I'm wanting to make an Izzet colored Commander deck , but am struggling with finding the right commander to use. I'm also looking for staples to run the deck competitively

Nin, the Pain Artist looks like she'd be a lot of fun.

Niv-Mizzet, the Firemind is great if you're going to go competitive.
If you want to play for fun (a.k.a. NOT running tutors and enchanting Niv-Mizzet with Curiosity ), try running the following:

Niv-Mizzet, Dracogenius can slightly less annoying than his firemind counterpart. same general idea, draw to win.
all the others i can think of have been mentioned. Good luck, and have fun!

Keranos, God of Storms is especially annoying with things like Eyes of the Watcher or Sensei's Divining Top .

Jhoira of the Ghitu can be good, but is probably reserved for a more competitive format because getting her ability resolved more than once can be a bit friend-losing. The two Niv-Mizzets are good, but unlike Jhoira can be played in casual and competitive play groups. My all-around pick? Melek, Izzet Paragon

OP did mention wanting to run the deck competitively.

well, in that case, Niv-Mizzet, the Firemind or Jhoira of the Ghitu would be the best bets.

I decided to run Jhoira of the Ghitu . She seems like an awesome commander. I can bring out threats using her ability.
Now my only question is, where do I go from here? I want to run both Niv-Mizzet, Dracogenius and Niv-Mizzet, the Firemind and a couple of Jace's and counters and boardwipes. What are my best options?

If you want to play this competitively, you really shouldn't be running those cards. They don't do enough for you.
Do you actually want a competitive deck, or do you just want a tuned-up deck? It's fine if you don't plan on winning tournaments with it, but your end goal has to inform the design process.

I don't plan on taking it to big tournaments, but playing at the Local shop with a bunch of people and playing with friends as well.
So probably somewhere in between to answer your question Epochalyptik. I want to be able to compete with everyone and win and have fun

If your in the mood to lose friends, you could run Kozilek, Butcher of Truth and Ulamog, the Infinite Gyre main deck. He combos well with jhoira. Too well.

Jhoira of the Ghitu and Niv-Mizzet, the Firemind are the two top-tier Izzet generals.
