Which Simic Commander for a Top-Deck Matters Deck?

Commander Deck Help forum

Hey all.

Momir Vig: The OG Primespeaker

This is the deck I've been working on for awhile now. I've been playing it to great success and love the theme of having the top deck matters in simic. Cards like Coiling Oracle and Future Sight are some of my favorite in magic, so I figured building a deck around them was what I was going for here.

Anyways, I do love the deck and it performs great at my LGS, but I mostly play at my house with my brothers. I feel like Momir Vig, Simic Visionary might be a bit too cutthroat. I want to make a strong deck, but Momir might be a bit too consistent for the times I play more casually.

ENTER Rashmi, Eternities Crafter .

Now she seems to be very similar in playing with the top of the deck, and seems less consistent in the sense that she does allow me to see lots of the deck, but she doesn't tutor me up an immediate answer in response. She also just gives a lot of value.

The problem is, I don't know how strong she is. Is she more competitive than Momir in some cases? Looking at the commander tier list here on tapped out it seems she's the same tier, but being more casual the cEDH I don't know if she's as strong in my more casual/75% meta.

TLDR: I'm trying to decide if the consistency of Momir Vig is too harsh for my more casual brothers, and if Rashmi is too casual for my 75% friends. Any ideas?

why not both? Many decks use a general and secondary one

@TheBoraxKid

Is he good enough alone? I dislike Kydele, and I kinda wanna keep it simic.

@Snap157:

You see, I've tried that, except there's the problem of the deck being split a bit. Even if Rashmi and Momir are similar, they have differing styles that means I might get a deck thats decent, just not good at either of the tactics that I want to the deck to go into.

I don't think Rashemi will be too underwhelming for you.

Hey, Prime Speaker Vannifar is in my opinion a prime example of a great causal Commander that can include competitive interactions since she can tutor directly and put game winning creatures onto the battlefield such as Thrasios and Protean Hulk . Vannifar is good with ramp and that's something you want when playing green.

IMO, here is no better commander than Rashmi to have shenanigans with the top card while being exclusively Simic. Check out my deck if you're looking for ideas or proofs ;)

Rashmi, Eternities Crafter is super fun and could be considered "fair" since she's not really tutoring up combos. I've been playing her since she was released with kaladesh

You can assist her, too, with Sensei's Divining Top , Scroll Rack , Sylvan Library , Mirri's Guile , etc to make her more consistent.

I just love that when she's out, every Counterspell is pretty much a draw spell too Haha

I went with infinite turns combos in my version. It's a little out of date on here otherwise I'd link it.

Above all have fun! Cheers!

Noted. Do you happen to play her?

I would, but I just built my brother a Vannifar deck to get him back into magic. She does look fun though!

Duly noted! Is it okay if I can't afford cards like Vedalken Orrery to start, and currently don't have many flash creatures in my collection. Also, I see a lot of control builds, is a creature heavy build still viable? I'm thinking of running around 25-30 creatures (30 currently being in my list).

Some of those cards seem a bit expensive, sorry I didn't mention budget being a problem in my post. Is there a good creature based version? I prefer creatures to spells, which I feel is more simic than lots of instants and sorceries feeling more izzet, and would love to make it a creature heavy list.

Thanks everyone for your comments!

So, I have not played her, but I have seen her in action. She at least draws you 2 cards a turn which is a powerful effect.

Arcaneful Just build it the way you want, I just posted my deck to give you ides for cards. I didn't mean you to copy the strategy I have with the flash parts.

I personally like to brew my own decks to have them be different from what everyone else does. However, I think Rashmi is more consistent if you play a control shell. Mine is more for fun too, depends on what your goal is.

And no, Vedalken Orrery is not mandatory for your deck to work. It makes sense in mine, but you can easily play lots of instants instead (like bounce/counterspells) that'll do what you want : trigger Rashmi ;)

There are oodles of green and blue creatures worth running. You can give them flash too with cards like Teferi, Mage of Zhalfir and Yeva, Nature's Herald to make use of Rashmi's ability

As mentioned, I went with a extra turn theme, but I also have an Animar, Soul of Elements creature deck and a Maelstrom Wanderer elves deck. Rashmi, Eternities Crafter is an elf; so that's a tribal direction you could take :P

Peruse edhrec.com as well. It's good for getting (too many) ideas!

Anywho, here's my not-so-budget-friendly Rashmi deck if anyone wants to check 'er out. Feel free to upvote as well! I always return the favor!
