Anyone with good voltron Commanders?

Commander (EDH) forum

Posted on Oct. 30, 2014, 8:18 p.m. by TheGamer

I thought it was finally time to take a more aggressive approach to commander, instead of just the same old Combo Control I always do. So, after doing a lot of thinking, I ended up building voltron. And then I realized I needed a commander! :P

So, now I need a deck. I'd like to not use Blue if possible because all my blue power cards are in my Damia, Sage of Stone control deck. But any commanders would be helpful.

So please, comment! Tell me what you think my commander should be, why, and if you have a deck with that commander, please feel free to post it! Thanks guys and happy deckbuilding!

Damia, Sage of Stone voltron. Duh..

I do not have a deck with this commander but have played against one with my Zur deck and it was a toughie, but I'd recommend Uril, the Miststalker , he is pretty nice and meets your no blue requirement whilst playing nicely with enchantments. (Assuming I understand what you mean by voltron...) For enchantments he is just fantastic, I have on my horizon, plans of using him as a commander, but have a checklist of decks I want to build first.

Kemba, Kha Regent seems like she would be really good. Low cmc, decent toughness already, and you make tokens for each equipment attached to it.

My zurgo list is putting up decent numbers on trice. Has a bit of a weakness to hexproof but it's easily worked around.

Zurgo Helmsmasher !!! Slap something crazy on him like Worldslayer .
Run board wipes of all kinds.

You're welcome.

gnarlicide lol dude. Trust me you need much more than that. A mix of discard and kill all the things does well though as well as enchantments that poop out tokens every turn

Eight-and-a-Half-Tails , Ashling the Pilgrim , Odric, Master Tactician , Korlash, Heir to Blackblade , Isamaru, Hound of Konda , Skithiryx, the Blight Dragon , Godo, Bandit Warlord , Volrath the Fallen , Sigarda, Host of Herons , Thrun, the Last Troll

All of these are pretty sweet, but I'll make special notice to a couple.

Skithiryx, the Blight Dragon can kill exceptionally fast, easily two shots an opponent and has haste built in.

Volrath the Fallen is a different kind of voltron strategy, where you can also have reanimation and fatties as a back-up plan.

Sigarda, Host of Herons is probably one of the most resilient voltron commanders, with that or Zur the Enchanter being the most resilient. I would definitely recommend trying her out, she has some of the best colour support.

Funny you mention that... I just so happen to run spot removal for days, discard, boardwipes, tutors, and enchantments that poop out dudes.

I think we just became best friends!

Let's cross swords. Lol.

The real question that needs to be asked, TheGamer, is what kind of voltron do you want to build? There are two schools of thought, artifacts or enchantments.

I tend to favor artifacts but that's mainly because I play in a meta rampant in board wipes so that's something to consider.

Ohthenoises: I'd like to try artifacts because i already have a lot of good cards in those colors (Stoneforge Mystic , Batterskull , Fabricate , etc) so theres not a lot i would have to buy. Also, ive just always love artifacts.

Do u know if voltron is expensive? Also, do voltron decks normally run creatures or is it basically commander and equipments?

Good voltron can be a bit expensive since most of the swords of x and y are kinda needed since protection is a huge form of evasion and protection. Batterskull and some of the more expensive equipments aren't really REQUIRED but it makes the deck a bit better overall.

Most decks run creatures in a utility capacity, mine are tailored to my meta (wrath heavy, like 6-10 per player) so they are designed to live or be hard to kill.

My deck is I Vant, my burd..., I chose Derevi, again, due to a wrath heavy meta. If you get hit by too many wraths, counters, or kills the deck kind of falls apart because your commander is too expensive to cast. Other popular choices are Rafiq of the Many , Sigarda, Host of Herons , Eight-and-a-Half-Tails , or Linvala, Keeper of Silence . I like Bant personally but it's up to you.

Because your general is your primary win condition, you want a general that protects itself...

Sigarda, Host of Herons , Korlash, Heir to Blackblade , Skithiryx, the Blight Dragon (be carefull with this one, you will be targeted), Uril, the Miststalker , Thrun, the Last Troll , and Eight-and-a-Half-Tails all fit the bill. The latter is really good because it protects all of your permanents. You could also argue for blue generals like Bruna, Light of Alabaster because they have counterspells.

Hope this was helpfull... long live Sigarda!

I have a zurgo double strike/sunforger deck thats pretty brutal, and uril deck that can beat 3 decks on its own 3v1. Urils harsh, altho the new land that removes hexproof might tone him down slightly

I used to run Sigarda, Host of Herons I would really recommend her as she is open to auras and equipments and she is extremely hard to remove while being reasonably costed.

I really like Drana, Kalastria Bloodchief as a voltron general. You have a lot of creature removal, but more than that you're a mono-black deck so you should be fast.

October 31, 2014 2:51 a.m.

Sigarda, Host of Herons is really pretty good especially once you make her indestructible.

Rafiq of the Many is another one that can get out of hand really quickly and all of a sudden BAM 21 commander damage.

Most of the other good generals have been listed already. Eight-and-a-Half-Tails , Skithiryx, the Blight Dragon , etc etc. Happy deckbuilding!

Thank you everyone for the comments! After thinking very hard about it I actually ended up choosing Jor Kadeen, the Prevailer . Since I wanted to go with a more artifact plan, I thought he should be very good for this deck. An 8/4 first strike im very happy with by itself, and then think about all the equipments put on it!

If your're going boros I would actually use Aurelia, the Warleader , because she's just stupid good with any equipments on her, and lets you win even if you don't have a million things pumping her.

lemmingllama says... #23

Aurelia, the Warleader costs a little bit more though. Its normally good as one of the 99 though. Same with Gisela, Blade of Goldnight

6 mana vs. 5 mana, with a little bit of color issue present. Also, she has haste, so she'd still be attacking the same turn Jor Kadeen would. That's my personal preference, but you can do whatever you want... good luck!
