuffle trigger on the stack, but they generally arent very good because they are either a bit narrow in use or force you to sac the reanimated creature at end step." - with some examples perhaps?

I guess to stay true to your Plan with Anje as your Commander big rituals might help you get there. Bubbling Muck, Mana Geyser, Irencrag Feat, Geosurge, Songs of the Damned with a big ol' gy, Sacrifice, Burnt Offering, Culling the Weak,...those can give you big bursts of mana. However this seriously narrows down your gameplay with Anje to just getting out an eldrazi. If you do choose to focus on casting the Slithergang, I would recommend the previously mentioned Rakdos, Lord of Riots in that colorcombi.

Um if you are doing reanimater with anji you are probably also running Chainer, Nightmare Adept, that might be a better choice cmdr. But theres ways to cheat it in but not with that cast trigger. Like Quicksilver Amulet, and Thran Temporal Gateway. The only way I see you being able to cast him (cheat cast) in these colors are Sunbird's Invocation, and that not easy either.

Imagine getting your Ulamog, the Infinite Gyre into your graveyard, as you would like, to reanimate him. The bottom clause of the card makes you immediatly put a trigger onto the stack to shuffle the big boy back into your library. They designed this by choice to not make them easily reanimatable. Back to the stack: trigger to shuffle him back into the library on the stack, you only now would have the chance to reanimate him with something like Shallow Grave, as otherwise the next time you could cast the common reanimation spells as Reanimate or Animate Dead, you would not have Ulamog, the Infinite Gyre in your graveyard anymore. Conclusion: there are serious hoops to jump through to make you be able to reanimate the biggest eldrazi. p.s.: sorry for grammar

Goryo's Vengeance Corpse Dance Makeshift Mannequin Shallow Grave Necromancy can all do it. Out of these, the only one I would actually suggest playing is Necromancy but not at all because it could reanimate ulamog

Coffin Queen is a decent go-to card for instant speed reanimation, plus Ulamog stays around.

Hell's Caretaker is also an option.

Yea, I really like this. Theres enough spells to do this for super cheap. Imagine pulling this off on turn 3. Discard Ulamog, the Infinite Gyre, shuffle trigger on the stack. Cast Shallow Grave, it resolves. Go to combat, swing, trigger annihilator 4. Lol the defending player might have exactly 4 permanents. That can shut a player out of the game very early. Pretty strong.

Vampiric Tutor + Reality Scramble

I've gotten lucky enough to get this combo with a sol ring and a signet and dropped a Blightsteel Colossus on turn 2

almost forgot

Shifting Shadow works just as good and sticks because Ulamog, the Infinite Gyre is indestructible

not as good but Purphoros, Bronze-Blooded, Ilharg, the Raze-Boar, Sneak Attack other good ways to temp out fatty's
