5 Color Foil Landbase on a Budget

Commander (EDH) forum

Not 100% sure if this goes here or the commander deck help section but I put it here because Im not posting a deck list.

So one of the first decks I ever made was a sliver deck, and when I got into EDH I was a bit daunted at the 100 card singleton format, so in order to garuntee synergy throughout the 100 cards I logically chose slivers as my first EDH deck also. Having been a sliver aficionado for a long time already I had most of the slivers already in foil, and the cards I did not have foiled I have been collecting over the years.

Now slivers are not the most competitive of EDH decks, despite what many people believe, and I have a hard time justifying dropping big monies on foil shock lands for a pretty casual deck. Thus I am looking for fairly budget foil lands. By fairly budget I mean 10$ or less, and hopefully closer to $5.

At the moment I am running the tri-land cycle Seaside Citadel and friends(10), the vivid cycle Vivid Creek and friends (5), a few non- foil ETB untapped all color land land Command Tower and similar (5), and the rest is made up of basics (7) and a random smattering of foil miscellaneous lands like Rootbound Crag.

Ive recently been thinking of replacing some lands with the rav karoos Boros Garrison and friends, but with the number of ETB tapped lands already in there Im thinking it might just stall out my plays too much early game. I do like their ramping effect a lot though.

Any ideas on a stable five color, budget land selection for this guy? Also, as a side question, anyone have any ideas on very 'slivery' looking basic lands(each color) to use as my basics for the deck?

Thanks in advance!

How about some of the storage lands, like Calciform Pools? They are cheap in foil and let you ramp hard if you don't want to immediately use the mana.

Also most of the temples, like Temple of Deceit, are under $5 in foil.

Finally, check out Ancient Ziggurat. Cheap and great.

No. Don't run the Karoos. If they're anyone running things like strip mine, wasteland, ghost quarter, or tech edge, you're done for. The pain lands are cheap in foil. So are checks.

I mean, even if its not the most competitive deck and you don't wanna drop big money on it, Shocks/Fetches are staples in all formats so they're not going to crash anytime soon.

That's true. Also, am I the only one who hates foiled decks? They seem so tacky, the cards have a tendency to bend easier, and the foiling makes the cards more annoying to look at after a while.

@TheDevicer No, I'm anti-foil like a mother. I look at them strictly as trade fodder, generally for the non-foil and another card.

foil

wants budget

Wat.

In all seriousness, the checks (Dragonskull Summit and buddies) and pain lands (Llanowar Wastes, etc) are pretty cheap in foil. So are the temples.

lemmingllama Storage lands seem alright, Ive just never had a lot of luck with them and they suffer from the same drawback as the rav karoos much of the time. That is, if they are removed with counters on them you take a decent tempo hit. The scry lands are decent, and would have some good synergy with the rav karoos if I used both, but that would mean a Id probably need to drop the tri-lands and Im not sure if the reliability would be high enough with 20 dual color lands and 5 all colors(plus 10 basics). I also def already have Ancient Ziggy, thanks :)

TheDevicer There is not a ton of land hate going obn in my area, there is the occasional card but no decks are running Crucible of Worlds and Wasteland or anything like that. I get what you are saying though, you do take a big hit if one of them(rav karoos) does get nuked. Not sure if the added synergy of switching out the tri-lands for scry lands will make up for the potential drawback, and/or if the color reliability will be good enough just running mostly dual color lands, what do you think?

Also, Im pretty sure you are in the smaller group of people who dont like foils. They do bend, that sucks, and mostly they are just an ego trip "Look how balling I am!", but a guy can want to pimp out his pet deck, right?

Magicrafter Yeah, they are staples of many formats and I have a playset of each, but at 500$ for 10 shock lands, and another 500$ for fetch lands when I already have non-foil versions seems a bit extreme just to make my pet deck pretty.

This is bullshit Foil and budget can happen. Unfortuantely the check lands will just be guildgates most of the time since there are so few basics being run in a 5 color deck. This would be different obviously if I was running shock/fetches, but as I said, thats a bit out of the price line. The pain lands seem fairly legit at about 8-14$ a pop, just not sure what cycle to remove for them, what do you think?

So at this point I have a few options to work with.

Build One

10x Rav Karo Cycle - Selesnya Sanctuary

10x Scry Lands - Temple of Deceit ect

10x Pain Lands - Shivan Reef ect

5x All Color Lands - City of Brass ect

0 Basic Lands

Build Two

10x Tri Lands - Seaside Citadel ect

10x Pain Lands - Underground River ect

5x Vivid Cycle - Vivid Crag ect

5x All Color Lands - Mana Confluence ect

5x Basic Lands

The Pros of Build One is that it comes with built in ramp, re-usable topdeck manipulation, and fairly decent color coverage. The Cons are that just over half of the lands ETB tapped and/or bouncing makes it on the slow side, and it could suffer to excessive land removal. As for Build Two, its got better color coverage and its a bit faster than Build One.

Thoughts?

for the basics, you could go flavor wise and buy some from the PDS Slivers edition.

00xtremeninja Yeah I have the PDS, I just am not really a fan of the art on them though. I mean there are a bunch of slivery looking lands out there, IDK why they didnt use them in it, sillyness really. Thanks for the idea though!

I hear ya, well........hmmmmmm.........

go through the sets that Slivers made an appearance and look for foil basics from those sets? I personally love the Tempest, Stronghold, and Mirage lands, but I know those aren't foil.

screw it, go 5th edition for the lulz.
